  • The clinker of which main component was calcium-chloroaluminate ($l1CaOㆍ7Al_2$$O_3$$CaCl_2$), was synthesized with the bottom ash of municipal solid waste incinerator ash. The hydration mechanism and synthesis temperature of calcium-chloro-aluminate were investigated. The synthesized clinker was blended with a cement. It was substituted with 3~13 wt.% for clinker and $CaSO_4$ of ordinary portland cement. The compressive strength and the content of leached heavy metals of its mortar were measured. Calcium-chloroaluminate was synthesized above $800^{\circ}C$ and its main hydrate was ettringite ($3CaOㆍAl_2$$O_3$$3CaSO_4$$32H_2$O). The calcium-chloroaluminate was also synthesized above $800^{\circ}C$ with the bottom ash of which size fraction was below 30 mesh mainly. The compressive strength of the blended cement mortar was increased as the additive content of the clinker synthesized from the bottom ash was increased by 11 wt.%. The concentration of heavy metals leached from each mortar was satisfied with the value of the environmental standards and regulations.

  • Although the ferrous material was separated by the magnetic separation before the incineration process, the municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash generated during incinerator in metropolitan area consists of many iron products which account for about $3{\sim}11%$ as well as ceramics and glasses. The formation of $NiFe_2O_4$ and $FeCr_2O_4$ with a $Fe_3O_4-Fe_2O_3$ (similar to pure Fe) on the surface of iron product was found during air-annealing in the incinerator at $1000^{\circ}C$, because Ni and Cr has a chemical attraction about iron is using to coat with Ni and Cr metals for poish or to prevent corrosion. Therefore, Fe-Ni Cr oxide can be formed on durface of the iron product and it can be separated from bottom ash through the magnetic separation. So, in this study, the separation ratio of heavy metals as magnetic separation and mineralogical formation of Fe-ion(heavy metal) in ferrous metals corroded were investigated. As the result, the separation ratio of Ni and Cr based on particle sizes accounted for about $45{\sim}50%$, and Cu and Pb accounted for below 20%. Also, the leaching concentration of Ni and Cr in bottom ash separated by magnetic separation was lower than that in fresh bottom ash.

  • Carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) is known to be a major greenhouse gas partially emitted from waste combustion facilities. According to the greenhouse gas emission inventory in Korea, the quantity of the gas emitted from waste sector in 2005 represents approximately 2.5 percent of all domestic greenhouse gas emission. Currently, the emission rate of greenhouse gas from the waste sector is relatively constant partly because of both the reduced waste disposal in landfills and the increased amounts of waste materials for recycling. However, the greenhouse gas emission rate in waste sectors is anticipated to continually increase, mainly due to increased incineration of solid waste. The objective of this study was to analyze the property of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and estimate $CO_2$ emissions from domestic MSW incineration facilities. The $CO_2$ emission rates obtained from the facilities were surveyed, along with other two methods, including Tier 2a based on 2006 IPCC Guideline default emission factor and Tier 3 based on facility specific value. The $CO_2$ emission rates were calculated by using $CO_2$ concentrations and gas flows measured from the stacks. Other parameters such as waste composition, dry matter content, carbon content, oxidation coefficient of waste were included for the calculation. The $CO_2$ average emission rate by the Tier 2a was 34,545 ton/y, while Tier 3 was 31,066 ton/y. Based on this study, we conclude that Tier 2a was overestimated by 11.2 percent for the $CO_2$ emission observed by Tier 3. Further study is still needed to determine accurate $CO_2$ emission rates from municipal solid waste incineration facilities and other various combustion facilities by obtaining country-specific emission factor, rather than relying on IPCC default emission factor.

  • The emission characteristics of mercury in waste incinerators were investigated to get basic data for the policy development on the emission reduction of mercury (Hg). For the study several important factors were analysed from 4 incinerators such as mercury concentration, emission factors and removal rate for control devices. The results are listed below. Mercury concentrations in the flue gas were 0.39~5.96 $\mu\textrm{g}$/S㎥ in MWI and 2.5~8.8 $\mu\textrm{g}$/S㎥ in IWI. The distributions of gaseous and particulate mercury in flue gas were above 99% and below 1 %, respectively. Therefore, in order to remove mercury effectively, it is important to control the gaseous mercury. Mercury concentrations in fly ash collected from control device were found as 16.2~35.6 mg/kg- ash in FF of MWI. Also mercury concentrations at the front and back point of control device of MWI were 33.45~62.65 $\mu\textrm{g}$/S㎥ and 0.88~3.49 $\mu\textrm{g}$/S㎥, respectively. Emission factors were estimated as 3.67~11.67 mg/ton in FF, 2.6~24.5 mg/ton in MWI with SNCR, SDR and FF, 54.9~192.7 mg/ton in IWI with Cyclone and FF. Emissions from Municipal Waste Incinerator were found both in minimum and maximum ranges. Annual mercury emissions emitted from MWI was estimated as 20.0 kg (6.0~33.9 kg).

  • In Taiwan there are 21 Municipal Solid Waste Incinerators (MSWI) built to treat 80% of the MSW nationwide. Approximately 2,000 tons of incineration ashes of municipal waste contain reaction ash and fly ash (3:1 by weight)will be produced daily, and this may cause a serious waste problem. According to EPA regulations, reaction ash and fly ash produced after incineration should be properly treated. Landfill capacity barely meets the general demands. More efficient actions should be planned and taken. The study found 'reclamation' should be the optimal solution to this problem. Only limited research and previous successful experiences are available among other countries. An incinerator in Northern Taiwan is chosen for this study to make environmental bricks from the reaction ash and fly ash. From the previous tests, the results of strength test were measured. From the previous test results, the fly ash products have not reached the desired strength; hence, reaction ash is chosen for further pilot study. In the experiment, incineration ashes, cement and gravel are mixed in the ratio of 1:1:1(by weight), to ground concretization aggregate and pelletization aggregate, the concrete products made from the aggregates were of the strength of 108 $kgf/cm^2$ and 142 $kgf/cm^2$ individually. For the purpose of making nonstructural walls which met the State Building Standards. In the study, 50 tons of concrete products was yielded from aggregate and environmental bricks. Further observation and supervision are recommended to ascertain the resource recycling and reclamation. EPA has planned to build three 'Recycling Plants' in northern, middle and southern Taiwan to develop efficient techniques to produce concrete products, sub-base course, soundproofing wall, gravel, artificial fishing reefs, tiles, drainage, bricks and etc. This experiment of the demonstrative plant solves the problem of the incineration ashes and opens another opportunity to reclaim them.

  • Iksan city is planning to construct a waste incinerator on the site of about $110,000\textrm{m}^2$ in size that will be selected from a public bid(Oct.~Nov.2002)in the wake of expiration by June 2003 of use for Hamyeol fill-up ground. Science it has usually been difficult to find sites for filling-up or incinerating facilities owing to NIMBY phenomenon, it is badly requested to employ up-to-date technology for processing wastes without environmental pollution. The conflicts between the administrative authorities and community people with regard to construction of incineration facilities, fill-up ground and facilities for waste processing or recycling are not the matters of just today but are increasingly deepening and spreading countrywide. There seems to be no prospect for these conflicts to be amicably settled through dialogues. They rather become a social disease inflicting the whole country like an epidemic. It is therefore believed to be necessary to introduce measures to design and build environment-friendly facilities that may be accepted by residents as not abominable ones but be used as amusing place while they watch the daily operation of them as watchdogs. Iksan city's plan to construct environment-friendly waste incineration facilities of pyrolysis type without chimney has undergone the process of public hearings and explanatory gatherings from every class of Iksan citizens to get consensus but is still delayed due mainly to be the failure of inducing foreign investments. Pyrolysis technology has two advantages ; first, environment-friendly due to less emission of second pollutants ; second, production of by-products highly valuable as resources. It Is known that Germany has recently begun installation and operation of pyrolysis facility urban wastes, an evidence indicating that pyrolysis method will be widely applied to cope with the tightened regulation to preserve environment worldwide.

  • The treatment of domestic municipal solid waste has inclined to incineration process instead of disposal in landfills. So, the amount of ash generated by incineration of municipal solid waste is gradually increased. The incineration ash divides into bottom ash and fly ash. The bottom ash which accounts for about 90% of the incineration ash consists of ceramics, glasses and metals. And it can be used as the recycling product by the stabilization process. For example, the bottom ash is used as secondary building material or for other similar purposes such as road sub-bases and noise barrier in USA, Europe and Japan. But, the stabilization-treatment technique of bottom ash sti11leaves much to be desired in Korea. Thus, the domestic study of recycling about bottom ash must be improved through investigation about the chemical property and technique of stabilization.

  • A large amount of combustible household waste are incinerated on a large scale. Incineration ashes including flooring and scattering materials are generated in the incineration facilities. The incineration materials (flooring and scattering) are generated 16.5% of the total amount ashes brought into the incinerator. The amount of incineration materials decrease the landfill period of existing landfills and increase the needs for the construction of new landfills. This study introduces technical and institutional suggestions to solve increasing incineration ash problem by recycling them. As a technical recycling method, incineration materials can be recycled by producing earthwork materials and concrete products. In addition, the government and local governments will be able to promote recycling by improving related laws such as the Waste Management Act and by preparing active institutional support measures such as incentives for recycling companies for Green New Deal strategies.

  • In this paper, the solidification behaviour and compressive strength of fly ash, cement, and waste stone powder were studied each separately and with addition of each in different proportions. And also, we assessed stabilizing ability of waste stone powder in cement which was added in fly ash. The particle size of waste stone powder was found smaller than the fly ash and cement particle sizes. Moreover, when mixing all(fly ash, cement, and waste stone powder) showed distinctive crystal structure, and improved stiffness. In case of mixing fly ash, cement and waste stone powder in different proportions, the compressive strength was exceeded to the predicted compressive strength of 10 kgf/cm$^2$. The XRD analysis showed high contents of CaO in fly ash and SiO$_2$ in case of waste stone powder sample. Heavy metal emission experiment showed the 3mg/L of Pb after 14 days of mixing 150 kg/m$^3$ of cement with the 80$\sim$100 kg/m$^3$ of waste stone powder, which is fulfilling the National Waste Management Policy.

  • A MILD(Moderate and Intense Low oxygen Dilution) combustion, which is effective in the reduction of NOx, is considerably affected by the recirculation flow position of hot exhaust gas to the combustion furnace. A numerical analysis was accomplished to elucidate the flow characteristics in the MILD combustion incinerator for several cases with or without exhaust gas recirculation. It could be seen from the result of the present numerical study that the flow recirculation could be observed in the upper region over the vertical dividing wall for the case without exhaust gas recirculation. The optimal position of exhaust gas recirculation position was derived by the comparison of %RMS of x directional velocity for the cases with exhaust gas recirculation. The case with the exhaust gas recirculation position at the upper right of free board was the most effective with the smallest value of 57.4% RMS.
