This work is about the development or asphalt sealant using the waste edible oil. Asphalt sealant has been used for crack filler and bridge deck joint sealer Several plasticizers such as aromatic or paraffin process oils, DOP, Bunker C fuel oil, and waste edible oil were compounded with the basic components such as asphalt(AP-5), a thermoplastic elastomer(SBS triblock copolymer), a tackifying agent(petroleum resin), and stabilizers. Penetration, softening point, ductility, and elongation by tensile adhesion of those asphalt sealant compounds were measured. Their properties were changed largely depending on both the type and content of plasticizers. Waste edible oil and DOP were the best plasticizers for the low temperature tensile adhesion characteristics. Penetration and elongation by tensile adhesion of asphalt sealant compounds increased with the increase of waste edible oil content and decreased with the increase of talc content. The manufacture of asphalt sealant with low penetration and excellent low temperature tensile adhesion was possible by the recipe optimization.
Although traditional Korean diet consists of Very little fats and oils, the increase of their consumption, especially vegetable oil, has been truly remarkable in recent years and this increase is attributed to the improvement of their dietary habit and the development of Korean food industry. On the other hand, domestic production of the edible vegetable oil did not increase at all. Naturally, foreign exchange (over a several hundred million U.S. dollars) is annually used in importing oil seed and/or oil per se. Under these circumstances, it is of utmost importance to maximize the domestic production of edible vegetable oil, although its complete self-sufficiency cannot be achieved. In this seminar, intake of fats and oils by Korean people, status and outlook of the domestic production and consumption of fats and oils will be discussed, with. emphasis on the utilization of agricultural by products and waste as a source of fats and oil.

This study investigated possibilities for a new reducing shrinkage method of soybean oil(SO) and waste oil(WO) to compare with shrinkage reducing agent(RS) and expansion additive(EA). There was no big difference to flow, air contents, and compressive strength of plain to use SO and WO. For the reducing shrinkage performance, SO and WO was more effective than RS and EA, because their fatty acid reacted with calcium hydroxide of concrete to turn soap. For the pore distribution by porosimter, $0.01{\sim}0.1{\mu}m$ pores of SO and WO were 0 ml/g, and $10{\sim}100{\mu}m$ also remarkably lower than any others. In these results, it inferred that they filled up capillary pore and mitigated autogenous shrinkage by their saponification of their fatty acid and calcium hydroxide.

Non-edible oil sources (i.e., Palm Acid Oil, waste animal fat) usually contain relatively high amount of free fatty acids (FFA) that make them inadequate for direct base catalyzed transesterification reaction. Enzymatic biodiesel synthesis can solve several problems posed by the alkaline-catalyzed transesterification, and has certain advantages over the chemical catalysis of transesterification, as it is less energy intensive, allows easy recovery of glycerol and the transesterification of glycerides with high free fatty acid contents. In this study, we synthesized biodiesel through enzymatic catalyzed process using high free fatty acid containing waste oil in biodiesel reactor (1 ton/day) and optimized the biodiesel production processes.

The Louisiana crawfish industry comprises the largest concentration of crustacean aquaculture in the United States. Processing plants throughout the culture region annually generate as much as 80 million pounds of peeling waste during recovery of the 15% (by weight) edible tail meat. A commercial oil extraction process for recovery of carotenoid astaxanthin from crawfish waste has been developed. Crawfish pigment in its various forms finds applications as a source of red intensifying agents for use in aquaculture and poultry industries. Crawfish shell, separated in the initial pigment extraction step, is an excellent source of chitin. Applicable physicochemical procedures for isolation of chitin from crawfish shell and its conversion to chitosan have been developed. Crawfish chitosan has been demonstrated to be both an effective coagulant and ligand-exchange column material , respectively, for recovery of valuable organic compounds from seafood processing wastewater.

A novel process has successfully been developed by overcoming major difficulties through the elimination of number of process steps involved in the Classical Transesterification reaction during the preparation of Fatty Acid Methyl/Ethyl Ester (FAME.FAEE) called biodiesel. The Classical process with cost intensive process steps such as the utilization of excess alcohol, needing downstream distillation for the recovery and reutilization of excess alcohol/cosolvent, unrecoverable homogenous catalyst which consumes vast quantity of fresh distilled water during the purification of the product and downstream waste water treatment before its safe disposal to the surface water body. The Novel Process FAME/FAEE is produced from any vegetable oil irrespective of edible or inedible variety using sonication energy. The novelty of the finding is the use of only theoretical quantity of alcohol along with a co-solvent and reduced quantity of homogeneous catalyst. Under this condition neither the homogeneous catalyst goes to the FAME layer nor is the distillation needed. The same ester also has been prepared in high pressure high temperature reactor without using catalyst at sub critical temperature. The quality of prepared biodiesel without involving any purification step meets the ASTM standards. Blended Biodiesel with Common Diesel Fuel (CDF) and FAME is prepared, characterized and used as fuel in the Kirloskar make CI Engines. The evaluation of the engine performance result of pure CDF, B05 biodiesel, B10 biodiesel of all types of biodiesel prepared by using the feedstock of Soybean (Glycine max) and Karanja (Pongamia pinnate) oil along with their mixed oil provides useful information such as brake power, brake thermal efficiency, brake specific fuel consumption, etc, and established it as ideal fuel for unmodified CI engine.
As the environmental pollution by the drastic increase of vehicles becomes one of the social major concerns, the method of reducing the harmful exhaust emission is being the subject of interest. Utilization of waste edible oil as a raw material for biodiesel production is helpful not only for the stable supply of raw materials but also costing down the biodiesel price. This study was conducted to examine the combustion and thermal characteristics with mixing ratio of biodiesel fuel. Flash points, fire points and autoignition temperature (AIT) were measured by using Tag closed cup, Cleveland open cup flash point tester and AIT apparatus. As the result, flash points, fire points and AIT increased with percentage of more contained biodiesel.
Biodiesel is synthesized by transesterification of vegetable or animal oils with alcohols. Since it has similar characteristic with diesel fuel, it can be used as a fuel by mixing with diesel fuel. Moreover, it is advantageous that biodiesel can reduce air pollution emitted from fuel combustion and is produced from sustainable energy, biomass. Recently, many researchers have investigated biodiesel synthesis using supercritical methanol since it is economical due to shorter reaction time and simple separation/purification process, compared with conventional alkali- or acid-catalyzed process. By the development of biodiesel production process from waste edible oil using supercritical methanol, it can be expected to utilize potential energy resources, reduce carbon dioxide emission, and improve environmental conditions.
Edible insects have recently been increasingly promoted as a source of protein. As the number of farms rearing these insect increases, it is important to develop safe and nutritious feed sources to improve their commercial quality. The aim of the current study was to determine the effect of food by-products as feed supplements for the Korean rhinoceros beetle, Allomyrina dichotoma, which has been registered as a general food ingredient in Korea. We compared the effects of waste citrus peel, soybean curd cake, soybean oil meal, and brewers' dried grain on the growth of third instar larvae of A. dichotoma. Groups of larvae were fed with fermented sawdust and nine different combinations of the above by-products and the effects on their growth were measured until pupation. The highest survival rate was with feed supplemented with 10% brewers' dried grain (66.7%, p<0.05), and these larvae were also 26% heavier (p<0.05) than the control group that received no supplementation. In the 10% brewers' dried grain group, the larval period of third instar was shortened by almost 28 days (p<0.01) compared to the control group. Of all the groups, only that which was fed the brewers' dried grain supplement showed more than a 90% pupation rate (p<0.05). Therefore, brewers' dried grain may be useful as a source of feed for A. dichotoma.
A lot of water soluble proteins and lipids are released from minced mackerel meat and lost into the washing waste during the leaching process of Kamaboko or surimi manufacture. The removed proteins and lipids are not only an edible things but also a big burden for treating the wastewater. In order to recover the proteins from the effluent and to use as food stuff, the "pH-shifting" treatment, a modified isoelectric point precipitation method, was tried. This method is based on a myogen-aggregation phenomenon, which occurs when a solution of sarcoplasmic proteins is acidified or alkalified beyond the critical pH zone of 2∼3 or 12∼13 respectively and then neutralized. The maximum amount of precipitation was obtained by shifting the pH of the wastewater from original pH to isoelectric point (pH 4) or alkali pH 12 and then changing to neutral pH. The precipitates were easily collected by filteration or centrifuging at 10,000rpm. The oils which were only floating in the washing wastewater are easily recovered by seperating with oil separator after pouring. The recovered proteins were slightly denaturated during this pH shifting precipitation process, while the composition of amino acids was good balance as a food.
