The subjects of this study were 250 housewives, school students' mothers, living in Cheong-ju. Major findings were as follows: 1. In washing their faces and brushing their teeth, they saved the water very well, but in taking bath, washing the dished, using the water of the lavatory they did not save the water so well. 2. The kinds of the cleansers differed in taking a bath, washing the hair, and doing the laundry respectively : what they use most was hard soaps in taking bath, liquid cleansers mixed with shampoo and linse in washing the hair, and synthetic powder detergent in laundrying. They used more synthetic detergent than natural soaps, which is known to be a cause of water pollution. Especially, when they cleansed, they did not use a measuring cup. It resulted in the waste of detergent and accelerating of water pollution. Therefore, the environmental education for them was very urgently needed. 3. In handling domestic waste, the separate collection rate of empty bottles and old newspapers was very high, but that of used phone-call cards and used batteries was extremely low. It was truly nessesary to educate and step up publicic activities on the separate collection of phone-call cards and batteries caused environmental pollution. 4. The housewives had much knowledge about environmental pollution, but they did not practice it so well in their home. 5. The housewives made more effort than their children in preventing environmental pollution and saving resources. In conclusion, what is most important for solving environmental problem was for each citizen to make an effort to prevent environmental pollution, and the government's support and producing the atmosphere of the society for this was really needed.

  • Background : This study aimed at identifying the effect of the standardized protocol on lowering the incidence of the ventilator associated pneumonia(VAP). Methods : The standard protocol focusing on decreasing VAP was made and applied at 5 ICUs (Medical ICU, surgical ICU, Respiratory ICU, Neonatal ICU, Pediatric ICU) in a university affiliated tertiary hospital, from April 1, 2000 to Oct 31, 2000. The protocol involved 3 parts : hand washing, the suctioning method and ventilator circuit management. All the nursing personnel received intensive education which was consisted of lecture, video film and demonstration. 176 nurses reported the performance of handwashing pre and post intervention. And randomly selected 15 nurses were observed by charge nurse and the handwashing practice was analyzed pre and post intervention. The incidence of VAP was compared with the former year incidence. Results : The self reported frequency of hand washing increased. In the direct observation of handwashing, the frequency, time, thoroughness of hand washing during 8 hours day duty was found to be improved. The frequency was increased from 1.1 time to 4.1 times; the time was improved from 1.7 seconds to 5.7 seconds and the thoroughness of the washing practice was from 0.2 times to 3.0 times respectively (p<0.001). The incidence of VAP decreased from at a rate of 15.63 number of case per 1,000 ventilator-day (April 1~August 31, 1999) to 7.23 number of case per 1,000 ventilator-days(April 1~Oct 31, 2000)(P<0.001). Conclusion : We developed the protocols which included hand washing, the suctioning method, and ventilator circuit management. Through the implementation of the protocol, the performance of hand washing improved and the VAP incidence rate in ICU was decreased.

  • Background: The purpose of this study was to identify the connection between handwashing and toothbrushing, focusing on eating habits, and to verify whether eating habits can be used as an action cue for forming health habits. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study using secondary data from the 2019 community health survey. The participants included 229,099 adults aged 19 years or older, representative of the South Korean people. We employed two dependent variables: one was washing hands, and the other was brushing teeth. Eating habits was a major independent variable. Socioeconomic variables, such as age, gender, income, occupation, economic activity, education, and residence were adjusted as confounders. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to calculate adjusted odds ratio and 95% confidence intervals. Results: Most of the participants had good health behaviors: those who wash their hands and brush their teeth were each approximately 80%. Our finding indicated that brushing teeth and washing hands can be connected with eating habits. After adjusting for confounders, it was found that people who wash their hands before meals (compared to those who did not wash their hands before meals) had a higher toothbrushing rate after meals (i.e., socioeconomic status) (Adjusted Odds Ratio: 2.0, Confidence Intervals: 1.9 to 2.1). Conclusion: Those who practice either washing hands before meals or brushing teeth after meals were found to have a connection between washing hands and brushing teeth based on the results of practicing other health behaviors. This implies that eating habits can be connected as a behavior cue to promote health habits, such as washing hands before meals and brushing teeth after meals.
