Flow Characteristics of Gamcheon Harbour (감천항의 해수유동 특성)

  • Gamcheon Bay has complicated and unique flow pattern which is affected by topography characteristics of a semi-closed bay and warm water discharge from the power plant located at the bay. It is very important to consider warm water discharge with tidal period and wind effects, which are mainly acting on the surface flow patterns in Gamcheon Bay. The results of observation show as follows; i) Because Gamcheon bay has much elongated shape to the north-south direction and narrow entrance with two separated breakwaters, the flow is very weak inside the bay. ii) The main flow path is at the west side of the bay. The direction of flood current is northward along the west side of the bay and the direction of ebb current is southward along the west side of the bay. The southward direction of warm water discharge has curved to the west side of the bay. iii)At the period of flood current for neap tide, the flow direction is southward in the bay, which is thought by the effects of warm water discharge. But at the bottom layer, the effects of tidal current reached to the middle of the bay, and showed features like eddy. iv) The wind effect is very strong, especially, prominent in the west and east side of the bay.

  • A literature study on cancer therapy of warm-hot oriental medicine was done, and the results were as follows. 1. In oriental medicine, oncogens are six exopathogens, seven modes of emotion, overwork, pathogenic factors, and especially related with pathologic cold situation. 2. There are many capillaries in tuomr, and because temperature of inner space of tumor is higher than normal organization. Tumor cell has a character which is weak for high temperature. 3. Warm-hot herb drugs have effects of dissipating mass, warming kidney to reinforce yang and dispering, so it has a function of suppressing tumor as well as improving immunity in cancer therapy. 4. In traditional medical books, main prescriptions of cancer therapy are xinzhiyinyanggongjiwan(新製陰陽攻積丸), qianjinxiaoshiwan(千金硝石丸), feiqiwan(肥氣丸), xibenwan(息賁丸), fuliangwan(伏梁丸), beiqiwan, bentunwan(賁豚丸), zengsunwujiwan(增損五積丸), and these are composed of warm-hot herb drugs. 5. In current, the study of warm-hot drugs is progressed in immunological capacity, anti-tumor activity, stimulating bone marrow and regulating hormone secretion. It will be expected that advanced study of these must be accomplished in cancer patients.

Inhabit Features of a Brown Alga Undaria peterseniana in Coastal Area of Ulleung Island (울릉도 연안산 해조류 넓미역 Undaria peterseniana의 서식 특성)

  • Brown alga Undaria peterseniana has been interested in the commercial scale aquaculture for warm water species development in southern coastal area of Korea. However, this species was classified an endangered species caused by a decrease in habitat and natural population. In this study, inhabit characteristics of U. peterseniana was investigated in their natural habitat of Ulleung Island, Korea. The U. peterseniana population was occurred dense patches at 20~30m depth. Total length of the alga reached 1.0~2.0m and the largest width ranged 10.0~35.0cm during the study. In 2013, habitats of this species increased two sites compared with the previous year and their distribution extended to low depth (10m) of coastal area. In long-term data, seawater temperature revealed a continuous increment by strong going north of East Korea Warm Current or Ulleung Warm Eddy turning around the coast of Ulleung Island. It suggested that habitat extension of U. peterseniana may be caused by suitable settlement condition and increase of warm water around the coastal area. Current studies of this species may be continuously required in the possibility of fisheries resources as aquaculture species and index species of increment of water temperature at the fixed monitoring site in East Sea. This is the first study to research ecological feature U. peterseniana population at the natural habitat of Ulleung Island.

  • Adhesives are becoming increasingly accepted for advanced engineering/boding tasks. Therefore the understanding of the basic principles and the benefits of elastic bonding and structural bonding respectively is of utmost importance. Structural bonding means adhesive performance in load-bearing environments. Furthermore. the time to achieve handling strength has an impact on the economics of an assembly line. The paper gives briefly a summary about the fundamentals of elastic bonding and discusses different adhesive systems in the context of handling strength. Hereby the focus lies on the Warm Melt Technology, and its potential is compared to standard adhesives (l-part, 2-part and Booster Technology, a special 2-C system). Examples illustrate their economical benefits. A Study on the Application of an Environment Friendly Crossing Wood Drain for Easy Forest Road Management (산림관리도로의 생력화를 위한 친환경적 횡단목 배수로의 적용에 관한 연구)

  • We introduce a simplified crossing wood drain disperses rain water concentration and is used to protect the road surface from erosion due to flooding over the unpaved road. The efficiency of a simplified crossing wood drain was also investigated. A structure of simplified crossing wood drain can be produced within 10 minutes and installed within 18 minutes. The cost of the this product is 1/5 of that of the existing crossing drain product. The production and installation cost can be reduced according to dexterity. In the context of such applications, the degrees of damage for a rubber pad, which preventing the rain overflow, were varied according to their materials. A type of 8.2mm thick fabric rubber was the most suitable in this study.

Sea level observations in the Korean seas by remote sensing

  • Sea level variations and sea surface circulations in the Korean seas were observed by Topex/Poseidon altimeter data from 1993 through 1997. In sea level variations, the West and South Sea showed relatively high variations with comparison to the East Sea. Then, the northern and southern area in the West Sea showed the range of 20∼30cm and 18∼24cm, and the northern west of Jeju island and the southern west of Tsushima island in the South Sea showed the range of 15∼20cm and 10∼15cm, respectively. High variations in the West Sea were results to the inflow in sea surface of Yellow Sea Warm Current (YSWC) and bottom topography. Sea level variations in the South Sea were due to two branch currents (Jeju Warm Current and East Korea Warm Current) originated from Kuroshio Current (KC). In sea surface circulations, there existed remarkably three eddies circulations in the East Sea that are mainly connected with North Korea Cold Current (NKCC), East Korea Warm Current (EKWC) and Tushima Warm Current (TWC). Their eddies are caused basically to the influence of currents in sea surface circulations; Cyclone (0.03 cm/see) in the Wonsan bay off shore with NKCC, and anticyclone (0.06 cm/see) in the southwestern area of Ulleung island with EKWC, and cyclone (0.01 cm/see) in the northeastern area of Tushima island with TWC, respectively.

  • Spatial distribution of phytoplankton pigment concentration (PPC) and sea surface temperature (SST) around the East Korean Warm Current (EKWC) was described, using both ocean color images and advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR) images. Water mass in this region can be classified into five categories in the horizontal profile of PPC and SST, nLw(normalized water-leaving radiance) images: (1) coastal cold water region associated with concentrations of dissolved organic material or yellow colored substances and suspended sediments, (2) cold water region of thermal frontal occurred by a combination of phytoplankton absorption and suspended materials, (3) warm water overlay region by the phytoplankton absorption than the suspended materials; (4) warm water region occurred by the low phytoplankton absorption, and (5) offshore region occurred by the high phytoplankton absorption. In particular, the highest PPC area appeared in the ocean color and SST images with a band shaped distribution of the thermal front and ocean color front region, which is located the coastal cold waters along western thermal front of the warm streamer of the EKWC.

Evaluation of seasonal effects on production performance of lactation sows reared in two different environments in South Korea

  • This study was conducted to evaluate seasonal effects on production performance of lactation sows reared in two different environments in South Korea. A total of 76 sows ($Landrace{\times}Yorkshire$) from the Dankook University experimental farm and 120 sows ($Landrace{\times}Yorkshire$) from a commercial farm were collected. In the current study, reduced (p < 0.01) feed intake and energy intake during lactation were observed in warm season compared with cool season in both farms. Sows in cool season had higher backfat thickness at weaning but lower back fat loss (p < 0.01) than those in warm season. The weaning to estrus interval was lower (p < 0.01) in cool season than in warm season. Piglets weaned in warm season had lower (p < 0.01) body weight (BW), body weight gain (BWG), and average daily gain (ADG) at weaning than did those weaned in cool season on the Dankook University farm, whereas the reduction effect was only observed during 0 - 21 d on the commercial farm (p < 0.01). Moreover, piglets weaned in cool season had higher BW, BWG, and ADG (p < 0.05) on both farms. In conclusion, our results indicate that warm season had very negative effects on feed intake and production performance of lactating sows and piglets.

Mechanical and wear properties evaluation of Al/Al2O3 composites fabricated by combined compo-casting and WARB process

  • Compo-casting method is one of the popular technique to produce metal based matrix composites. But, one of the main challenges in this process is un-uniform spreading of reinforced subdivisions (particles) inside the metallic matrix and the lack of desirable mechanical properties of the final produced composites due to the low bonding strength among the metal matrix and reinforcement particles. To remove these difficulties and to promote the mechanical properties of these kind of composites, the WARM ARB technique was utilized as supplementary technique to heighten the mechanical and microstructural evolution of the casted Al/Al2O3 composite strips. The microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of these composites have been considered versus different WARM ARB cycles by tensile test, average Vickers micro hardness test, wear test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The SEM results revealed that during the higher warm- ARB cycles, big alumina clusters are broken and make a uniform distribution of alumina particles. It was shown that cumulating the forming cycles improved the mechanical properties of composites. In general, combined compo-casting and ARB process would consent making Al/Al2O3 composites with high consistency, good microstructural and mechanical properties.
