  • In this paper, we discuss the current status of ROK-US wargame model interoperability and propose the future federation architecture. ROK and US Armed Forces have made an effort to make their wargame model interoperable to fulfill operational requirements since 1999. Currently, they have achieved some degree of their final goals even though there is long way to go. ROK Armed Forces is now considering future federation architecture. We propose the future federation architecture of ROK-US wargame model interoperability considering technical advantages and system availability. It will be the next federation architecture led by ROK side for the ROK Armed Forces joint exercise and ROK-US combined exercise.

  • Military wargame simulation models must support the HLA in order to facilitate interoperability with other simulations, and using parallel simulation engines offer efficiency in reducing system overhead generated by propelling interoperability. However, legacy military simulation model engines process events using sequential event-driven method. This is due to problems generated by parallel processing such as synchronous reference to global data domains. Additionally. using legacy simulation platforms result in insufficient utilization of multiple CPUs even if a multiple CPU system is under use. Therefore, in this paper, we propose conversing the simulation engine to an object model-based parallel simulation engine to ensure military wargame model's improved system processing capability, synchronous reference to global data domains, external simulation time processing, and the sequence of parallel-processed events during a crash recovery. The converted parallel simulation engine is designed and implemented to enable parallel execution on a multiple CPU system (SMP).

  • War simulation system is a virtual space that my tactical simulation exercise is held. The data used in this system are considered sensitive and needs to be protected. But suity vulnerabilities and possible security loopholes were not considered when designing the war game simulation system. So currently the systemis highly vulnerable against hackers and data leakages. This paper proposed a security system for war game simulation system based on considering the currently vulunerabilities and possible suity leakages. The proposed security system supports security patches. In this paper, we analyze vulunerabilities of the running environment of current system and we design and implement the security system that is consisted of three components : Authentication System, Encryption System and Network Security System. The security patches are safe and there are no negative effects on the system's performance. The patches are proved to be effective and very reliable towards solving the security vulnerabilities.

  • This paper deals with complex system theory to describe land combat situation using EINSTein (Enhanced ISAAC Neural Simulation Tool) simulation model. Many studies have shown that existing Lanchester equations used in most wargame models does not describe changes of combat units, real land warfare situation and qualitative factors in combat. Future warfare will be a non-linear combat with various weapon system and complex combat units. EINSTein models is an agent-based simulation tool using complex system theory. We have compared and tested land combat results with Lanchester models and EINSTein models. The results have shown that EINSTein model has a possibility to apply and analyze land warfare more properly than Lanchester models.

  • A complex system such as defense systems is in a form of System of Systems (SoS) in which each component is a system being independent of other component systems. Dynamical behavior of SoS is represented by a composition of behaviors of component systems. Thus, a M&S tool/environment would not be efficient for development of heterogeneous models nor for simulation in a centralized environment. Moreover, such an environment restricts reusability and composability. This paper presents an interoperation method for M&S of defense systems as SoS. The approach first develops component system models using tools, each specialized to M&S of each component system. It then interoperates such simulations together to simulate a whole system as SoS. HLA/RTI is employed for such interoperation, which is a DoD/IEEE standard to support interoperation. We will introduce a case study for interoperable simulation of defense systems, which consists of a wargame simulator and a communication simulator.

  • In the performance analysis of a weapon system, the combat effectiveness is difficult to go beyond the conceptual level in the early stages of development. This is especially true in the case of new concept of weapon system that has never existed before. In this study, with the aim of analyzing the effectiveness of small personal guided weapons, the design of the warhead and the detonation test were carried out and the results were analyzed. Afterwards, trajectory of fragments were calculated from the results, and it is applied to the anti-personnel effectiveness logic which is a part of combat simulation tool. At the same time, delivery accuracy logic was constructed from Monte-Carlo simulation with 6-DOF trajectory model. Subsequent simulated experiments were conducted with test scenarios to confirm the simulation logic reflecting the results of the warhead detonation tests for verifying the simulation approach of weapon systems, and it was confirmed that the simulation logic incorporating the results of the warhead detonation tests functioned properly.

  • LVC(Live-Virtual-Constructive) training system is drawing attention due to changes in battlefield situation and the development of advanced information and communication technologies. The ROKAF(Republic of Korea Air Force) plans to construct LVC training system capable of scientific training. This paper analyzes the results of V-C interoperability test with three fighter simulators as virtual systems and a theater-level wargame model as a constructive system. The F-15K, KF-16, and FA-50 fighter simulators, which have different interoperable methods, were converted into a standard for simulation interoperability. Using the integrated field environment simulator, the fighter simulators established a mutually interoperable environment. In addition, the Changgong model, which is the representative training model of the Air Force, was converted to the standard for simulation interoperability, and the integrated model was implemented with optimized interoperability performance. Throughput experiments, It was confirmed that the fighter simulators and the war game model of the ROKAF could be interoperable with each other. The results of this study are expected to be a good reference for the future study of the ROKAF LVC training system.

  • Recently, the US commanded a wargame simulation system of a combined ROK-US exercise with single federation. However, after the OPCON transfer, many limitations to the single federation have been cited such as security policies and information protection. We suggest a hierarchical federation as a way to overcome these problems. Regarding HLA rules, the participants use the same FOM and RTI in single federation. There are limitations to implement CI in applying heterogeneous FOMs and RTIs in current single federation. Therefore, we propose implementing CI with heterogeneous FOMs and RTIs in a hierarchical federation. This system overcomes the weaknesses of the system structure, which is a disadvantage of the single federation. In the federation test, we can apply heterogeneous FOMs and RTIs and achieve similar performance to the current combined exercise simulation. In conclusion, ROK should lead the simulation system of combined exercises using the CI after the OPCON transfer.

  • Wargame simulators are widely used in the field of defence modeling and simulation. Because of increasing importance of communication effects on the warfare, the war game simulator is also required to reflect communication effects. One way to satisfy the requirement is the interoperation simulation between war game simulator and communication effect simulators. This paper shows the application of interoperation simulation between war game and communication effect simulators using HLA(High-Level Architecture)/RTI(RunTime Infrastructure). The war game simulator mainly deal with the engagement of troops and the troops communicate each other at the mission execution level. In the other hand, The communication effect simulator perform communication actions between the troops in the engineering level. Using the interoperation simulation, we can reflect the communication effects on the war game simulation. We show various applications of the interoperation simulation with the point of the war game and communication effect simulator. with a case study, we explain the interoperation simulation improves the reality and fidelity of the war game simulator and how the interoperation simulation can be applied to developing doctrines and real communication system.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose a methodology that can measure the combat effectiveness of attack helicopter which Korea army will be operating in the near future. To measure the combat effectiveness, firstly, we use a wargame model, AAsim (Army Aviation simulation), as a analytic simulation model which is used to analyze DOTMLPF and operation in army aviation field, secondly we use an Analytic Hierarchy Process by opinion of experts. For simulation and AHP, we consider anti armored corps operation reflecting attack helicopter's combat effectiveness. As a result of this study, the combat effectiveness per each attack helicopter can be measured and this combat effectiveness is useful for reasonable decision making such as selection helicopter type, quantity when acquiring new weapon system.
