  • This research was carried out to obtain the fundamental data for the development of the technology and practical use of far-infrared radiation(IR) drying of quarter-sliced decorative veneers of walnut and red oak. The average drying rates of IR drying were about one and half to four times those of kiln drying and this tendency was prominent in thin veneer. The end wavinesses of the IR-dried veneers were smaller than those of kiln-dried veneers. These were largely recovered by the cold treatments after drying. The consumed electric power for IR drying was about one-fifth to two-fifthes compared to that for kiln drying.

  • The phenolic substances contents of 45 plant foods in Korean diet were determined by different methods. Total phenolics contents by Folin-Denis method were $0.1{\sim}5.8%$ (dry matter basis), in which persimmon leaf, chestnut's inner skin, Chinese quince, walnut, sunflower seed and arrowroot exhibited the higher levels above 2%. Condensed tannin contents by vanillin method were $0{\sim}48%$, in which Chinese quince and chestnut's inner layer gave very high levels. Protein-precipitable phenolic substances ranged from 0.4% to 2.2%, in which chestnut's inner layer, walnut and Chinese quince had the highest content. The ability of phenolics to form precipitate was higher with pepsin and albumin than with trypsin. Among different phenolics content, total phenlolics correlated significantly with protein-precipitable phenolics (r=0.65) and condensed tannin (r=0.56). Chinese quince, chestnut's inner skin and sorghum showed a relatively lower degree of polymerization, as expressed by vanillin/FolinDenis ratio. Processed foods from buckwheat, acorn, mugwort and arrowroot showed a lower content of phenolic substances, suggesting a negligible adverse effect on the bioavailability of food proteins, if any.

  • Soil moisture is a key factor to control the exchange of water and energy between the surface and the atmosphere. In recent, many researches for spatial and temporal variability analyses of soil moisture have been conducted. In this study, we analyzed the spatio-temporal variability of soil moisture in Walnut Gulch Experimental Watershed, Arizona, U.S. during the Soil Moisture Experiment 2004 (SMEX04). The spatio-temporal variability analyses were performed to understand sensitivity of five observation sites with precipitation and relationship between mean soil moisture, and its standard deviation and coefficient of variation at the sites, respectively. It was identified that log-normal distribution was superior to replicate soil moisture spatial patterns. In addition, precipitation was identified as a key physical factor to understand spatio-temporal variability of soil moisure based on the temporal stability analysis. Based on current results, higher spatial variability was also observed which was agreed with the results of previous studies. The results from this study should be essential for improvement of the remotely sensed soil moisture retrieval algorithm.

  • A review was made about the foods for korean festival days through such literature as kyongdojapji ( 京都雜誌 ), youlyangsesiki ( 洌陽歲時記 ) and Dongkooksesiki ( 東國歲時記 ). The focus was on the 'gala foods' in Kangweon province. A survey was made on two separate areas; urban and rural district, The result showed that there was no difference in celebrating gala days between two separate area. Those festival days which are celebrating are seolnal (New Year's day) (98.5%), chusok (mid-autumn festival) (97.7%), Sangwonnal (the 15th day of January) (95.1%), and dongjee (one of 24 seasons by lunar calender) (83.1%) in the order of higher percentages. Only less than 10% of the subjects for this survey are keeping on celebrating napyong (3.5%), baikjong (the 15th day of July) (5.4%), jungyang (the 9th days of September) (6.7%) samjinnal (8.6%) and yoodooil (the 15th day of June) (9.2%). Gala foods, such as dduggook, mandoogook, injulmi (glutinous rice cake) and sikhe (sweet rice beverage) on Seolnal, ogokbab (the rice made of five kinds of cereals), jinchas (various kinds of boiled vegetables) and buryum (chestnut, pinenut and walnut) on sangwonnal, songpyun (rice cake of chusok) on chusok, patjook (rice-gruel mixed with red beans) on dongjii were being enjoyed by most people. Gala foods on seolnal and chusok had a greater variety, compared with those enjoyed on other festival days. I think it is a pity that other gala foods except those just mentioned are enjoyed in a lower percentage or almost forgotten.

  • Primary malignant melanoma of the esophagus(PMME) is an uncommon neoplasm. And the world literature reports only about 200 cases. A case of primary malignant melanoma of the esophagus is presented, and followed by review of the literature. In our patient, the walnut-sized melanoma was located at the midportion of esophagus and there were two small satellite lesions at the esophagogastric junction. The main mass was diagnosed as primary malignant melanoma histologically and immunohistologically. The tumor was curatively resected by the transthoracic subtotal esophagectomy and the 2 fields node dissection. Post- operative immunotherapy was performed but the tumor recurred 7 months later at the stomach.

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of food allergies in Korean children aged 6 to 12 years increased from 10.9% in 1995 to 12.6% in 2012 according to nationwide population studies. Treatment for food allergies is avoidance of allergenic-related foods and epinephrine auto-injector (EPI) for accidental allergic reactions. This study compared knowledge and perception of food allergy labeling and dietary practices of students. SUBJECTS/METHODS: The study was conducted with the fourth to sixth grade students from an elementary school in Yongin. A total of 437 response rate (95%) questionnaires were collected and statistically analyzed. RESULTS: The prevalence of food allergy among respondents was 19.7%, and the most common food allergy-related symptoms were urticaria, followed by itching, vomiting and nausea. Food allergens, other than 12 statutory food allergens, included cheese, cucumber, kiwi, melon, clam, green tea, walnut, grape, apricot and pineapple. Children with and without food allergy experience had a similar level of knowledge on food allergies. Children with food allergy experience thought that food allergy-related labeling on school menus was not clear or informative. CONCLUSION: To understand food allergies and prevent allergic reactions to school foodservice among children, schools must provide more concrete and customized food allergy education.

  • Immature teratoma can be viewed as intermediate between mature teratoma and embryonal carcinoma. Unlike the mature teratoma, elements of the three perm cell layers are incompletely differentiated and not arranged in organoid fashion In some area, more mature forms of these tissues may also be seen, Although this tumor is clearly malignant, they may not display clear-cut cytologic features of malignancy. The clinical prognosis is poor. We have experienced one case of recurrent immature teratoma. In first operation[1987, April], tumor of anterior mediastinum was removed with wedge resection of ant. segment of RUL % med. segment of RML. In 2nd operation[1990, June], recurrent teratoma of right inner thoracic wall was resected with partial 5th rib resection and wedge resection of lat. segment of middle lobe. Two months later, the 3rd operation[1990, September] was done, which was a removal of mass on thoracic wall near sup, segment of RLL and partial rib resection of 3rd, 4th & 5th. In November 1990, last operation[4th operation] was made. It was enucleation of walnut sized tumor located between medial segment of RML, and 4th. intercostal space, well encapsulated with endothoracic fascia and invaded into lung parenchyme, Adjuvant chemotherapy was done after each operation, but radiotherapy[5000 Rad] was done only after 1st operation. There was no evidence of recurrence after last operation. The patient is well-being still now.
