  • This paper presents the results of a numerical investigation on the behavior of earth retaining wall system with emphasis on the groundwater lowering. Using the 2D stress-pore pressure coupled analysis, the effects of ground excavation and groundwater interaction were examined using wall horizontal deformation, ground surface movement, plastic strain pattern, effective stress distribution and axial stress of strut. In addition, based on the results from a parametric study on a wide range of soil profile and initial ground water table level, the ranges of wall displacement and ground deformation were suggested quantitatively.

  • In the present study, characteristics of steady state laminar flows of a straight duct connected to a 180$^{\circ}$ curved duct were examined in the entrance region through experimental and numerical analyses. For the analysis, the governing equations of laminar flows in the Cartesian coordinate system were applied. Flow characteristics such as velocity profiles, and secondary flows were investigated numerically and experimentally in a square cross-sectional straight duct by the PIV system and a CFD code(STAR CD). For the PIV measurement, working fluid produced from mosquito coils smoke. The experimental data were obtained at 9 points dividing the test sections by 400 mm. Experimental and numerical results can be summarized as follows. Critical Reynolds number, Recr which indicates transition from laminar steady flow to transition steady flow was 2,150. As Reynolds number, Re, was increased, dimensionless velocity profiles at the outer wall were increased due to the effect of the centrifugal force and the secondary flows. The intensity of a secondary flow became stronger at the inner wall rather than the outer wall regardless of Reynolds number.

  • Hot-wire measurements of second and third-order mean products of velocity fluctuations have been made in the separated, reattached, and redeveloping boundary layer behind a vertical fence. Mean velocity, wall static pressure distributions have also been measured in the whole flow field. Upstream of the reattachment point, the separated shear layer developes as a free mixing layer, but the gradient of the maximum slope thickness, turbulent intensities and the Reynolds shear stress are higher than that of the mixing layer due to initial streamline curvature and the effects of highly turbulent recirculating flow region. In the reattachment region, Reynolds shear stress and triple products near the surface is far more rapid than the decrease of the shear stress; that is the presence of the solid wall has a marked effect on the apparent gradient diffusivity of intensity or shear stress and throws doubts upon the usefulness of the simple gradient diffusivity model in this region.

  • The objective of this study is to predict fracture movements accurately and reliably by nonlinear analysis of the response of RC shear wall or RC flange sections. Hognestad's and Vallenas's theories are used for concrete model and Ramberg-Osgood's theory is used for steel model. Non-linear analysis considering confined concrete and unconfined concrete is performed. Mander's Fiber Approach Section analysis, new strain profile considering the Gamma factor are used to this section analysis. The section analysis considering cases of precracked, uncracked, boundary warping and shear warping is performed.

  • A single free jet formed by the interaction of two curved wall jets on a Cylinder surface is defined as "the Coanda nozzle jet" in this study. In order to investigate the characteristics of Coanda nozzle jet, an experimental analysis was carried out; measurements of the static pressure distribution on the cylinder surface, the mean velocity profile, the turbulence intensity, and the Reynolds shear stress by using x-type hot-wire probe.ire probe.

  • Vertical structures of wind-driven and tidal currents in a rectangular shaped uniform-depth basin of homogeneous water have been investigated using a mode-splitted, multi-level grid-box, hydrodynamic numerical model. The model was verified using analytical solutions for various vertical eddy viscosity profiles such as: a constant eddy viscosity, a linearly decreasing or increasing variation with depth, a quadratic variation with depth and an exponential variation with depth. Particular attention has been paid on the effects of "near-surface wall layer" on vertical shear of velocity. In numerical calculations, the whole water depth was divided into 13 levels with an unequal grid spacing. the model satisfactorily reproduces the velocity profile, but in case the eddy viscosity decreases rapidly with depth as in quadratical or exponential variation with depth, the vertical gradient of velocity near the bottom became very steep, and analytical solutions and numerical results showed some discrepancy. The vertical structures of horizontal velocity vary with both the depth-averaged value of eddy viscosity and its profiles. the velocity near the sea surface and near the bottom responded sensitively to the eddy viscosity of wall layer. For wind-driven current, the strong velocity shear was generated near the sea surface as eddy viscosity near the surface became small. For tidal current, the velocity above the sea bottom layer was almost constant regardless of the profiles of vertical eddy viscosity, but velocity in the sea bottom layer showed strong shear as eddy viscosity became small.

  • The etching technology of the high aspect ratio contact(HARC) is necessary at the critical contact processes of semiconductor devices. Etching the $SiO_{2}$ contact hole with the sub-micron design rule in manufacturing VLSI devices, the unexpected phenomenon of 'profile tilting' or 'bottom distortion' is often observed. This makes a short circuit between neighboring contact holes, which causes to drop seriously the device yield. As the aspect ratio of contact holes increases, the high C/F ratio gases, $C_{4}F_{6}$, $C_{4}F_{8}$ and $C_{5}F_{8}$, become widely used in order to minimize the mask layer loss during the etching process. These gases provide abundant fluorocarbon polymer as well as high selectivity to the mask layer, and the polymer with high sticking yield accumulates at the top-wall of the contact hole. During the etch process, many electrons are accumulated around the asymmetric hole mouth to distort the electric field, and this distorts the ion trajectory arriving at the hole bottom. These ions with the distorted trajectory induce the deformation of the hole bottom, which is called 'profile tilting' or 'bottom distortion'. To prevent this phenomenon, three methods are suggested here. 1) Using lower C/F ratio gases, $CF_{4}$ or $C_{3}F_{8}$, the amount of the Polymer at the hole mouth is reduced to minimize the asymmetry of the hole top. 2) The number of the neighboring holes with equal distance is maximized to get the more symmetry of the oxygen distribution around the hole. 3) The dual frequency plasma source is used to release the excessive charge build-up at the hole mouth. From the suggested methods, we have obtained the nearly circular hole bottom, which Implies that the ion trajectory Incident on the hole bottom is symmetry.

  • The aim of this investigation was to examine the influence of extrusion on dietary fiber profile and the content of bioactive compounds, rutin and quercetin in young sprout, whole seed, and matured stem of Tartary buckwheat. WSI(water soluble index) is increased by a function of both screw profile and process temperature, compared to control in different parts of Buckwheat. Also, WSI of ME is increased more than 5.2 times in grain, compared to that of control. The effect of precooking by extrusion on the dietary fiber profile of buckwheat flour was evaluated. Precooking by extrusion significantly increased SDF in flour, although in most cases extrusion decrease in TDF a little. The thermo-mechanical treatment undergone by the buckwheat flour during extrusion led to redistribute part IDF fraction to SDF, leading to an increase in the latter. The content of rutin was increased about two fold in extruded flour of sprout, compared to in control. This increase maybe why these compounds are released from cell wall by high shear processing under high temperature.
