Ancient tombs are typically comprised of confined rooms, which have different spatial characteristics than the external environment because they are covered by heavy layers of soil. In this study, we examined the thermal energy flow from the outside to inside of Songsan-ri tomb No. 6. External heat flows slowly to the inside because of heavy soil layer, and the presence of several rooms and entrances. For this reason, it takes about two months for the air temperature to travel from the outside to the inside of the tomb. Interestingly, the gradational inflow of thermal energy from outside the tomb leads to delicate horizontal and vertical variations in the wall temperature. These micro-environmental differences occur in the inner tomb every year, so we can expect them to cause condensation with regularity. In addition, we show that the previously installed forced circulation air conditioning system risks fatal damage to the mural wall painting. The results of this research suggest an optimal air conditioning system and optimized space planning to conserve Songsan-ri tomb No. 6 and its mural painting.
This research investigated and analyzed the structure and material feature of the wall behind the Buddha of main temple in An-dong Bongjeonsa through applying the natural scientific method, in order to closely examine its production technique. As a result of the research, the structural and material feature of the wall has been clarified and its production technique applied to the structure has been understood in a comprehensive sense. The target sample basically adopted the two-layer wall system, which showed a symmetric structure to the center made with the wooden material, and is estimated to follow the structural tendency of a general wall which is organized with the first layer, the midterm layer, and the painting wall layer. Each layer formed by the production procedure showed difference in the material and production method according to its characteristics and roles. And it was identified that, in general, the higher a layer lies, the finer grains it has. Combination of the main materials and the additives, used for the wall forming, was presumed to contribute to improving its durability and conservativeness. Also interaction between the materials generating the conservativeness and the producer's technical effect seemed to fortify solidity of the wall.
This article is about a joint project carried out by the National Museum of Korea and the Tokyo Cultural Properties Research Institute for the conservation of central Asia Wall painting that has been selected for the exhibition at the new Seoul National Museum of Korea at Yongsan. The investigation of the wall painting revealed very useful information. This includes the condition of the object, and the identification of evident damage, such as cracks, loss of pigment, plus materials and methods employed during the object's creation, as well as previous conservation treatment. The object was mainly made by applying plaster to the body (wall) that consisted of a mixture of soils and rice straws. Then, on the surface of the wall-painting, pigments were used to draw and to colour it. As a part of the investigation, radiocarbon dating was conducted using straw samples taken from the object. The result indicates that the object is probably dated form between the end of the 10th Century and the beginning of the 13th Century. The result of X-ray diffraction also revealed the composition of the pigments used on the surface. These are 1. gypsom [Ca(SO4)·2H2O], CaSO4 and Calcite (CaCO3) and Calcite (CaCO3) that were used for the white background. 2. Pb3O4 and led Arsenate [Pb(As2O6) that were used for the red colouring. 3. Cuprite (Cu2O), Arsenolite (As2O3) and Arsenic Oxide (As2O4) that were used for the green colouring.
A diagnostic investigation of the conservation state of damaged murals of the Payathonzu temple mainly indicated delamination, exfoliation, and contamination of the coloring layer; cracks and damage to the wall; and separation from gaps. In particular, vulnerabilities resulting from cracks in the wall and damage from gaps demand swift reinforcement measures. Ultrasonic testing uncovered damage caused by gaps between the base layer and plastered wall in several areas of the mural, vulnerable parts in the wall around the cracks, and considerable degradation of the physical properties where cracks and gaps were severe. Moisture measurements identified vast disparities in moisture depending on location even within a single area of the mural, and it was clear that these disparities were the result of environmental conditions such as humidity. Damage to the murals in monument 477 was the most severe, and a diagnostic of the physical properties uncovered severe physical damage to the upper part of the mural as well as to the corridor ceiling, thus presenting the need for conservation treatment utilizing scientific diagnosis as well as objective data.
Under the assumption that techniques of interior decoration often frequently used by people of the antique Greece and Rome became basis for scientific perspective in the period of Renaissance, this study analyzed characteristics of wall paintings excavated as relics of the antique Greece and Rome. The result of the study can be summarized as follows ; (1) Decorative wall paintings which were and have been excavated from relics of the antique Roman cities are characterized by single and multiple point techniques as their perspective. The two techniques were later adapted by people of the Baroque in the 16th century who recognized and expressed space through putting it into a certain framework. (2) Such antique wall paintings drawn using the technique of single point clearly indicate that the technique was not fully created in the period of Renaissance but developed by people of the antique Greece and Rome. Unlike its present form, the technique was unsophisticated and poor in many respects when first created. Since then, it has become manipulated as spatial recognition has been developed in various ways. (3) Illustrations on vase surfaces or wall-decorative painting panels of the antique Greece were painted mainly through the technique of multiple points which helped changes in the sense of space. The technique were later complied with by the theory of cubism which was emerged in the late 19th century. In other words, the technique was developed over times into a basis of the theory. (4) Some of the antique Roman and Greek wall paintings were drawn by using the method of single point perspective. When the height of the wall foundation, 90cm, as specified in [Ten Books of Architecture] by Vitrubius, the viewpoint for the method almost complied with the height of spectators' view, or 150cm. This height is almost same as the height of the view point employed by wall paintings in the Renaissance period.
The purpose of this study was to examine the current interior conditions of internal medicines and the patients'responses to them. Data were collected through questionnaire survey including observations and interviews. The sample consisted of 43 internal medicines in Busan. The data were analyzed by using SPSS-PC. The major findings were as follows: (1) Most of the medicines had a size of 20-50 pyung(66-165$m^2$). The preferred size of internal medicine was 30-70 Pyung. (2) The typical layout of reception room, doctor's room, and injection room was L shape. (3) The most preferred room was waiting room and the worst one was injection room. (4) Painting and tile were mostly used as interior finishing materials. The patients preferred wall papers as wall and ceiling material, and marbles as floor material. Also, the most preferred interior images were modern, western, urban, open, simple, warm and popular images.
The four walls of mural paintings in Afrasiab, Samarkand, have discovered: the indian-concept east wall, the west with the paintings of envoys from a number of countries bringing in King's letters or gifts, the south describing traditional ceremony celebrating the new year, the north with a picture of a Chinese princess on board beside hunting scenes. Overall, Sogdians in Afrasiab mural paintings of 7th century had following costume codes: a very short haircut or the Turkic queue, a rather-narrow-sleeved caftan with round-neck, a belt and boots. The west wall showed various costume style of a set of envoys from countries. First, a Turkic envoy had 3-6 rows of long plaits, wearing a caftan with two lapels and a belt - interestingly, Sogdian and Turkic nobles didn't wear pochettes. Second, a Chaganiyan had a hairband on his short hair, and his colorful round-neck caftan is decorated with animal-patterned medallions and a golden belt. Third, a Chach wore a jewelled hairband, putting gaiters on his pants. Forth, a Chinese was in putou with a round-neck caftan, and with a belt and sword around his waist. Lastly, also appeared a Koguryo envoy in white putou with a double-bird-feathered crown on top, wearing a long-sleeved yellow v-neck top, a belt, narrow-cuffed pants and boots. Identical to the Sogdian statues excavated in various regions of China are the appearance of big eyes and nose -similar to the warrior stone in Korea- a hairband, and a pochette down from the waist line. During this period, white and red were considered as prevailing colors for clothing: red and yellow among Turks. The costumes of characters in Afrasiab mural paintings were preferably made with the animal-patterned, sophiscated samite Zandanachi of Sogdiana.
This study examines the status and the physical features of Paraloid B-72 layers with examination of microstructure and analysis of organic matters. Paraloid B-72 layers were coated on samples from the colour layer of outer wall painting in Mireuk hall in Geumsan temple. On the basis of the previous examination result, it has made the samples which are similar to outer wall in Mireuk hall in Geumsan temple. The samples can be divided into two, one; 5% Paraloid B-72 coating and another is without coating. Then samples have been experimented under the compulsive environments of infrared radiation and immersion, thereafter compared the results of the damages and physical features between two samples. As a result of the comparison, the sample with Paraloid B-72 had more serious cracks, exfoliations and peeling layers than that of without Paraloid B-72. Otherwise, in the examination of ultraviolet radiation, the sample with Paraloid B-72 coating showed weaker physical properties, less density in structure of colour layer and less hardness in surface of colour layer than the sample without coating. The percentage of moisture content after the ultraviolet radiation was higher in the sample without Paraloid B-72 than the sample with Paraloid B-72 coating. Observing the conditions before the ultraviolet radiation, the sample with Paraloid B-72 coating demonstrated lower rate in moisture evaporation rate than the sample without Paraloid B-72. As a consequence, in examination of this samples, the change of physical features are increased in the sample with Paraloid B-72 coating than that without Paraloid B-72 when compulsive environment of heat, moisture and ultraviolet rays for a short term are imposed.
The five pieces (Bon 4054, 4074, 4077, 4096 and Bon 4097)of the Central Asia murals housed in the National Museum of Korea were conserved for approximately 2 years. The Central Asia murals conserved for this time have undergone the processes of cleaning, reinforcing pigment layers, facing to protect the pigment layers disassembling, separating wooden frames reinforcing the wall layers, attaching supports to the wall layers, removing facing and making picture frames. They were conserved with emphasis placed on reinforcing the peeled pigment layers and the weakened walls and on improving the structural problem of the exhibit frames.

The direction of this study lies in exploring a schematic proposal for a historical walk over an area called 'West Village' located inside the old city wall of Seoul. The case study area is comparable to the historic 'North Village,' including historical assets such as the Kyunghi Royal Palace and Sajik-dan. Moreover, it has spectacular scenic spots surrounding Mt. Inwang and Baegundong Stream, although this has now been paved over for use as a road. This village maintained its fame as a hub of art through the early 20th century. The comprehensive approach of this study ranges from the historical and cultural to the ecological and visual. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. A themed walk would commemorate the great leader of national independence, Baegbeom Kim Ku, as well as the famous Korean style realistic landscape painting school under the leadership of Kyumjae Jeong Seon, a great artist of the Josun Dynasty. In addition, a scenic streamside walk would accentuate the surrounding panoramic vistas which were drawn by Kyumjae, while at the same time allowing the ecological system of Baegundong Stream to be uncovered and restored.
