  • Cold formed steel shear panel is one of the main components to bearing lateral load in low and mid-rise cold formed steel structures. This paper uses finite element analysis to evaluate the stiffness, strength and failure mode at cold formed steel shear panels whit steel sheathing and nonlinear connections that are under monotonic loading. Two finite element models based on two experimental model whit different failure modes is constructed and verified. It includes analytical studies that investigate the effects of studs and steel sheathing thickness changes, fasteners spacing at panel edges, one or two sides steel sheathing and height-width ratio of wall on the lateral load capacity. Dominant failure modes include buckling of steel sheet, local buckling in boundary studs and sheet unzipping in the bottom half of the wall.

  • This study suggested shear strength prediction model for retrofitted single-layered RC squat wall by providing column element as additional boundary element. This model revised existing shear strength prediction model of shear wall to consider detail and shear deformation capacity of column by assuming the length that concentrated shear deformation of the column is occurred. It was able to suggest additional compatibility condition related to shear strain of retrofitted of retrofitted shear wall at the ultimate state by using this length. Therefore, this study proposed a flow chart for predicting shear strength of the retrofitted shear wall considering this additional condition. Moreover, this study also proposed a method for predicting initial stiffness of the retrofitted shear wall by transforming the wall's resisting mechanism against to lateral load to a single diagonal strut mechanism. The proposed methods can predict shear strength and initial stiffness of not only the retrofitted shear wall of this study, also infilled RC shear wall in RC frame.

  • Failure of a pipeline due to local wall thinning is getting more attention in the nuclear power plant industry. Although guidelines such as ANSI/ASME B31G and ASME Code Case N597 are still useful fer assessing the integrity of a wall thinned pipeline, there are some limitations in these guidelines. For instance, these guidelines consider only pressure loading and thus neglect bending loading. However, most Pipelines in nuclear power plants are subjected to internal pressure and bending moment due to dead-weight loads and seismic loads. Therefore, an assessment procedure for locally wall thinned pipeline subjected to combined loading is needed. In this paper, three-dimensional finite element(FE) analyses were performed to simulate full-scale pipe tests conducted for various shapes of wall thinned area under internal pressure and bending moment. Maximum moments based on true ultimate stress(${\alpha}$$\sub$u,t/) were obtained from FE results to predict the failure of the pipe. These results were compared with test results, which showed good agreement. Additional finite element analyses were performed to investigate the effect of key parameters, such as wall thinned depth, wall thinned angle and wall thinned length, on maximum moment. Also, the effect of internal pressure on maximum moment was investigated. Change of internal pressure did not show significant effect on the maximum moment.

  • Recently, the scale in the field of reinforced soil retaining wall has been grown up like tiered reinforced soil retaining wall. However, there have been increasing number of collapse accidents and large scale of collapse. The design manual adopted in the construction fields have been inconsistent in tiered reinforced soil retaining wall. Therefore, this study performed finite element analysis on 90 cases and analyzed characteristic behavior of lower wall which was one of the effect factors on the stability of tiered reinforced soil retaining wall. The facing displacement of each walls and the behavior of the whole ground were interpreted by the numerical analysis depending on the lower offset distance by the upper wall as well as the upper offset distance by the surcharge load. The results showed that the behavior of tiered reinforced soil retaining wall was differed by condition of surcharge load and each offset distance was found to be important factor.

  • In this paper, a numerical study using finite element method with considering soil-structure interaction was conducted to investigate the stress and deformation behavior of a sheet pile wall structure. In numerical model, one of the nonlinear elastic material constitutive models, Duncan-Chang E-v model, is used for describing soil behavior. The hard contact constitutive model is used for simulating the behavior of interface between the sheet pile wall and soil. The construction process of excavation and backfill is simulated by the way of step loading. We also compare the present numerical method with the in-situ test results for verifying the numerical methods. The numerical analysis showed that the soil excavation in the lock chamber has a huge effect on the wall deflection and stress, pile deflection, and anchor force. With the increase of distance between anchored bars, the maximum wall deflection and anchor force increase, while the maximum wall stress decreases. At a low elevation of anchored bar, the maximum wall bending moment decreases, but the maximum wall deflection, pile deflection, and anchor force both increase. The construction procedure with first excavation and then backfill is quite favorable for decreasing pile deflection, wall deflection and stress, and anchor forces.

  • Steel systems composed of Reinforced Concrete column to Steel beam connection (RCS) have been raised as a structural system in the past few years. The optimized combination of steel-concrete structural elements has the advantages of both systems. Through beam and through column connections are two main categories in RCS systems. This study includes finite-element analyses of mentioned connection to investigate the seismic performance of RCS connections. The finite element model using ABAQUS software has been verified with experimental results of a through beam type connection tested in Taiwan in 2005. According to verified finite element model a parametric study has been carried out on five RCS frames with different types of lateral restraint system. The main objective of this study is to investigate the forming of plastic hinges, distribution of stresses, ductility and stiffness of these models. The results of current research showed good performance of composite systems including concrete column-steel beam in combination with steel shear wall and bracing system, are very desirable. The results show that the linear stiffness of models with X bracing and steel shear wall increase remarkably and their ultimate strength increase about three times rather than other RCS frames.

  • Segmental Retaining Wall(SRW) has been variously applying in Civil and Architecture construction. Recently, the application of environmental element in all type's structures came to essential requirement, and the construction cases of retaining wall using reinforced soil and block are more increased than the past. But, this trend more widely was spread environmental element as landscape work for the backside of reinforced retaining wall as well as block itself. New environmental block, Greenstone Block, developed to apply of this tendency. The retaining wall system using Greenstone can be environmental constructing at both block itself and backside of retaining wall. The material tests, the axial compressive strength test of block and bending test of fiber-pipe, exercised to design and construction of vertical SRW, which were satisfied NCMA standard. Through this procedure, Rewall (ver 1.0) was developed, which can be automation design of SRW including internal stability, external stability and local stability. And these can be considered setback of retaining wall, as well the examples of vertical retaining wall using block presented to satisfying the follows; strength of reinforced geotextile, height of retaining wall, surcharge, types of backfill and groundwater level etc. Many problems investigated on after or before of construction were due to local failure, insufficiency of bearing capacity and groundwater level. Especially, the local failure was many occurred to during compaction or after construction, and the cases of SRW construction is similar to the results of model test on vertical SRW.

  • Mechanical and thermal properties of composite sandwich wall panels are affected by changes in their external environment. Humidity and temperature changes induce stress on wall panels and their core connectors. Under the action of ambient temperature, temperature on the outer layer of the wall panel changes greatly, while that on the inner layer only changes slightly. As a result, stress concentration exists at the intersection of the connector and the wall blade. In this paper, temperature field and stress field distribution of UHPC-RW-RC (Ultra-High Performance Concrete - Rock Wool - Reinforced Concrete) wall panel under high temperature-sprinkling and heating-freezing conditions were investigated by using the general finite element software ABAQUS. Additionally, design of the connection between the wall panel and the main structure is proposed. Findings may serve as a scientific reference for design of high performance composite sandwich wall panels.
