This paper is concerned with effects of the wall flexibility on the seismic behavior of ground-supported cylindrical silos. It is a well-known fact that almost all analytical approximations in the literature to determine the dynamic pressure stemming from the bulk material assume silo structure as rigid. However, it is expected that the horizontal dynamic material pressures can be modified due to varying horizontal extensional stiffness of the bulk material which depends on the wall stiffness. In this study, finite element analyses were performed for six different slenderness ratios according to both rigid and flexible wall approximations. A three dimensional numerical model, taking into account bulk material-silo wall interaction, constituted by ANSYS commercial program was used. The findings obtained from the numerical analyses were discussed comparatively for rigid and flexible wall approximations in terms of the dynamic material pressure, equivalent base shear and bending moment. The numerical results clearly show that the wall flexibility may significantly affects the characteristics behavior of the reinforced concrete (RC) cylindrical silos and magnitudes of the responses under strong ground motions.
Construction of sheet pile retaining walls in urban and coastal regions has resulted in sheet pile walls in close proximity to laterally loaded pile foundations. However, there is currently little information available in the literature to assist engineers for quantifying the response of sheet pile walls. This study provides a quantitative method for estimating sheet pile wall response due to loads imposed from a nearby laterally loaded pile. Three dimensional finite element analyses using commercial software, ABAQUS, were performed to assess the response of a sheet pile wall and nearby laterally loaded pile. The soils were modeled using Drucker-Prager constitutive model with associated flow rule, and the sheet pile wall and pile foundation were assumed to behave linear elastic. Four parameters were investigated: sheet pile wall bending stiffness, distance from the pile face to the wall, excavation depth in front of the sheet pile wall, and elastic modulus of the soil. Results from the analyses have been used to develop preliminary design charts and simple equations for estimating the maximum horizontal displacement and maximum bending moment in the sheet pile wall.

This paper presents the details of studies conducted on hollow concrete block masonry (HCBM) units and wall panels. This study includes, compressive strength of unit block, ungrouted and grouted HCB prisms, flexural strength evaluation, testing of HCBM panels with and without opening. Non-linear finite element (FE) analysis of HCBM panels with and without opening has been carried out by simulating the actual test conditions. Constant vertical load is applied on the top of the wall panel and then lateral load is applied in incremental manner. The in-plane deformation is recorded under each incremental lateral load. Displacement ductility factors and response reduction factors have been evaluated based on experimental results. From the study, it is observed that fully grouted and partially reinforced HCBM panel without opening performed well compared to other types of wall panels in lateral load resistance and displacement ductility. In all the wall panels, shear cracks originated at loading point and moved towards the compression toe of the wall. The force reduction factor of a wall panel with opening is much less when compared with fully reinforced wall panel with no opening. The displacement values obtained by non-linear FE analysis are found to be in good agreement with the corresponding experimental values. The influence of mortar joint has been included in the stress-strain behaviour as a monolith with HCBM and not considered separately. The derived response reduction factors will be useful for the design of reinforced HCBM wall panels subjected to lateral forces generated due to earthquakes.
The behavior of shear-wall dominant, low-rise, multistory reinforced concrete building structures is investigated. Because there are no beams or columns and the slab and wall thicknesses are approximately equal, available codes give little information relative to design for gravity and lateral loads. Items which effect the analysis of shear-wall dominant building structures, i.e., material nonlinearity including rotating crack capability, 3-D behavior, slab-wall interaction, floor flexibilities, stress concentrations around openings, the location and the amount of main discrete reinforcement are investigated. For this purpose 2 and 5 story building structures are modelled. To see the importance of 3-D modelling, the same structures are modelled by both 2-D and 3-D models. Loads are applied first the vertical then lateral loads which are static equivalent earthquake loads. The 3-D models of the structures are loaded in both in the longitudinal and transverse directions. A nonlinear isoparametric plate element with arbitrarily places edge nodes is adapted in order to consider the amount and location of the main reinforcement. Finally the importance of 3-D effects including the T-C coupling between walls are indicated.

In order to assess the integrity of pipes with local thinning area, the plastic strain as well as the elastic strain at the root of thinned region are required particularly when fluctuating load is applied to the pipe. For estimating elastic-plastic strain at local wall thinning area in a straight pipe under tensile load, an estimation model with idealized fully circumferential constant depth wall thinning area is proposed. Based on the compatibility and equilibrium equations a nonlinear estimation equation, from which local elastic-plastic strain can be determined as a function of pipe/defect geometry, material and the applied strain was derived. Estimation results are compared with those from detailed elastic-plastic finite element analysis, which shows good agreements. Noting that practical wall thinning in nuclear piping has not only a circular shape but also a finite circumferential length, the proposed solution for the ideal geometry is extended based on two-dimensional and three-dimensional numerical analysis of pipes with circular wall thinning.
Flow through compliant tubes with linear taper in wall thickness is numerically simulated by finite element analysis. Two models are examined: a planar two-dimensional channel, and an axisymmetric tube. For verification of the numerical method, flow through a compliant stenotic vessel is simulated and compared to existing experimental data. Computational results for an axisymmetric tube show that as cross-sectional area falls with a reduction in downstream pressure, flow rate increases and reaches a maximum when the speed index (mean velocity divided by wave speed) is near unity at the point of minimum cross-section area, indicative of wave speed flow limitation or "choking" (flow speed equals wave speed) in previous one-dimensional studies. For further reductions in downstream pressure, flow rate decreases. Cross-sectional narrowing is significant but localized. When the ratio of downstream-to-upstream wall thickness is ${\le}$ 2 the area throat is located near the downstream end; as wall taper is increased to ${\ge}$ 3 the constriction moves to the upstream end of the tube. In the planar two-dimensional channel, area reduction and flow limitation are also observed when outlet pressure is decreased. In contrast to the axisymmetric case, however, the elastic wall in the two-dimensional channel forms a smooth concave surface with the area throat located near the mid-point of the elastic wall. Though flow rate reaches a maximum and then falls, the flow does not appear to be choked.

In this study, we proposed a method to replace the solid finite element model of the boiler membrane wall for coal-fired power plants using an equivalent shell model. The application of a bending load to the membrane wall creates greater displacement at both ends of the central portion when compared with the middle when an isotropic elastic constant is used in the shell model. This is inconsistent with the results of the solid model where the central portion is uniformly deformed. Here, we presented a method to determine the orthotropic elastic constants of the shell model in terms of bending stiffness and vibration characteristics to solve this problem. Our analysis of the orthotropic shell model showed that the error ratio was 0.9% for the maximum displacement due to the bending load, 0.3% for the first natural frequency, and 2.5% for the second natural frequency when compared with the solid model. In conclusion, a complicated boiler membrane wall composed of a large number of pipes and fins can be replaced with a simple shell model that shows equivalent bending stiffness and vibration characteristics using our proposed method.

This paper presents plastic limit loads and approximate J estimates for axial through-wall cracked pipe bends under internal pressure and in-plane bending. Geometric variables associated with a crack and pipe bend are systematically varied, and three possible crack locations (intrados, extrados and crown) in pipe bends are considered. Based on small strain finite element limit analyses using elastic-perfectly plastic materials, effect of bend and crack geometries on plastic limit loads for axial through-wall cracked pipe bends under internal pressure and in-plane bending are quantified, and closed-form limit solutions are given. Based on proposed limit load solutions, a J estimation scheme for axial through-wall cracked pipe bends under internal pressure and in-plane bending is proposed based on reference stress approach.

This study aims to develop the program for design of a reinforced earth retaining wall. For this purpose, the external stability such as overturning, sliding and bearing capacity and the internal stability such as pull-out failure and tensile rupture of the reinforced earth retaining wall with the reinforcement spacing and the backfill inclination were examined. In addition, the calculated results from the developed program were verified by comparing with the simulated results based on the three-dimensional finite element analysis. It is expected that this program contributes to effective design of the reinforced earth retaining wall.

Wall-thinned defects caused by accelerated corrosion due to fluid flow in the inner pipe appear in many structures of the secondary systems in nuclear power plants (NPPs) and are a major factor in degrading the integrity of pipes. Wall-thinned defects need to be managed not only when the NPP is under maintenance but also when the NPP is in normal operation. To this end, a test technique was developed in this study to detect such wall-thinned defects based on the temperature difference on the surface of a hot pipe using infrared (IR) thermography and a cooling device. Finite element analysis (FEA) was conducted to examine the tendency and experimental conditions for the cooling experiment. Based on the FEA results, the equipment was configured before the cooling experiment was conducted. The IR camera was then used to detect defects in the inner pipe of the pipe specimen that had artificially induced defects. The IR thermography developed in this study is expected to help resolve the issues related to the limitations of non-destructive inspection techniques that are currently conducted for NPP secondary systems and is expected to be very useful on the NPPs site.
