  • Flew control devices, such as flow liners, are frequently introduced in a cavitation tunnel in order to reduce the tunnel blockage effect, when a three-dimensional wake distribution is simulated using a complete ship model or a dummy model. In order to estimate the tunnel wall effect and to evaluate the effect of flow liners on the simulated wake distribution, a surface panel method is adopted for the calculation of the flow around a ship model and flow liners installed in a rectangular test section off cavitation tunnel. Calculation results on the Sydney Express ship model show that the tunnel wall effect on the hull surface pressure distribution is negligible for less than 5% blockage and can be appreciable for more than 20% blockage. The flow liners accelerate the flow near the afterbody of the ship model, so that the pressure gradient there becomes more favorable and accordingly the boundary layer thickness would be reduced. Since the resulting wake distribution is assumed to resemble the full scale wake, flow liners can also be used to simulate an estimated full scale wake without modifying the ship model. Boundary taper calculation should be incorporated in order to correlate the calculated wake distribution with the measured one.

  • Accurate simulation of wakeshapes behind a wing is important for the performance prediction of the aircraft and the wake hazard problem in the airport. In the present study, wakeshapes behind a wing inside tunnels are simulated in regard to the development of wing-in-ground effect vehicles. A discrete vortex method with a nonplanar ground modelling is used for the simulation. It was found that the wingtip vortices move toward outboard directions when the wing is in ground effect. When the wing is placed inside tunnels, the wingtip vortices move along the tunnel wall with counter clockwise direction. As the gap between the wingtip and the tunnel decreases, the wingtip vortices move further along the tunnel wall. Both vortices from bothsides of the wing will murge, which will be studied in future using a viscous computation.

  • The effect of wake on the performance and load of a downstream wind turbine on a floating platform is investigated with a computer simulation in this study. The floating platform consists of a square platform having a dimension of $200m{\times}200m$ with four 2 MW wind turbines installed. For the simulation, only two wind turbines in series with the wind direction were considered and the floating platform was assumed to be stationary due to its large size. Also, a commercial program based on multi-body dynamics and eddy viscosity wake model was used. It was found from simulation that the power from the downstream wind turbine could be reduced by more than 50% of the power from the upstream wind turbine. However, due to the increase in the turbulence intensity, the power is greater but more fluctuating than the power produced by a wind turbine experiencing the same wind speed without wake. Also, it was found that the load of the down stream wind turbine be comes lower than the load of the upstream wind turbine but higher than the load of a wind turbine experiencing the same wind speed without wake.

  • In this paper, the wakes behind a square cylinder were simulated using two kinds of different turbulence models for the eddy viscosity concept such as the zero- and the one-equation model in which the former is the mixing length model and the latter is the k-equation model. For comparison between numerical and analytical solutions, we employed three skill assessments: the correlation coefficient(r) for the similarity of the wake shape, the error of maximum velocity difference(EMVD) for the accuracy of wake velocity and the ratio of drag coefficient(RDC) for the pressure distribution around the structure. On the basis of the numerical results, the feasibility of each model for wake simulation was discussed and a suitable value for the empirical constant was suggested in these turbulence models. The zero-equation model, known as the simplest turbulence model, overestimated the EMVD and its absolute mean error(AME) for r, EMVD and RDC was ranging from 20.3 % to 56.3 % for all test. But the AME by the one-equation model was ranging from 3.4 % to 19.9 %. The predicted values of the one-equation model substantially agreed with the analytical solutions at the empirical mixing length scale $L=0.6b_{1/2}$ with the AME of 3.4 %. Therefore it was concluded that the one-equation model was suitable for the wake simulation behind a square cylinder when the empirical constant for eddy viscosity would be properly chosen.

  • In this study, we investigate the wake characteristics in laminar inflow and two different turbulent inflow cases. To solve the flow with wind turbines and its wake, we use large eddy simulation (LES) technique with actuator line method (ALM) and turbulent inflow of Turbsim. We perform the quantitative analysis of velocity deficit and turbulent intensity in laminar inflow case and turbulent inflow case with different turbulent intensity. In turbulent inflow, unsteady strong wake recovery which is highly fluctuated in time. Normalized power in turbulent inflow case is also highly fluctuated with unsteady wake recovery, while that in laminar inflow has quasi steady characteristic in power generation.

  • One of the most important factors in tall buildings design in urban spaces is wind. The present study aims to investigate the aerodynamic behavior in the square and triangular footprint forms through aerodynamic modifications including rounded corners, chamfered corners and recessed corners in order to reduce the length of tall buildings wake region. The method used was similar to wind tunnel numerical simulation conducted on 16 building models through Autodesk Flow Design 2014 software. The findings revealed that in order to design tall 50 story buildings with a height of about 150 meters, the model in triangular footprint with aerodynamic modification of chamfered corner facing wind direction came out to have the best aerodynamic behavior comparing the other models. In comparison to the related reference model (i.e., the triangular footprint with sharp corners and no aerodynamic modification), it could reduce the length of the wake region about 50% in general. Also, the model with square footprint and aerodynamic modification of chamfered corner with the corner facing the wind could present favorable aerodynamic behavior comparing the other models of the same cluster. In comparison to the related reference model (i.e., the square footprint with sharp corners and no aerodynamic modification), it could decrease the wake region up to 30% lengthwise.

  • In this paper, we propose an emergency wake-up alert system (EWAS) for providing accurate and rapid emergency information. The proposed system can provide an emergency wake-up alert service without an additional frequency allotment by utilizing the guard band of the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) Terrestrial Digital Television (DTV) system. The design target of the proposed system is to match the indoor reception coverage of EWAS with the outdoor reception coverage of the ATSC DTV system. To achieve this, the proposed system should be about 35.65 dB more robust than the ATSC DTV system. The simulation results show that the proposed system offers an emergency wake-up alert service supporting a data rate of up to 23 bps.

  • In this study, we investigate the wake characteristics in two cases which are laminar inflow and turbulent inflow. To solve the flow with wind turbines and its wake, we use large eddy simulation (LES) technique with actuator line method (ALM) and turbulent inflow of Turbsim. Turbulent inflow which contains the characteristic of the stable atmospheric boundary layer is used. We perform the quantitative analysis of velocity deficit and turbulence intensity in two cases. Time series of velocity deficit at the first, the second column in two cases are compared to observe the performance of wind turbine. The performance in the first column in laminar inflow is overestimated compared to that in turbulent inflow. And we observe that wake in the case with turbulent inflow drive to the span-wise direction and wake recovery in turbulent inflow is more effective. In quadrant analysis of Reynolds stress, the ejection and the sweep motion in turbulent inflow case are bigger than those in laminar inflow case.

  • Experimental and numerical investigations were conducted to identify the wake characteristics downstream of two vane-type vortex generators over laminar flat plate boundary layer. Experimental study was carried out by using the stereoscopic particle image velocimetry. To describe the flow field around the vortex generator in detail, numerical study was performed. We considered two different planform shapes of vortex generator: triangular and rectangular shape. The height of the generator was chosen to be about the boundary layer thickness at the position of its installation. Two different lengths of the generator were chosen: two and five times the height. Wake measurements were carried out at three angles of attack for each configuration. Wake characteristics for each case such as overall vortical structure, vorticity distribution, and location of vortex center with downstream distance were obtained from the PIV data. Wake characteristics, as expected, were found to vary strongly with the geometry and angle of attack so that no general tendency could be deduced. Causes of this irregular tendency were explained by using the results of the numerical simulation.
