Validation of the numerical simulations of flow around a scaled-down turbine using experimental data from wind tunnel

  • Aerodynamic characteristic of a small scale wind turbine under the influence of an incoming uniform wind field is studied using k-ω Shear Stress Transport turbulence model. Firstly, the lift and drag characteristics of the blade section consisting of S826 airfoil is studied using 2D simulations at a Reynolds number of 1×105. After that, the full turbine including the rotational effects of the blade is simulated using Multiple Reference Frames (MRF) and Sliding Mesh Interface (SMI) numerical techniques. The differences between the two techniques are quantified. It is then followed by a detailed comparison of the turbine's power/thrust output and the associated wake development at three tip speeds ratios (λ = 3, 6, 10). The phenomenon of blockage effect and spatial features of the flow are explained and linked to the turbines power output. Validation of wake profiles patterns at multiple locations downstream is also performed at each λ. The present work aims to evaluate the potential of the numerical methods in reproducing wind tunnel experimental results such that the method can be applied to full-scale turbines operating under realistic conditions in which observation data is scarce or lacking.

Aerodynamic Analysis of a Rectangular Wing in Flapping and Twisting Motion using Unsteady VLM (직사각형 평판 날개의 날개짓과 비틀림 운동에 대한 비정상 VLM 공력 해석)

  • The unsteady vortex lattice method is used to model twisting and flapping motions of a rectangular flat plate wing. The results for plunging and pitching motions were compared with the limited experimental results available and other numerical methods. They show that the method is capable of simulating many of the features of complex flapping flight. The lift, thrust and propulsive efficiency of a rectangular flat plate wing have been calculated for various twisting angles and reduced frequency with an amplitude of flapping angle($20^{\circ}$). And the effects of the twisting on the aerodynamic characteristics of the flapping wing are discussed by examination of their trends.

  • The influence of wake flow on a flat-plate blade having different shapes near the hailing edge has been investigated in this paper. Two different shapes near the trailing edge namely the pressure surface cutting (TP) and the suction surface cutting (TS) have been used. The calculation has been performed for two different angles of attack (a =10 and 15 degree) in both the cases. RANS equations have been solved using SST-model as a turbulence closure. Cp and CL values obtained for TS are higher compared to those obtained for TP. Also, the vorticity distribution obtained in case of TS is stronger as compared to that obtained in the case of TP The Karmann Vortex is observed in both the cases but it is more clear in TS case. It is found that in the case of TS, flow separation does not occur upto the trailing edge on both the suction and the pressure sides of the blade while in the case of TP, the flow separateson the pressure surface near the trailing edge of the flat-plate blade.

  • Numerical analysis using the FLUENT is performed for the 138K LNG carrier of the MOERI. In this study, results according to the number and also the type of the grid, different turbulent models, variations of y+ are compared with experiments and computational results from the WAVIS. RSM model gives good result in comparison with other models, and the more the number of grid increase, the better the resistance converges to the constant value. Additionally, it is confirmed that the resistance and wake distributions vary with the change of y+, and O-O type grid yields better wake distributions than that of O-H type. Average velocity distributions and velocity profiles are mainly in accord with experiments and computational results of the WAVIS, however, present results in the region of transom and tip of leading edge of the rudder are poor for the lower velocity components comparing with that of the WAVIS.

  • This study focuses on the Achard turbine, a vertical axis, cross-flow, marine current turbine module. Similar modules can be superposed to form towers. A marine or river hydropower farm consists of a cluster of barges, each gathering several parallel rows of towers, running in stabilized current. Two-dimensional numerical modelling is performed in a horizontal cross-section of all towers, using FLUENT and COMSOL Multiphysics. Numerical models validation with experimental results is performed through the velocity distribution, depicted by Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry, in the wake of the middle turbine within a farm model. As long as the numerical flow in the wake fits the experiments, the numerical results for the power coefficient (turbine efficiency) are trustworthy. The overall farm efficiency, with respect to the spatial arrangement of the towers, was depicted by 2D modelling of the unsteady flow inside the farm, using COMSOL Multiphysics. Rows of overlapping parallel towers ensure the increase of global efficiency of the farm.

On the domain size for the steady-state CFD modelling of a tall building

  • There have existed for a number of years good practice guidelines for the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) in the field of wind engineering. As part of those guidelines, details are given for the size of flow domain that should be used around a building of height, H. For low-rise buildings, the domain sizes produced by following the guidelines are reasonable and produce results that are largely free from blockage effects. However, when high-rise or tall buildings are considered, the domain size based solely on the building height produces very large domains. A large domain, in most cases, leads to a large cell count, with many of the cells in the grid being used up in regions far from the building/wake region. This paper challenges this domain size guidance by looking at the effects of changing the domain size around a tall building. The RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is used in a series of steady-state solutions where the only parameter varied is the domain size, with the mesh resolution in the building/wake region left unchanged. Comparisons between the velocity fields in the near-field of the building and pressure coefficients on the building are used to inform the assessment. The findings of the work for this case suggest that a domain of approximately 10% the volume of that suggested by the existing guidelines could be used with a loss in accuracy of less than 10%.

  • This paper describes a potential-based panel method for the prediction of steday performance of a marine propeller operating in a uniform oncoming flow. An integral equation with unknown dipole strengths is formulated by distributing the normal dipoles and/or sources on the blade and hub surfaces and the wake sheet, and is solved numerically upon discretization. A hyperboloidal panel has been adopted to compute the potential induced by a normal dipole on a non-planar quadrilateral panel. The Kutta condition is satisfied by iteratively annulling the pressure jumps at the trailing edge. Extensive convergence tests are carried out, and the influence of the wake model upon performance is studied. Predicted performance is shown to correlate well with the experiments.

  • The transient laminar reacting flows around fuel droplet have been numerically analyzed. The physical models used in this study can account for the variable thermophysical properties and the chemistry is represent by the one-step global reaction model. The present study is focused on the vaporization and ignition characteristics, flame structure including wake flame, transition flame and envelope flame, and interaction between droplets. special emphasis is given to the triple flame structure and flame stabilization.

  • This study was performed to investigate wake flow and unsteady flow characteristics using a model for actual shape of a wind breaker and visualization of flow through the particle image velocity. three control angle of flap were selected and instantaneous velocity distributions and flow characteristics were experimently investigated. It is found that as the control angle increase, the flows are characterized by the appearance of the growth of recirculation region.

  • When high speed train meets sidewind, folwfields around the train is very complex. In this case, the force by sidewind has a bad effect on stability of train. We can observe that the flow separates, reattaches, and forms all unsteady vortex in the wake region behind tile structure. Such folwfield can be analyzed by $\kappa$-$\omega$ SST model, and we investigate the effect for various section shape of high speed train. So we acquire the result that as tile corner of train section is rounder, stability of train is better.
