This paper proposes robust ship wake search method in the target evasion environment. Moving surface ships generate a long trailing wake in the rear of a surface ship. Wake homing torpedo sensing this wake can detect the surface target and engage it automatically. In wake homing torpedo, wake search method is important element to maximize effectiveness of wake homing torpedo. This paper proposes one-side, two-side and centering mode according to passing wake boundary scenarios. Also, wake deflection angle is deduced by using the principle of deflection angle of acoustic torpedo. The representative experimental results using monte-carlo simulation demonstrate that the searching method using one-side mode is superior to two-side and centering mode in the target evasion environment.

To evaluate the wake regions of six artificial reefs (ARs) frequently used in the marine forest creation project in Korea, we consider the effect of water flow directions on the wake regions and accordingly propose a wake region diagram, which is characterized by parameters such as wake volume fluctuations, averaged wake volume, fundamental symmetric angle, secure angle, and principal direction. To demonstrate the parameters, seven water flow directions (0 to $90^{\circ}$) were considered and consequently the variations in wake volumes were investigated by using the concept of wake volume, adopting element-based finite volume method, and utilizing numerical flow domain and boundary conditions. From the analysis results, it was shown that the wake region diagrams have a period of either 45 or $90^{\circ}$ according to the geometrical symmetry of each artificial reef. Also, it was found that the secure angle ranges fluctuate depending on the shapes and sizes of the artificial reefs considered. Thus, it is demanded to consider those parameters during installation of artificial reefs for establishing a larger wake region and accordingly attracting more marine fauna and flora in the region.

This paper describes effects of incidence angle on the wake turbulent flow of a high-turning turbine rotor blade. For three incidence angles of -5, 0 and 5 degrees, energy spectra as well as profiles of mean velocity magnitude and turbulence intensity at mid-span are reported in the wake. Vortex shedding fiequencies are obtained from the energy spectra. The result shows that as the incidence angle changes from -5 to 5 degrees, the suction-side wake tends to be widened and the deviation angle is increased. Strouhal numbers based on the shedding fiyequencies have a nearly constant value, regardless of the tested incidence angles.
A kinematics model of a ship wake in the presence of surface waves generated by wind is presented. It was found that a stationary wave structure behind a ship covered a wedge region with the angle at the top of the wake and that only divergent waves were present in a ship wake instead of both the longitudinal and cross-waves, which are known as the Kelvin model. Ship motion at some angle to wind waves can cause an essential asymmetry of the wake, compressing its windward half.
This paper describes the effect of the incidence angle on the turbulence structure in the wake of a turbine rotor blade at the low inlet free-stream turbulence level. For three incidence angles of -5, 0 and 5 degrees, mid-span energy spectrum as well as mid-span profiles of mean velocity magnitude and turbulence intensity are reported at three downstream locations in the wake. Vortex shedding frequencies are obtained from the energy spectrum. The result shows that as the incidence angle changes from-5 to 5 degrees, the boundary layer on the suction surface tends to be thickened, which results in widening of the wake. Strouhal numbers based on the shedding frequencies have a nearly constant value of 0.3, independent of tested incidence angles.

The wake geometries of a two-bladed rotor in axial flights using a time-marching free-wake method without a non-physical model of the far wake are calculated. The computed free-wake geometries of AH-1G model rotor in climb flight are compared with the experimental visualization results. The time-marching free-wake method can predict the behavior of the tip vortex and the wake roil-up phenomena with remarkable agreements. Tip vortices shed from the two-bladed rotor can interact with each other significantly. The interaction consists of a turn of the tip vortex from one blade rolling around the tip vortex from the other. Wake expansion of wake geometries in radial direction after the contraction is a result of adjacent tip vortices begging to pair together and spiral about each other. Detailed numerical results show regular pairing phenomenon in the climb flights, the hover at high angle of attack and slow descent flight too. On the contrary, unstable motions of wake are observed numerically in the hover at low angle of attack and fast descent flight. It is because of the inherent wake instability and blade-vortex-interaction rather then the effect of recirculation due to the experimental equipment.

The wake structure behind a van type vehicle was studied experimentally with a 5-hole yawhead probe. Through an effective calibration method of the 5-hole yawhead probe, the flow properties such as velocity vector, total pressure and static pressure were obtained on two cross sections within the wake. These results combined with the surface flow visualization performed in the previous study, yielded some information about the wake structure. When the model was placed in a stream with zero yaw angle, two counter rotating vortices were observed behind the model which pull down the surface flow on each side of the model. With increasing the yaw angle, the surface flow on the windward side changed to divide the flow in two directions, one flows upward on the upper part and the other flows downward on the lower part of the windward side. Hence a new weak vortex was created on the upper windward side, which resulted 3 vortices within the wake. The size and the strength of the vortices increased with yaw angle.
This work numerically investigates the effects of Reynolds number ReD (= 100 - 150), cross-sectional aspect ratio AR = ( 0.25 -1.0), and attack angle α (= 0° - 90°) on the forces, Strouhal number, and wake of an elliptical cylinder, where ReD is based on the freestream velocity and cylinder cross-section height normal to the freestream flow, AR is the ratio of the minor axis to the major axis of the elliptical cylinder, and α is the angle between the cylinder major axis and the incoming flow. At ReD = 100, two distinct wake structures are identified, namely 'Steady wake' (pattern I) and 'Karman wake followed by a steady wake (pattern II)' when AR and α are varied in the ranges specified. When ReD is increased to 150, an additional wake pattern, 'Karman wake followed by secondary wake (pattern III)' materializes. Pattern I is characterized by two steady bubbles forming behind the cylinder. Pattern II features Karman vortex street immediately behind the cylinder, with the vortex street transmuting to two steady shear layers downstream. Inflection angle αi = 32°, 37.5° and 45° are identified for AR = 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75, respectively, where the wake asymmetry is the greatest. The αi effectively distinguishes the dependence on α and AR of force and vortex shedding frequency at either ReD. In Pattern III, the Karman street forming behind the cylinder is modified to a secondary vortex street. At a given AR and α, ReD = 150 renders higher fluctuating lift and Strouhal number than ReD = 100.

In the present study, the flow fields in between the propeller and the semi-spade rudder are investigated by using PIV technique to find out the influences of both simulated hull wake and propeller wake on the incident flow to the rudder. The velocity fields are measured at the propeller rotation angle of $180^{\circ}$ and the rudder deflection angles of $0^{\circ}$. Flow fields measured at each rudder deflection angle are analyzed in terms of angle-of-attack against the rudder leading edge. The hull wake increases the angle-of-attack more than that in the uniform inflow condition, forming the angle-of-attack of about $20^{\circ}$ at 0.7R(R=propeller radius) position. The distribution of the angle-of-attack is strongly affected by the stagnation point around the leading edge and camber effect of the rudder. These effects provide asymmetric distribution of angle-of-attack with respect to the leading edge of the rudder.

The characteristics of the relationship between the evolution of propeller trailing vortex wake and skew angle are numerically examined based on four different five-blade David Taylor Model Basin (DTMB) model propellers with different skew angles. Numerical simulations are based on Reynolds-averaged Naviere-Stokes (RANS) equations combined with SST $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model. Results show that the contraction of propeller trailing vortex wake can be restrained by increasing skew angle and loading conditions, and root vortices fade away when the propeller skew angle increases. With the increase of the propeller's skew angle, the deformation of the hub vortex and destabilization of the tip vortices are weakening gradually because the blade-to-blade interaction becomes weaker. The transition trailing vortex wake from stability to instability is restrained when the skew increases. Furthermore, analyses of tip vortice trajectories show that the increasing skew can reduce the difference in trailing vortex wake contraction under different loading conditions.
