  • Trace elements in airborne particulates were analyzed by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) under the optimum analytical condition. Neutron irradiation for sample was done at the irradiation hole(neutron flux 1$\times$10$^{13}$ n/$\textrm{cm}^2$.s) of TRIGA MARK-III research reactor in the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. For the verification of the analytical method, NIST SRM-1648 and NIES CRM No.8 ore chosen and analyzed. The accuracy and precision of the analysis of 40 and 24 trace elements in the samples were compared with the certified and reported values, respectively. The analytical method was found to be reliable enough when the analytical data of NIES sample were compared with those of different counties. In the analytical result of two or both of standard reference materials, relative standard deviation wes within the 15% except a few elements and the relative error was within the 10%. We used this method to analyze 30 trace elements in airborne particulates collected with the high volume air sampler(PM-10) at too different locations and also confirmed the possibility to use this method as a routine monitoring tool to find out environmental pollution sources.

  • Direct Containment Heating, DCH, is supposed to occur during a core melt-down accident if the primary system pressure is still high at the time of vessel breach in a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). In this case, DCH is considered to be one of very important severe phenomena during postulated severe accident scenario because of the fast heat transfer rate to atmosphere and the sharp pressure increase in a containment. To reduce the effect of this DCH phenomena, the capture volume wes designed at Ulchin NPP units 3 and 4. But, the effect of this has not been studied extensively. This work consists of experimental and numerical analyses of the effects of capture volume in the cavity on DCH phenomena. The experimental model is a 1/30 scaled-down model of Ulchin NPP units 3 and 4. We used three types of capture volumes to investigate the effect of size. Numerical analysis using CONTAIN 1.2 is performed with the correlation for the dispersed fraction of molten corium from the cavity into the containment derived from the experimental data to examine the effect of capture volume on DCH phenomena in full scale of Ulchin NPP units 3 and 4.

  • Langmuir probe measurements of electron density, electron temperature and potential are mad in the early stage (<5${\mu}$s) of a laser ablated plasma plume, in which a positive current form positive ions and a electron current are overlapped. The plasma wes produced by focusing the second harmonic, 532 nm, of Q-switched Nd:YAG laser on a high purity carbon target. Then the laser intensity on the target of ~1.6${\times}$10$\^$15/ W/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The measured electron desities and temperatures are ~2${\times}$10/sip 11/ cm$\^$-3/ and -3 eV. In particluar , the phenomenon that the electron temperature decreased and then increased was observed,. It could be well explained that this phenomenon occurred in the process of inverse Bremsstrahlung of free electrons in plasma. Additionally, the plasma potential(>11V) was higher than the published values.

  • Inherited metabolic disorders (IMD) are a group of disorders involving various metabolic pathways. Genetic diagnosis of IMD has been challenging because of extremely heterogeneous nature and extensive laboratory and/or phenotype overlap. Conventional genetic diagnosis was a gene-by-gene approach that needs a priori information on the causative genes that might underlie the IMD. Recent implementation of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies has changed the process of genetic diagnosis from a gene-by-gene approach to simultaneous analysis of targeted genes possibly associated with the IMD using gene panels or using whole exome/genome sequencing (WES/WGS) covering entire human genes. Clinical NGS tests can be a cost-effective approach for the rapid diagnosis of IMD with genetic heterogeneity and are becoming standard diagnostic procedures.

  • Objective : Five most generally adopting basic oriental prescriptions (yookmijihwangtang, ojeoksan, sipjeondaebotang, samultang, bojoongikgitang) samples were collected from 10 oriental hospitals nationwide and the transferring ratio to aqueous phase (TRAP) were calculated. Method : The samples are grounded evenly and the decocted at $120^{\circ}C$ for 12 min on hot plate and then filtered. The concentrations of As, Cd, Co, Cr and Pb in before and after decoction were measure by ICP/MS and the TRAPs were calculated. Results : The concentrations of As, Cr and Pb in the ground samples before decoction were all below criteria level, and TRAP values were also very low (<10%). For Cd, although some ground samples before decoction showed relatively high concentration level compare to the criteria level, because of their low TRAP (~3%), the actual concentrations in the decoction were quite low compare the criteria level. The Co's concentrations in the ground samples before decoction were all relatively low level. However, the TRAP of Co was astonishingly high value of around 40% average. Conclusion : The toxic heavy metal concentrations in the decoction were very low compare to the criteria level. The TRAPs are less than <10% except Co. The toxic heavy metals in the prescriptions are mainly remained in the residue and the only very small fraction may transferred to the decoctions. Therefore the toxicity of the oriental herbal medicine about the toxic heavy metal may be overstressed. The Co's TRAP turned out to be quite high value (40% average). Since the criteria level wes not established yet, the safety of decoctions according to Co was not fully confirmed.

  • Vivienne Westwood, the revolutionary cre-ator of Punk fashion(ripped T-shirts, bondage clothes, fetishist accoutrements) was a street fashion designer. Although Westwood's clothes have frequently been described as decadent, degenerate and unwearable, they have also exerted a powerful influence on interntional fashion. Westwood became a fashion designer in the mid-1970s, when he emergence of Punk put London back on the fashion map for the first time since 1965. Just as the Mods, Rockers, and Hippies of the 1960s had embraced par-ticular styles of dress and music, so also did the Punks create their own subculture. The Punk“style in revolt”was a deliberately“re-volting style”that incorporated into fashion various offensive or threatening objects like tampons, razor blades, and lavatory chains. Vivienne Westwood and parter Malcolm McLaren articulated this youth culture, who roots lay in music. A sign is something which stands for some object or idea, while the semiotics are the ex-ternal expression for an internal meaning. Semiotics can be used as a medium of communication between dress and music. A language is simply used for explicit of meaning, while the style of dress and music express the explicative and implicative signs. Peirce's scheme among several theories of the semiotics was chosen for this study, because the Peirce's scheme was the first non-language communication medium between external and internal stages, and readily inter-preted the styles of dress and music. Punk rock was studied at first to identify the style which influenced Vivienne Westwood's works and then Semiotics were used to apply the above results to the 1970s and 1990s for analyzing and interpreting the Vivienne Westwood's works were also interpreted by the symbolic characteristics of Semiotics, because the symbol of semiotics often found at Youth Cults reflected punk rock. The symbol of revolt, decadence, grungy, freedom in Vivienne Wes-twood's works wre determined by using Punk rock's semiotics. This study could conclude that the style of dress and punk rock were able to be interpreted by semiotics.

  • Background: Inadequate samples make laboratory tests delay cause errors, which will deteriorate the quality of the tests. Therefore, adequate samples are essential for reliable test result. To reduce the inadequate samples, they should to analyze problems and seek a way of improvement through CQI (Continuous Quality Improvement) activity. This will minimize errors during the test and produce a fast and accurate result. Eventrally, the qualily of entire test may be improved, and as a result, a good quality of medical care service may be provided. Methods: At first, inappropriate testing items were collected. Then, generating fctors and problems were investigated and analyzed in each case, In addition, the category with higher frequency wes primarily supervised. In consegalnce, a reduction of are dustion of improper testing sample was oxpected through continuous education and CQI activity. Conclusion : At the beginning of CQI activitv, the number of inadequate testing sample was of 8,591 total samples, which gives the frequency of 0.72%. As CQI activity was carried out the number of improper testing sample reduced to 58 out of 11,415 cases, which yields the frequency of 0,51%. One may notice the difference 0.2%. Among the inadequate sample(blood), there was a high frequency of hemolysis; thus, more of CQI activity is required for this specific matter. Because the occurrence of inadequate testing affects the clinical outcomes, it is extremely important that one manages each step of the procedure in collecting samples and mamtaines the quality of entire tests.

  • Transmission mechanisms that include an available bandwidth estimation algorithm and a packet loss differentiation scheme, in general, exhibit higher TCP performance in wireless networks. TCP New Jersey, known as the best existing scheme in terms of goodput, improves wireless TCP performance using the available bandwidth estimation at the sender and the congestion warning at intermediate routers. Although TCP New Jersey achieves 17% and 85% improvements in goodput over TCP Westwood and TCP Reno, respectively, we further improve TCP New Jersey by exploring improved available bandwidth estimation, retransmission timeout, and recovery mechanisms. Hence, we propose TCP New Jersey PLUS (shortly TCP NJ+), showing that under 1% packet loss rate, it outperforms 3% by TCP New Jersey and 5% by TCP Wes1wood. In 5% packet loss rate, a characteristic of high bit-error-rate wireless network, it outperforms other TCP variants by 19% to 104% in terms of goodput even when the network is in bi-directional congestion.

  • Consumption of chicken feet has been increasing recently, thus it was necessary to produce good quality of bone less chicken feet. In the process of bone removal during chicken feet production, feeding, conveying, cutting and bone removing process takes about 90% of overall labor. Therefore, the development of a chicken feet-bone remover was necessary to reduce the cost of labor. The main objective of this study was to make and test of chicken feet-bone remover. The optimum vibration level of feeder wes 8, and the optimum conveyor speed was 3.6 m/min. The feeding speed of feeder were 0.18 m/s, 0.13 m/s and 0.19 m/s for the weight ranges of chicken feet of >20 g, 20~30 g and 30 g< respectively. The sensing success rates of chicken feet were 100%, 98% and 96% for the conveyor speeds of 3.0, 3.6 and 4.2 m/min respectively. The slips of chicken feet were 1.0 mm, 1.9 mm and 3.2 mm for conveyor speed of 0.8, 1.9 and 4.2 m/min respectively, with the average moisture content of 65% (w.b). The incision accuracy rates of the chicken leg were 46%, 95%, 97% for the size ranges of >15 mm, 15~18 mm, 18 mm< respectively with the velocity of cutting blade 3.9 m/s. The removal rates of the chicken feet bone were 98%, 96%, 88% for toes diameter >10 mm, 10~15 mm, 15 mm> respectively with the velocity of cutting blade 11.8 m/s.
