  • Nowadays the amount of data obtained from advanced weather radars is growing to provide higher spatio-temporal resolution. Accordingly radar data compression is important to use limited network bandwidth and storage effectively. In this paper, we proposed a hierarchical compression method for weather radar data having high spatio-temporal resolution. The method is applied to radar reflectivity and evaluated in aspects of accuracy of quantitative rainfall intensity. The technique provides three compression levels from only 1 compressed stream for three radar user groups-signal processor, quality controller, weather analyst. Experimental results show that the method has maximum 13% and minimum 33% of compression rates, and outperforms 25% higher than general compression technique such as gzip.

  • Given the presence of global warming, the economic impact of climate changes on output sales has been discussed in the literature, but rarely with empirical evidences. In this present study, a simple log-model was employed to identify the economic impacts of weather changes in manufacturing and service sectors in Korea. For this empirical exercise, weather variables including the CDD (cooling degree days) and HDD (heating degree days) were computed using the Korea's meteorological records covering the period 1970-2012. According to estimation results, 26.7% (144 over 539) and 27.9% (64 over 229) of the manufacturing and service sectors, respectively, are found to be weather-sensitive.

  • A revolution in weather and climate forecasting is in progress. This has been made possible as a result of theoretical advances in our understanding of the predictability of weather and climate, and by the extraordinary developments in supercomputer technology. New problem areas have been discovered and different solutions have been found by the recent high performance computers whose performance has been increased rapidly. Such advances in the computational performance may change the strategy of development of numerical models and prediction methods. This paper discusses a brief history and current status of the supercomputers in institutions for research and forecast of weather/climate. The main purpose of this study is to provide the preliminary information about supercomputers such as architecture of system and processor. Such information would be useful for meteorologists to understand the features and the preference of supercomputers in each institution.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyse the accuracy of weather forecasts of temperature, precipitation probability , and sky condition and to evaluate the applicability of weather forecasts for the estimation of potential evapotranspiration for irrigation scheduling. Five weather station s were selected to compare forecasted and measured climatcal data. The error between forecasted and measured temperature was calculated and discussed. The accuracy of temperature forecast using relative frequency of the error was calculated . The temperature forecasting showed considerably high accuracy. Average sunshine hours for forecasted sky conditions were calculated and showed reasonable quality. From the reliability graphs, the forecasting precipation probabililty was reliable. Potential evapotranspirations were calculated and compared using forecast and measured temperatures. The weather forecast is considered usable for irrigation scheculing.

  • In this research the 2009 spring occurred during forest fire ImSil and research destination GyeongJu has been selected. Research in the field of the target time exploratory Boundary Data through after air photos, satellite photos and topographic map by using the combustion area was calculated. 2009 March 1-forest fire occurs on the day of the weather information and weather changes wildfire in the check in any affected. Study research destination of combustion is ImSil 161 ha, GyeongJu 270.93 ha. The impact of the weather-temperature dry weather forest fires this favorable situation to occur and the wind directions and the spread of the mountain wind speed was less impact has no arguments.

  • It is very essential to remove a strong ground clutter and moving clutter for an extraction of accurate information from a Doppler weather radar. Therefore, this paper proposed the use of an adaptive array antenna to overcome the shortages of a conventional weather radar. In the first, a simulation method was suggested for the generation of clutter and weather signals. Using these data, the performance of a weather radar was analyzed under various conditions. It is shown that the quality of pulse-pair estimates was greatly improved from the simulation results.

  • This study investigates the temperature history of slab mock-up specimens for hot weather concreting applying various surface insulating methods, in order to improve concrete quality at hot weather condition. Test showed that the use of insulating blanket or a bubble sheet on upper section of slab prevented from abrupt increase of temperature and vaporization of moisture during early curing at hot weather circumstance. In addition, it secured higher strength at early age. Therefore it is concluded that concrete construction insulating with the bubble sheet will reduce the plastic and drying shrinkage as well as improve strength at early age, thus securing concrete duality.

  • This study deals with the traffic accidents by weather condition. The objectives are to comparatively analyze the characteristics, and to develop the models of traffic accidents by weather condition. In pursuing the above, this paper gives particular attentions to testing the differences between two groups, and developing the models(Poisson and negative binomial regression) using the data of domestic circular intersections. The main results are as follows. First, three Poisson models and one negative binomial models which were all statistically significant were developed using the number of accident and EPDO by the clear weather and other as the dependant variables. Second, the differences between two models were comparatively analyzed using the chosen variables. This paper might be expected to give some implications to traffic safety policy-making to reduce and prevent the traffic accidents in circular intersections.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the probable period of the planting work in consideration of weather factors. The impact degree of weather factors on the control of planting schedule was measured by the possible working days on the basis of weather condition. To establish the weather standard, the researcher analyzed the questionnaires on the manager of planting work and also the meteorological data for 10 years(1983-1992) in Seoul. The results are as follows; $\circled1$ The possible period of the planting work is from March 17 to May 18 Spring and from September 26 to December 15 in Autumn during a year. $\circled2$ The problem working days of the planting work(106-130) days per year) are less than the building construction days(174 days per year), because of handling the living material of plants, specially in summer and winter.

  • Weather-resistant coatings were prepared by mixing a synthesized mill-base and let-down silicone/acrylic resin in weight ratios of 4 : 6, 3 : 7, and 2 : 8. The weatherability of the prepared coatings was tested. The thermal stability, general physical properties, and weatherability of the films of the coatings were improved with silicone content. Among the three mixing ratios mentioned, the ratio of 2 : 8 was the most suitable for the preparation of weather-resistant Coatings. The coatings containing 30 wt% of silicone proved to be a high weather-resistant coating.
