W-band MMIC Low Noise Amplifier for Millimeter-wave Seeker using Tuner System (Tuner System을 이용한 밀리미터파 탐색기용 W-band MMIC 저잡음 증폭기)

  • In this paper, we developed the W-band MMIC low noise amplifier for the millimeter-wave seeker using the tuner system. The MHEMT devices for MMIC LNA exhibited DC characteristics with a drain current density of 692mA/mm, an extrinsic transconductance of 726mS/mm. The current gain cutoff frequency(fT) and maximum oscillation frequency($f_{max}$) were 195GHz and 305GHz, respectively. The fabricated W-band low noise amplifier represented S21 gain of 7.42dB at 94 GHz and noise figure of 2.8dB at 94.2 GHz.

  • Most solar photovoltaic (PV) modules frequently get shadowed, completely or partially, resulting in a reduction of PV generation. This paper presents and compares the results from simulations and experimental measurements of the power output from a single PV module under various shading conditions. The study was carried out with a 90 W PV module and a 250 W PV module. The shaded area was increased from 0 to 100% for both variable and constant irradiances to analyze the effect of fluctuations in the solar irradiance certain shading conditions. The effect of shading for irradiance levels from 100 to $900W/m^2$ was investigated. Results showed that for every $100W/m^2$ decrease in the solar irradiance level, the power output decreased by 9, 0.7 and 1.5 W at 0, 25 and 50% shading, respectively. For solar irradiance levels higher than $500W/m^2$, the temperature increased by 1.6, 2.7 and $1.1^{\circ}C$ at 0, 25 and 50% shading, respectively, for every $100W/m^2$ increase in the irradiance.

  • In order to design M/W(microwave) short backhaul above 10 GHz to meet the increase in mobile traffic demand, the rain attenuation as well as the atmospheric conditions such as Earth bulge and Fresnel zone should be considered. In this paper, the path lengths have been estimated theoretically in various frequency bands using the Korean standard rain rate, and an example of path profile has been analyzed in urban area utilizing spectrum management intelligence system (SMIS). These derived minimum path lengths in various frequency bands are compared to the foreign them, and then will be proposed to improve the Korean minimum path length unitized to 10 km. This paper will provide useful information for microwave engineers in designing a M/W access link, and be utilized to make an efficient usage of high frequency bands for the short mobile broadband backhaul.

Medium Composition of Enterobacter cloacae YJ-1 for Maximizing Hydrogen Production (수소생산 증진을 위한 Enterobacter cloacae YJ-1의 배지조성)

  • In order to maximize hydrogen production by Enterobacter cloacae YJ-1, anaerobic hydrogen producing bacteria, the medium composition was optimized. Glucose was better than other carbon sources in hydrogen production and its production was 975.4 mL/L at $2\%$ (w/v) for 48 h. Organic nitrogen sources were more effective than inorganic nitrogen sources and also yeast extract among organic nitrogens was the most effective in hydrogen production. Among metal ions, $Na_2MoO_4$ was most effective, and its production was 1753.3mL/L at $0.04\%$ (w/v). Addition of amino acid was very effective with compare to another components of medium, and cystein was most effective among them. Under the optimum medium obtained in batch culture, semi-batch culture in order to produce continuous hydrogen was run. The highest hydrogen production was earned at $3\%$(w/v) of glucose and the amount was 2215.4 mL/L.

Effect of cooling patches on performance of photovoltaic-thermoelectric hybrid energy devices (쿨링패치 부착에 따른 태양광-열전 융합소자의 성능 연구)

  • In this study, we examine the availability of a cooling patch to enhance the output power of a hybrid energy device (HED) comprising a photovoltaic cell (PVC) and a thermoelectric generator (TEG). The cooling patch attached on the back of the TEG drops the temperature of the PVC via the TEG and makes a large thermal gradient across the TEG under irradiances in a range of 200 to 1000 W/m2. The cooling patch is more effective for the output power of the HED as the irradiance increases, and it enhances the maximum output power of the HED to 42.1 mW at an irradiance of 1000 W/m2. The increment in the maximum output power reaches 27% owing to the attachment of the cooling patch that does not consume any power.

  • 북극 다산기지가 있는 니알슨 인근 해역인 Kongsfjorden만은 일부 해역이 해빙으로 덮혀 있는 반폐쇄적인 만으로 수심이 평균 200m 이상 된다. 이곳 북극 지방은 하절기 라도 태양의 고도가 낮아 해색위성분야의 극지활용에 대한 가능성 여부도 명확하게 알려져 있지 못하다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 북극 다산기지가 위치한 스발바드 군도의 니알슨 주변 해역(Kongsfjorden 해역)을 중심으로 2006년 8월 현장관측된 자료들을 유사한 시기의 한반도 주변 해역에서 현장관측된 자료들과 비교/분석하여 해양환경적 특성과 해수광학적인 특성이 어떤 차이가 있는지를 비교 분석하였다. 또한 북극 지방에서 인공위성을 이용한 해색위성자료의 극지활용이 가능한지를 검토하였다. 해수의 광 특성으로, 니알슨 주변 해역의 ${\alpha}^*_{ph}(440)$ 최대값은 $0.1m^2/mg$으로 한반도 주변해수의 ${\alpha}^*_{ph}(440)$ 최대값보다 약 2배정도 높게 측정되어 플랑크톤의 광 흡수효율이 중위도보다 상대적으로 높은 것으로 분석되었다. ${\alpha}^*_{ss}(440)$ 값은 $0.04-0.1m^2/g$으로 동중국해와 유사하며,한반도 주변해수보다 높은 값을 나타냈다. 이것은 Kongsfjorden 해역의 부유물질(SS) 구성성분이 동중국해와 유사한 무기광물 입자로 주로 구성되어 있음을 보여주고 있다. ${\alpha}_{dom}(400)$ 값은 $0.08-0.25m^{-1}$로 한반도 주변해수의 ${\alpha}_{dom}(400)$이 값과 유사하고 연안해역의 ${\alpha}_{dom}(400)$ 값보다 낮은 값을 나타냈다. $E_d(460)$의 평균값은 Konsfjorden 해역 $40mW/cm^2/{\mu}m$, 동중국해 $120mW/cm^2/{\mu}m$, 황해남부 $110mW/cm^2/{\mu}m$, 남해연안 $100mW/cm^2/{\mu}m$, 진해만 $100mW/cm^2/{\mu}m$이었다. 이와 같은 현장관측결과를 토대로 분석한 북극 다산기지 주변 해역의 해수광학적인 환경 특성은 용존유기물의 흡광도를 기준으로 볼 때 대양(Open Sea)의 광 특성과 유사하였다. 또한 북극지방에서 태양의 해수 입사 광량은 중위도의 약 40%정도이지만 해색위성자료의 극지활용이 가능하다고 판단되었다.

Combustion Chracteristics of the Pinus rigida and Castanea savita Dried at Room Temperature (실온에서 건조된 리기다 소나무와 밤나무의 연소특성)

  • One of the limitation of wood as building materials is its flammability. The purpose of this paper is to examine the combustion properties of the Pinus rigida and Castanea savita which are grown in Korea and meet the desirable characteristics for use of construction materials. The cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1) was used to determine the heat release rate (HRR) and fire smoke index, as well as CO and $CO_2$ production and smoke obscuration. The $HRR_{mean}$ of the Castanea savita and Pinus rigida at $50\;kW/m^2$ of radiant heat flux was $70.4\;kW/m^2$ and $68.5\;kW/m^2$. Furthermore, the THR of Castanea sativata was 120.8 MJ/kg and it was higher than the THR of Pinus rigida ($81.9\;MJ/m^$). These results are depend on the bulk density of tested wood species. The Castanea savita has high $CO_{mean}$ yield and high CO/$CO_2$ yield compared with that of Pinus rigida.

Numerical study of strength reduction-induced capillary rise effect for unsaturated soil

  • Previous studies postulated insignificant capillary rise (hc) effect above the water table (Hw) for unsaturated soils. In addition, these studies utilised dry unit weight above Hw. This paper, therefore, addresses the effect of these postulations on strength where the influence of hc using a modified upper bound approach, Discontinuity Layout Optimization (UNSAT-DLO) for a simulated soil was predicted. Two different parametric studies to model passive earth pressure and bearing capacity problems are carried out to provide an insight into the effect of capillary rise on strength. Significant increase in strength, owing to unsaturated conditions, was obtained where the maximum increase was when suction slightly less or greater than the air entry suction. On the other hand, the results showed a negative effect of hc. For example, up to 8.24% decrease in passive thrust (Pp) was obtained at Hw=0 m when hc rose 1 m from 0 m. To put this into perspective, this was equivalent to a decrease of about 2° in 𝜙 at Hw=0 m and hc =0 m in order to obtain the same result at hc =1 m. For the bearing capacity problem, the effect was seen to be higher, up to 18.4% decrease in N𝛾 was obtained when hc rose from 0 m to 2.5 m at Hw =0 m. In addition, the results revealed a negative influence of assigning dry unit weight above Hw or hc.. However, considerable increase in strength was obtained when unsaturated unit weight above hc was assigned.

Surface morphology and deuterium retention in W and W-HfC alloy exposed to high flux D plasma irradiation

  • In this work, pure W and W-0.5wt%HfC alloy (WHC05) were fabricated by sintering and hot-rolling following the same processing route. After exposing to a high flux deuterium plasma irradiation with the D+ flux to three fluences of 6.00 × 1024, 2.70 × 1025 and 7.02 × 1025 D/m2, the evolution of surface morphology, deuterium retention and hardening behaviors in pure W and WHC05 has been studied. The SEM results show the formation of D blisters on the irradiated area, and with the increase of D implantation, the size of these blisters increases from 200 ~ 500 nm (2.70 × 1025 D/m2) to 1 ~ 2 ㎛ (7.02 × 1025 D/m2) in WHC05 and from 1 ~ 2 ㎛ (2.70 × 1025 D/m2) to > 3 ㎛ (7.02 × 1025 D/m2) in pure W, respectively. A higher D retention and obvious hardening are observed in pure W than that of the WHC05 alloy, indicating an improve radiation resistance in WHC05 compared to pure W.

The Effect of Low-Intensity Pulsed Ultrasound on Fracture Healing in the Rabbit Model (토끼모델에서 저강도 맥동초음파가 골절치유에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this research was to determine the effects on the healing of fibular fractures in rabbits of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (50 $mW/cm^2$ and 500 $mW/cm^2$) applied for periods of 4, 14 and 24 days following fibular osteotomy. Thirty-six male Japanese white rabbits were randomly divided into three groups of twelve for three treatment protocols: (1) ultrasound treatment at intensities of 50 $mW/cm^2$ and 500 $mW/cm^2$ until the 4th day following fibular osteotomy, (2) ultrasound treatment at intensities of 50 $mW/cm^2$ and 500 $mW/cm^2$ until the 14th day following fibular osteotomy, and (3) ultrasound treatment at intensities of 50 $mW/cm^2$ and 500 $mW/cm^2$ until the 24th day following fibular osteotomy. The low-intensity pulsed ultrasound was applied to only one fibula of each rabbit (these served as the experimental group). The other fibula of each rabbit served as the control group. The selection of which fibula was to be treated was made randomly. The animals were sacrificed on the 4th, 14th and 24th day after the start of ultrasound treatments. Percent of trabecular bone area and fibular radiography were carried out to compare the degree of fibular bone healing. A microscope was also used to determine any histologic changes. For statistical differences in radiological changes due to length of treatment period (4, 14 and 24 days respectively), the Wilcoxon signed-ranks test was used to compare the experimental and control groups. For statistical differences in fracture healing due to differences in ultrasound intensity, radiological studies were compared using the Mann-Whitney Test. And, to compute percentage differences in areas of trabecular bone, Two-way analysis of variance (ultrasound intensity x each group) was used. Experiment results were as follows: 1. In animals sacrificed on the 4th day, no difference was found in the radiological studies of the fibulae in the experimental and control groups (p>.05). However, experimental groups showed more rapid bone repair than control group. 2. Both radiographic and percent of trabecular bone area studies showed significant differences in rabbits sacrificed after 14 days. Fracture healing was significantly increased in the experimental group (p<.05) 3. In the animals sacrificed on the 24th day, histologic study showed rapid bone repair but fibular radiologic studies did not show statistical differences between the two groups (p>.05). 4. On the 14th day, bone union on radiograph was significantly more rapid in the treatment group with pulsed ultrasound of 50 $mW/cm^2$ than the group with 500 $mW/cm^2$ (p<.05). Histologic studies showed that both the 14 and 24 days groups had more rapid bone repair in animals treated with 50 $mW/cm^2$ ultrasound intensity than those treated with 500 $mW/cm^2$ intensity. In conclusion, it has been shown that the low-intensity pulsed ultrasound has a positive effect on bone fracture healing in the early stage and the range of pulse ultrasound from 50 $mW/cm^2$ to 500 $mW/cm^2$ is effective for fracture healing. Further study is needed to investigate the influence of pulsed ultrasound on delayed union and non-union in bone fractures and also for the clinical use of low-intensity pulsed ultrasound for bone healing in humans.
