  • The investigations for mitigating wind-induced excitations of tall buildings have been carried out. The aerodynamic modification of a building shape changing the cross-section with height through tapering, which alters the flow pattern around the building, could reduce wind induced excitations of tall buildings. The fart that a tapered tall building might spread the vortex-shedding over a broad range of frequencies makes more effective for reducing acrosswind responses has been established. In this paper, to investigate the tapering effect for reducing wind-induced responses of a tapered tall building, high-frequency force-balance test was conducted. The six types of building models which have different taper ratio of 2.5%, 5%, 7.5%, 10%, 15% and one basic building model of a square cross-section were tested under the two typical boundary layers representing suburban and urban flow environment. The effect of wind direction was also considered.

  • A hybrid particle-mesh method as the combination between the Vortex-In-Cell (VIC) method and penalization method has been achieved in recent years. The VIC method, which is based on the vorticity-velocity formulation, offers particle-mesh algorithms to numerically simulate flows past a solid body. The penalization method is used to enforce boundary conditions at a body surface with a decoupling between body boundaries and computational grids. The main advantage of the hybrid particle-mesh method is an efficient implementation for solid boundaries of arbitrary complexity on Cartesian grids. However, a numerical simulation of flows in large domains is still not too easy. In this study, a multi-domain approach is thus proposed to further reduce computation cost and easily implement it. We validate the implementation by numerical simulations of an incompressible viscous flow around an impulsively started circular cylinder.

  • BACKGROUND: The mobile vortex wet scrubber was developed to remove the harmful chemicals from accidental releases. However, there was a disadvantage that it was limitedly used for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as toluene according to the physicochemical properties. This study compared the removal efficiencies of an improved mobile scrubber on toluene and ammonia by applying diverse adsorption and absorption methods. METHODS AND RESULTS: The removal efficiencies on harmful chemicals were examined using various adsorption and absorption methods of water vortex process (C), phosphoric acid-impregnated activated carbon adsorption (PCA), pH-controlled water (pH 2.5) vortex process absorption with sulfuric acid (SWA) after ammonia exposure, granular activated carbon adsorption (GCA), and activated carbon mat adsorption (CMA) after toluene exposure. As a result, the best removal efficiency was shown in the SWA for ammonia and GCA for toluene. Also, the SWA and GCA methods were compared with different concentration levels. In the case of ammonia exposure (5, 10 and 25%), there was no difference by concentration levels, and the concentration in the outlet gradually increased, with pH change from acid to base. In the case of toluene exposure (50, 75 and 100%), the outlet concentration was higher relative to the exposure concentration in the initial 10 min, but the outlet concentration was remained steady after 10 min. CONCLUSION: The newly improved mobile scrubber was also effective in removing VOCs through adsorption techniques (activated carbon, activated carbon fiber, carbon mat filter etc.), as well as removing acid-base harmful chemicals by neutralization reaction.

  • This paper describes the design of a full-spade twisted rudder section by using the genetic algorithm based on VLM(Vortex Lattice Method) and panel method. The developed propeller- rudder analysis program has been validated by comparing with experimental data. The developed code has been used for the design of a twisted full-spade rudder especially for finding out optimum section. The optimization has been firstly carried out by the genetic algorithm. The more detail variation of a rudder section has been also conducted by changing section profile in more detail to confirm the most optimum section profile. The developed new twisted rudder has been compared with existing twisted rudder by cavitation testing in the cavitation tunnel at MOERI. It is concluded that the developed twisted rudder has a lower cavity in comparison with existing twisted rudder. The verification of efficiency gain is expected to be carried out through self-propulsion tests in the near future.

  • Interactions between a propeller and vortex system contained in a ship stern flow is treated theoretically. A new formulation to determine the effective velocity distributions is developed, which may be immediately applicable to the design and analysis of compound propulsors under the influence of severe vortical cross-flows around ship stern. An axisymmetric shear flow is represented by a system of ring vortices and the axial variation of the stream lines due to the action of propeller is represented by a cubic function. The strengths of ring vortices, which are varying along the stream lines, are determined by the conservation of angular momentum. Two simplified effective velocity models are proposed to confirm the theory. Sample calculations using the simplified models are made to compare with the results by other investigators.

  • Active tab is one of the promising technology for the BVI (blade-vortex interaction) noise reduction, and analysis of noise reduction performance is very important phase of the technology development. For the purpose of analysing the performance of noise reduction using active tab, CAMRAD II model for a model-scale rotor system was constructed utilizing structural design result and airfoil aerodynamic data generated by CFD (computational fluid dynamics) calculation. HHC strategy was applied to descent flight condition and air-load was calculated by CAMRAD II then variations of BVI noise was calculated by in-house program. Calculation result with respect to tab length and control phase changes showed BVI noise could be reduced by -3.3dB.

  • An experimental study of the vortical flow over a yawed delta wing with leading edge extension(LEX) was conducted to investigate the effects of the existence of a centerbody configuration on the flow characteristics of the wing and LEX vortices using off-surface visualization and PIV measurements. The qualitative investigation using these two techniques indicated that the effect of the centerbody existence on the vortex formation was minimal at somewhat low range of angles of attack and sideslip angles. However, the quantitative analysis of the surface pressure measurements revealed the effect of centerbody existence to be prominently increased for the cases with higher angles of attack and sideslip angles. It was also found that the centerbody effect was not significant compared to the effect of sideslip for the present LEX-delta wing configuration.

  • The complicated flow characteristics of upper propeller wake influenced by hull wake are investigated in detail in the present study. A two-frame PIV (particle image velocimetry) technique was employed to visualize the upper propeller wake region. As the upper hull wake affects strongly propeller inflow, upper propeller wake shows much unstable vortical behavior, especially in the tip vortices. Velocity field measurements were conducted in a cavitation tunnel with a simulated hull wake. Generally, the hull wake generated by the hull of a marine ship may cause different loading distributions on the propeller blade in both upper and lower propeller planes. The unstable upper propeller wake caused by the ship's hull is expressed in terms of turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and is identified by using the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method to characterize the coherent flow structure in it. Instabilities appeared in the eigen functions higher than the second one, giving unsteadiness to the downstream flow characteristics. The first eigen mode would be useful to find out the tip vortex positions immersed in the unstable downstream region.
