  • In this paper, we discuss a reduced-order modeling for the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers (BBMB) equation and its application to a distributed feedback control problem through the centroidal Voronoi tessellation (CVT). Spatial distcritization to the BBMB equation is based on the finite element method (FEM) using B-spline functions. To determine the basis elements for the approximating subspaces, we elucidate the CVT approaches to reduced-order bases with snapshots. For the purpose of comparison, a brief review of the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is provided and some numerical experiments implemented including full-order approximation, CVT based model, and POD based model. In the end, we apply CVT reduced-order modeling technique to a feedback control problem for the BBMB equation.

  • It is reported that the mechanical properties of vertebral trabecular bone depend on the density and the mass of bones. Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disease caused by low bone mass and microstructure deterioration of trabecular bone. Silva and Gibson (1997) studied the treatment of age-related bone loss using drug therapy. Vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive surgery for the treatment of osteoporosis vertebrae. This procedure includes puncturing vertebrae and filling with Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). However, the relative effect of drug therapy and bone cement for osteoporosis treatment is not reported yet. In this study, several 2D models of human vertebral trabecular bone are analyzed by finite element method. The mechanical behaviors of the vertebral trabecular bone treated by the drug therapy and the bone cement are compared. This study shows that bone cement treatment is more effective strategy than drug therapy to prevent the degradation of bone strength.

  • Automated mission planning for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is difficult because of the propagation of several sources of error into the solution, as for any large scale autonomous system. To ensure reliable system performance, we quantify all sources of error and their propagation through a mission planner for operation of UAVs in an obstacle rich environment we developed in prior work. In this sequel to that work, we show that the mission planner developed before can be made robust to errors arising from the mapping, sensing, actuation, and environmental disturbances through creating systematic buffers around obstacles using the calculations of uncertainty propagation. This robustness makes the mission planner truly autonomous and scalable to many UAVs without human intervention. We illustrate with simulation results for trajectory generation of multiple UAVs in a surveillance problem in an urban environment while optimizing for either maximal flight time or minimal fuel consumption. Our solution methods are suitable for any well-mapped region, and the final collision free paths are obtained through offline sub-optimal solution of an mTSP (multiple traveling salesman problem).

  • The objective of this paper is to make the weighted graph map for path planning using the ultrasonic sensor measurements that are acquired when an A.M.R (autonomous mobile robot) explores the unknown circumstance. First, The A.M.R navigates on unknown space with wall-following and gathers the sensor data from the environments. After this, we constructs the occupancy grid map by interpreting the gathered sensor data to occupancy probability. For the path planning of roadmap method, the weighted graph map is extracted from the occupancy grid map using morphological image processing and thinning algorithm. This methods is implemented on an A.M.R having a ultrasonic sensor.

  • The Voronoi diagram (VD) is the most suitable mechanism to find the nearest neighbor (NN) for mobile clients. In NN query processing, it is important to reduce the query response time, since a late query response may contain out-of-date information. In this paper, we study the issue of location dependent information services (LDISs) using a VD. To begin our study, we first introduce a broadcast-based spatial query processing methods designed to support NN query processing. In further sections, we introduce a generic method for location-dependent sequential prefetching and caching. The performance of this scheme is studied in different simulated environments. The core contribution of this research resides in our analytical proof and experimental results.

  • An h-adaptive scheme of first-order least-squares meshfree method is presented. A posteriori error estimates, which can be readily computed from the residual, are also presented. For elliptic problem the error indicators are further improved by applying the Aubin-Nitsche method. In the proposed refinement scheme, Voronoi cells are utilized to insert nodes at appropriate positions. Through numerical examples, it is demonstrated that the error indicators reveal good correlations with the actual errors and the adaptive first-order least-squares meshfree method is effectively applied to the localized problems such as the shock formation in fluid dynamics.

  • Bulk metallic glasses (BMG) have been greatly improved by the advance of synthesis process during last three decades. It was also found that the Glass Forming Ability (GFA) strongly depends on the glass transition temperature. When the temperature approaches to a critical value, the crystals nucleation from the supercooled liquid can be suppressed so that bulk glass formation possible. Egami and others found that the local glass transition temperature depends on the volumetric strain of each atom and suggested the critical transition temperature. In this paper, we explore the strain dependency of local glass transition temperature using the atomic strain defined by the deformation tensor for the Voronoi polyhedra.

  • A method of three-demensional finite element mesh generation is presented in this paper. This method is based on the Delaunay's triangulation whose dual is Voronoi's diagram. A set of points is given on the boundary surface of the concerning domain and the initial tetrahedra are generated by the given set of points. Then, the quality of every tetrahedron is investigated and the interior points are generated near the tetrahedra which are inferior in quality and the tetrahedra of good quality can be controlled by the density of the initial boundary points. Regions with different material constant can be refined in tetrahedra respectively. To confirm the effectiveness of this algorithm, the total volume of tetrahedra was compared to the true volume and this mesh generator was applied to a three-dimensional electostatic problem.

  • An empirical way of a covariance matrix which expresses the odometry uncertainty of mobile robots is proposed. This method utilizes PC-method which removes systematic errors of odometry. Once the systematic errors are removed, the odometry error can be modeled using the Gaussian probability distribution, and the parameters of the distribution can be represented by the covariance matrix. Experimental results show that the method yields $5{\%}$ and $2.3{\%}$ offset for the synchro and differential drive robots.
