  • The sink mark on boss parts is generated by the volumetric shrinkage that is caused by both the molding thickness and the boss wall thickness. The volumetric shrinkage is caused by packing pressure and its amount tends to decrease by increasing the packing pressure. The packing pressure can therefore increase the flow rate to a boss part and causes the depth of sink mark to increase. As the molding thickness and the boss wall thickness in the boss part can increase the part volume, these may yield bad solidifying and also extend the molding cycle. In this paper, both the injection molding test and the flow analysis were carried out to investigate the effect of sink mark that was generated in the boss wall thickness of injection molded products. The sink mark could also be caused by thickness ratio of boss part. For a given thickness ratio of boss, several molding process parameters such as packing pressure, packing time and melt temperature, affecting to generation of the sink mark were discussed.

  • The quality of injection molded parts is affected by the variables such as materials, design variables of part and mold, molding machine, and processing conditions. It is difficult to consider all the variables at the same time to predict the quality. In this paper neural network was applied to analyze the relationship between processing conditions and volumetric shrinkage of part. Engineering plastic gear was used for the study, and the learning data was extracted by the simulation software like Moldflow. Results of neural network was good agreement with simulation results. Nonlinear regression model was formulated using the test data of 3,125 obtained from neural network, Optimal processing conditions were calculated to minimize the volumetric shrinkage of molded part by the application of RQP(Recursive Quadratic Programming) algorithm.

  • To measure the dimensional stability of three softwoods by vacuum pressurization of water soluble melamine-formaldehyde (MF) resin impregnation process, properties of resin treated compressed woods (compregs) were measured after impregnating the water soluble MF resin into three coniferous wood species for different impregnation times and resin concentrations. As the resin concentration was higher and impregnation time was longer, coefficients of volumetric shrinkage and anti-volumetric swelling efficiency increased, but coefficients of volumetric swelling, anti-volumetric swelling efficiency and absorption decreased. Also, weight percent gain increased remarkably as the resin concentration was high, but there was no uniform relationship with impregnation time.

  • To reduce volumetric shrinkage of the commercially available polymeric dental composite during curing reaction, (2,2-bis [4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxy propoxy) phenyl] propane) (bis -GMA) derivatives, i.e., (2,2-bis[3-methyl, 4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxy propoxy) phenyl] propan) (DMBis-GMA) and (2,2-his [3,5-dimethyl ,4- (2-hydroxy-3-methacryloyloxy propoxy) phenyl] propane) (TMBis-GMA) were synthesized and then new dental composite resin composed of Bis-GMA derivatives, diluent, spiro orthocarbonate (SOC), and inorganic filler was produced. Among the Bis-GMA derivative/Bis-GMA derivative/diluent mixtures, Bis-GMA/ TMBis-GMA/TEGDMA mixture exhibited the lowest volumetric shrinkage. Volumetric shrinkage of this mixture was further reduced by adding SOC. Volumtric shrinkage of dental composite prepared from commercially available resin monomer mixture was $2.5\%$, while that prepared from resin monomer mixture having minimum volumetric shrinkage was reduced to $0.7\%$. Mechanical strength of this dental composite was nearly the same with that of commercial products but the time required for the curing reaction was retarded.

  • The purpose of this study was to measure the volumetric polymerization shrinkage kinetics and stress of a silorane-based dental restorative composite and compare it with those of conventional methacrylate-based dental composites. Two methacrylate-based composites (Z250, Z350 flowable) and one silorane-based composite (P90) were investigated. The volumetric polymerization shrinkage of the composites during light curing was measured using a laboratory-made volume shrinkage measurement instrument based on the Archimedes' principle, and the polymerization stress was also determined with the strain gage method. The shrinkage of silorane-based composites (P90) was the lowest, and that of Z350 flowable was the highest. Peak polymerization shrinkage rate was the lowest in P90 and the highest in Z350 flowable. The time to reach peak shrinkage rate of P90 was longer than those of the methacrylate-based composites. The polymerization shrinkage stress of P90 was lower than those of the methacrylate-based composites.

  • Precision injection molding is an important technology for improving productivity and lowering costs in the fields of medical components, lenses and electrical connectors. The quality of injection molded parts is affected by various processing conditions such as filling time and packing pressure profile. It is difficult to consider all the variables at the same time for prediction of the quality. In this study, the genetic algorithm was used to obtain the optimal processing conditions for minimizing the volumetric shrinkage of molded parts. For a higher convergence rate, the method of design of experiments was used to analyze the relationship between processing conditions and volumetric shrinkage of molded parts, which served as analysis tool for the capability of searching optimal processing conditions but also greatly reduces the calculation time by utilizing the information of searching area. As a practical example, compact disks that require micron-level precision were chosen for the study.

  • Supplementary features in injection molded products, which are boss, rib and snap fit, are mainly located in the products. These features might make molding flow improper in injection processing and consequently give rise to some of molding troubles such as short shot and hesitation. The sink mark on boss parts is generated by the volumetric shrinkage that is caused by both the molding thickness and the closed boss height. The volumetric shrinkage is affected by packing pressure and its amount tends to decrease by increasing the packing pressure. The packing pressure can therefore increase flow rate to a boss part and causes the sink mark depth to increase. As the molding thickness and the closed boss height in the boss part can increase the part volume, these may yield bad solidifying and also extend the molding cycle. In this paper, both the injection molding test and the flow analysis were carried out to investigate the effect of sink marks generated in the boss part of injection molded products.

  • This paper describes on the volume change of Sewage Dredged Soils by using laboratory test and volumetric change test. The tremendous change of Moisture Content occured in the Sewage Dredged Soils during the Elapsed Time. The Unit Weight increases during the normally shrinkage limit void ratio and then the unit weight decrease. A volume of Sewage Dredged Soils according to the moisture content is a difference maximum 2.5 times. And there is the difference 3.5 times according to the change of unit weight. Therefore, the moisture content and unit weight computation are very important for the computation on the volume of Sewage Drdeged Soils.

  • The chemical shrinkage and the autogenous shrinkage have been determined experimentally for cement pastes incorporating different W/C ratio and different amount of the following addition: silica fume, fly ash and sand. The measurement method of the chemical shrinkage and autogenous shrinkage both were the volumetric technique. The silica fume has a effect of increasing the autogenous shrinkage while have a minor effect on the chemical shrinkage. The addition of fly-ash and sand both decreased the amount of chemical shrinkage and autogenous shrinkage.
