  • We developed a technology that can measure the hydrogen uptake and diffusivity of rubber materials by using the volumetric analysis method and diffusivity analysis program through the measurement of the water level in the graduated cylinder. In this method, hydrogen gas is charged at a certain pressure for a certain period of time for a rubber material exposed to a high-pressure hydrogen gas environment, and then the pressure is reduced to measure the change in the water level in the graduated cylinder in real time, and based on the measured value, it is a technology that can evaluate hydrogen uptake and diffusivity using diffusivity analysis program. Using this method, the hydrogen uptake and diffusivity of the NBR material were measured with respect to the change in the type and weight ratio of the filler used to improve the physical properties of the rubber material. In addition, uncertainty analysis was performed on the diffusivity measurement method.

  • Volumetric pressure plate extractor (VPPE) can be used for measurement of the soil-water characteristic curve in the laboratory using the axis-translation technique. The volume of extracted water from the soil specimen in VPPE can be measured continuously during the test without stoppage of air pressure for the measurements. However, the water volume measurement in VPPE using an air trap, a ballast tube, a burette, and a vacuum device so as to maintain a constant pore-water pressure in the soil specimen, is quite complicated and tedious. In order to improve the measuring problems of VPPE, a modified volumetric pressure plate extractor (MVPPE) was developed and tested on residual soil specimens. In addition, the modified apparatus can measure the volume of the extracted water using both Method A and Method B of ASTM D 6836-02 depending on the range of matric suction. Measuring principles and the improvements of MVPPE and typical results obtained from the tests are discussed in the paper.

  • Three-dimensional Lagrangian fluid finite element is applied to seismic response analysis of an oil storage tank with a floating roof. The fluid element utilized in the present analysis is formulated based on the displacement finite element method considering only volumetric elasticity and its element stiffness matrix is derived by using one-point integration method in order to avoid volumetric locking. The method usually adds a rotational penalty stiffness to satisfy the irrotational condition for fluid motion and modifies element mass matrices through the projected mass method to suppress spurious hourglass-mode appeared in compensation for one-point integration. In the fluid element utilized in the present paper, a small hourglass stiffness is employed. The fluid and structure domains for the objective oil storage tank are modeled by eight-node solid elements and four-node shell elements, respectively, and the transient response of the floating roof structure or the free surface are evaluated by implicit direct time integration method. The results of seismic response analyses are compared with those by other method and the validation of the present analysis using three-dimensional Lagrangian fluid finite elements is shown.

  • To apply Sievert's type apparatus to thermal analysis of hydrogen absorption materials, the dehydrogenation of $LaNi_5$ system was investigated. As the initial wt% of hydrogen was increased from 0.44 to 1.24 wt%, the peak temperature of evolution rate shifted to higher temperature. However, with the initial wt% of hydrogen higher than 0.95 wt%, the peak temperature of evolution rate did not change. As the heating rate was increased, the peak temperature increased; the peak temperatures for heating rates 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 K/min were 262.2, 264.1, and 265.9 K respectively. The Sievert's type automatic apparatus can be successively applied to the thermal analysis of $LaNi_5$ hydride.

  • Eddy current induction is used in a wide range of electronic devices, for example in detection sensors. Due to the advances in computer hardware and software, the need for 3D computation and system comprehension is a requirement to develop and optimize such devices nowadays. Pure theoretical models are mostly limited to special cases. On the other hand, the classical use of commercial Finite Element (FE) electromagnetic 3D models is not computationally efficient and lacks modeling flexibility or robustness. The proposed approach focuses on: (1) implementing theoretical formulations in 3D (FE) model of a detection device as well as (2) an automatic Volumetric Estimation Method (VEM) developed to selectively model the target finite elements. Due to these two approaches, this model is suitable for parametric studies and optimization of the number, location, shape, and size of PCB receivers in order to get the desired target discrimination information preserving high accuracy with tenfold reduction in computation time compared to commercial FE software.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the chemical shrinkage and autogenous shrinkage of high strength cement paste and silica fume and fly ash and sand to cement ratio by the method of volumetric tests, and also investigate the autogenous shrinkage of high measurement method, and compare the results of volumetric test and linear length measurement test. A series of cement paste which have W/C ratio of 25%, 35%, 45% respectively were planed to study the effect of the W/C ratio to the shrinkages, and a series of cement paste which were replaced the cement by the silica fume and fly ash with 5%, 10%, 15% as the mass of cement respectively were planed to investigate the effects of poazolana to the shrinkages. A series of mortar which have a C/S ratio of 1:1, 1:1.5, 1:2 respectively were planed to investigate the shrinkage resistant effect of aggregate.

  • An attempt to improve the method of volumetric determination of tungsten developed by Luke has been made successfully. Using amalgam coated lead instead of pure metallic lead in the reduction procedure. W(VI)-W(III) reduction has been found to be quantitative in rather concentrated hydrochloric acid. Since there was no excessive dissolution of lead via reduction of hydrogen ion, lead surface was totally accessible for the reduction of tungsten and no trouble was caused by dereposition of $PbCl_2$ crystals at the nozzle of Jones reductor. Furthermore, it has been confirmed that almost 100 mg. of $WO_3$ can be handled easily if the chloride concentration of the HCl is increased by adding solid $NH_4Cl$.

  • A volumetric method of the determination of calcium carbonate and calcium fluoride in fluorspar concentrate is described. The carbonate is converted into solution by treatment of the sample in HNO$_3$-acetone (l% by volume) mixture, and the fluoride by treating the residue with H$_3BO_3$-HCl mixture. The calcium in the solution is determined volumetrically using EDTA standard solution. The selective dissolution of calcium carbonate by HNO$_3$-acetone mixture is superior to Bidtel's acetic method and little correction for the dissolution of calcium fluoride is needed. Triethanolamine is found to be superior to KCN in masking heavy metal ions.

  • Geophysical survey for establishing a wide site for the distribution of water content, wetting front infiltration due to the rainfall, and distribution of groundwater level has been performed by using 8round penetration radar (GPR) method, electrical resistivity method, and so on. On the other hand, a narrow area survey was performed to use a permittivity method such as time domain reflectometry, frequency domain reflectometry, and amplitude domain reflectometry methods for estimating volumetric water content, soil density, and concentration of contaminant in surface and subsurface. The permittivity methods establish more corrective physical parameters than different found survey technologies mentioned above. In this study for establishment of infiltration behaviors for wetting front in the unsaturated soil caused by an artificial rainfall, soil physical parameters for volumetric water content, pore water pressure, and pore air pressure were measured by FDR measurement device and pore water pressure meter which are installed in the unsaturated weathered granite soil with different depths. Consequently, the authors were proposed to a new establishment method for analyzing the variations of volumetric water content and wetting front infiltration from the responses of infiltrating pore water in the unsaturated soil.
