A Study on the Estimation of Design Service Traffic Volume for Turbo Roundabout (국내 나선형 교차로 도입을 위한 적정교통량 산정연구)

  • It is generally known that a two-lane roundabout has some problems in safety such as increasing conflicts, typically merging and diverging conflicts and conflicts between entering traffic and exiting as well as turning traffic. To solve these problems, a turbo-roundabout had been developed and has successfully brought safer and more efficient operation in other countries. In this study, micro simulations using VISSIM were conducted to investigate the maximum value of service traffic volume. It was found that operation of turbo-roundabouts was influenced by traffic volume for each turning traffic, and the maximum values of traffic volume were values between 2,400 and 2,800 vehicles per hour as rates of traffic volume for each turning traffic. Typically, turbo-roundabouts have limited to operate in conditions with more than 30% for left-turning traffic volume.

  • In this study, to identify the ineffectiveness of inter-connected system of cargo volume between the Pusan Port and inland areas and also to make more rational suggestions, the following conclusions were drawn by analyzing Container Cargo Traffic from BCTOC to Off-Dock CY: 1. There existed about 30% to 50% reduction in the container transport times when the container transport vehicles were operated during the off-peak period to alleviate the traffic congestion due to mixed traffic. 2. There appeared to be more economic when Off-Dock DY's scattered around the City of Pusan were unified in one ODCY Unit at YangSan, and the Exclusive Overpass Freeway System for the container transport vehicles were constructed and operated on the existing Urban Freeway from BCTOC ti this ODCY Unit (Expected to make about 230 billions Won in net present value by NPV method).

A Study on the Implication of Volume Contract Clause under Rotterdam Rules (로테르담 규칙상 수량계약조항의 시사점에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study aims to analyse the implications of volume contract clause with Rotterdam Rules. The Hague-Visby Rules have been in force this jurisdiction for over 30 years. In those three decades they have performed valiant service, both for the development of maritime law in this country and for the countless parties from around the world who have chosen courts and arbitral tribunals in London for the resolution of disputes arising under bills of lading or under charterparties incorporating the Hague-Visby Rules. While the Hague-Visby Rules apply only to bills of lading or any other similar documents of title and hence all other contracts of carriage are not subject to the current regime, this is not the case for the Rotterdam Rules which, broadly speaking, apply to contracts of carriage whether or not a shipping document or electronic transport record is issued. To preserve freedom of contract where necessary, however, a number of significant concessions were made and Article 80 represents one of the most controversial: that of volume contracts. However, the provision lends itself to abuse under each one of the elements as there is no minimum quantity, period of time or frequency and the minimum number of shipments is clearly just two. This means that important contracts of affreighment concluded pursuant to, for example, oil supply agreements have the same right to be excluded from the scope of application of the Rotterdam Rules. The fact that a volume contract may incorporate by reference the carrier's public schedule of services and the transport document or other similar documents as terms of the contract would make a carefully drafted booking note for consecutive shipments a potential volume contract as well.

Classification of Urban Arterial Roads Based on Traffic Characteristics (교통특성에 따른 도시간선도로 위계분류법)

  • Studies on classification of national roads have been continued, but there is little research on the classification of urban arterial roads. Due to the increase of traffic volume, urban arterial roads do not perform well as main roads. In this paper, the function of urban arterial road was established by using cluster analysis using traffic characteristics. Traffic characteristics such as traffic volume, weekend coefficient and speed coefficient were used to establish the functions of 55 main arterial roads in Seoul. The results of this paper are compared with those of the method using AADT. The method using AADT classifies the characteristics according to the traffic volume of the whole lane. In this paper, however, the results are derived using the traffic volume per lane reflecting the actual traffic volume. In addition, the functional classification of the arterial roads in Seoul was compared with the results of this paper to verify that the traffic characteristics were reflected. As a result, the method presented in this paper is more effective in showing traffic characteristics than the current highway functional classification method, and the functional classification system will be helpful for road extension and planning design.

Relationship between Pedestrian Network and Pedestrian Volume Using Connectivity (연결도를 이용한 보행네트워크와 보행통행량의 상호관련성 연구)

  • It is important to know pedestrian volume to carry out pedestrian safety analysis and pedestrian friendly design. However, it is too difficult to come across research work related to pedestrian volume analysis in the field of transport, due to lack of interests on pedestrian movement. Most transport research has been focused on vehicles and highways rather than pedestrian. On the other hand, in the field of urban studies, there comes an effective tool to estimate pedestrian volumes using Space Syntax theory. This theory twins out to be effective and economic because it only requires network information, which is easy to acquire from maps and field survey. However, this method is different in the way representing networks from the way that is common in the field of transport. To make up for this point, this paper develops a novel measure for estimating pedestrian volume using Dial's algorithm, and applies the model in the two test networks; Insadong and Soongryemoon networks. The application results reveals that developed measure is an effective tool to explain pedestrian volume; a correlation coefficient between the measure and pedestrian volume is 0.713 in Insadong and 0.492 in Soongryemoon, and the goodness of fit($R^2$) of regression models are 0.893 in Insadong and 0.671 in Soongryemoon. This estimation method is significantly less complicated to estimate the effect of a pedestrian network change than Space Syntax theory, which requires special softwares not readily available.

  • The "Low Emission Zone" (LEZ) system restricts entry of vehicles with high air pollutants into city centers. Implementation of the system improves air environment around the world. Since 2012, operating restrictions have been applied to all of Seoul's metropolitan areas and some other metropolitan areas in the state. Beginning in December 2019, entry of 5th class vehicles to the central green transport zone of Seoul has been restricted. In this study we examine the status of operational restrictions in this zone, and predict the amount of traffic reduction expected when numbers of target vehicles are expanded in the future, we use data for each vehicle's emission grade: by region and 'Origin-Destination Traffic Volume'. After estimating the amount of traffic entering Seoul's 25 autonomous districts, by emission class, we propose a target region that may have a significant effect if target areas for automobile operation restrictions expand in the future.

Estimation of Sea Water Transport by Water-depth Variation at Pier-bridge between Busan New-port and the Nakdong River Estuary (부산 신항-낙동강 하구역 연결잔교부의 물질수송 해석(II) - 잔교주변 해저수심변화에 따른 해수소통량 예측 -)

  • This study analyzed the characteristics of sea water transport between Busan New-port and the Nakdong River estuary. Numerical modeling was used to evaluate the characteristics of the tidal current. Numerical simulations of three different topographies were conducted. The results are summarized as follows: 1) The volume of sea water transport was reduced by $0.7{\sim}18.4%$ when water depth was decreased at Busan New-port (10 m); 2) The volume of sea water transport was increased by $3.5{\sim}21.9%$ when a channel (depth 5 m) was constructed in the direction of the Nakdong River estuary.

Involvement of a Novel Organic Cation Transporter in Paeonol Transport Across the Blood-Brain Barrier

  • Paeonol has neuroprotective function, which could be useful for improving central nervous system disorder. The purpose of this study was to characterize the functional mechanism involved in brain transport of paeonol through blood-brain barrier (BBB). Brain transport of paeonol was characterized by internal carotid artery perfusion (ICAP), carotid artery single injection technique (brain uptake index, BUI) and intravenous (IV) injection technique in vivo. The transport mechanism of paeonol was examined using conditionally immortalized rat brain capillary endothelial cell line (TR-BBB) as an in vitro model of BBB. Brain volume of distribution (VD) of [$^3H$]paeonol in rat brain was about 6-fold higher than that of [$^{14}C$]sucrose, the vascular space marker of BBB. The uptake of [$^3H$]paeonol was concentration-dependent. Brain volume of distribution of paeonol and BUI as in vivo and inhibition of analog as in vitro studies presented significant reduction effect in the presence of unlabeled lipophilic compounds such as paeonol, imperatorin, diphenhydramine, pyrilamine, tramadol and ALC during the uptake of [$^3H$]paeonol. In addition, the uptake significantly decreased and increased at the acidic and alkaline pH in both extracellular and intracellular study, respectively. In the presence of metabolic inhibitor, the uptake reduced significantly but not affected by sodium free or membrane potential disruption. Similarly, paeonol uptake was not affected on OCTN2 or rPMAT siRNA transfection BBB cells. Interestingly. Paeonol is actively transported from the blood to brain across the BBB by a carrier mediated transporter system.

The Effects of Restrictions in Economic Activity on the Spread of COVID-19 in the Philippines: Insights from Apple and Google Mobility Indicators

  • This study aims to investigate the effects of restrictions in economic activity on the spread of COVID-19 in the Philippines. This research employs daily time-series data of confirmed new COVID-19 cases, Apple mobility trends (i.e., use of public transport to destinations, volume of people driving, and amount of walking to destinations) and Google community mobility (i.e., visits to transit stations, visits to workplaces, and staying-at-home) indicators covering the period February 17 to September 11, 2020. The analysis starts by establishing the correlation pattern of new confirmed COVID-19 daily infections to each independent variable. The results show negative linear correlation of the number of new COVID-19 daily infections with less visit to transit station, increase stay-at-home, less use of public transport, and less amount of walking to destinations. Interestingly, the number of new COVID-19 daily infections indicates some form of positive linear correlation with visits to workplaces and volume of people driving. Moreover, employing robust least square regression via the method of MM-estimation, major findings reveal that across mobility measures, staying-at-home has the highest impact on reducing the spread of COVID-19, followed by visiting transit stations less, less use of public transport, less amount of walking, and less workplace visits.

Analysis of the Transport Characteristics of Bulk Cargo in Freight Stations Located Behind Trade Ports (무역항 배후 화물철도역의 벌크화물 운송특성 분석)

  • The present study analyzed the railway transport characteristics of bulk cargo flowing in and out of trade ports in South Korea. Bulk cargo transport in freight stations located behind trade ports was examined using actual flow data, and new implications were drawn accordingly. The results showed that bulk cargo volume in freight stations located behind trade ports is gradually decreasing, and it is also failing to secure a competitive edge against road transport. This downfall can be mainly attributed to the decrease in competitiveness of railway transport as well as the emergence of new trade ports that do not have lead-in track for port. Therefore, greater effort is required to strengthen the connection between new trade ports and railway freight stations.
