  • This paper presents the design and performance of low pull-in voltage MEMS switches for commercial cellular/PCS applications. The switches have all-metal (3 ${\mu}m$ thick Au) movable plates over CPW(Coplanar Waveguide) transmission line. The stress gradient in a movable plate is considered in mechanical design to obtain an accurate pull-in voltage. Series metal-to-metal contact switches are fabricated and evaluated. Those switches exhibit the low loss(<0.2 dB @1.9 GHz) with good isolation(55 dB @1.9 GHz).

  • Estimating the state of charge (SOC) of a battery is essential for increasing the stability and reliability of a photovoltaic system. In this study, battery SOC estimation methods were proposed using artificial neural networks (ANNs) with gradient descent (GD), Levenberg-Marquardt (LM), and scaled conjugate gradient (SCG), and an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The charge start voltage and the integrated charge current were used as input data and the SOC was used as output data. Four models (ANN-GD, ANN-LM, ANN-SCG, and ANFIS) were implemented for battery SOC estimation and compared using MATLAB. The experimental results revealed that battery SOC estimation using the ANFIS model had both the highest accuracy and highest convergence speed.

  • A 50W class MCFC stack was operated in order to test a new design of the circular shaped separator. in the new design, the anode gas was supplied into the stack and was exhausted out of the stack after the anode reaction. The exhausted gas was reacted with the cathode gas supplied with excess oxygen in the vessel in which the stack was placed. Then the reacted gas flowed into the cathode side of the stack and was exhausted through the outlet located in the center of the stack. The average voltage of the single cells in the stack was 0.835V under the current density of $150mA/cm^2$, initially, and the degradation rate of the stack voltage was 1.7%/1,000h. High stack voltage with good stability of the present stack was due to the small temperature gradient in the stack. The small temperature gradient as well as the easiness of temperature control was the result of the new configuration of the separator which utilized the heat of the combustion reaction between anode outlet gas and the cathode inlet gas for heating the stack.

  • A vibrating double-layered nanoscale piezoelectric plate is developed accounting for the flexoelectricity and surface effects. The flexoelectricity is due to the coupling between electrical polarization and strain gradient. Applying Hamilton's principle, the governing equations and related boundary conditions are derived. Assuming suitable approximate functions, the governing equations are numerically solved for simply-supported and clamped boundary conditions. Obtained results indicate that both the flexoelectricity and surface effects possess notable impact on the vibration frequencies of the system. Only flexoelectricity yields a considerable difference between the present model and previous investigations on conventional piezoelectric nanoplates. Generally, a parametric study has been performed to examine the effects of surface elasticity, flexoelectricity, applied electric voltage, interlayer stiffness, geometrical parameters and boundary conditions on vibration frequencies of piezoelectric nanoplates.

  • This study was designed to satisfy induced voltage limits considering drive's specifications and optimize design reducing usage of permanent magnet, by increasing salient poles ratio, when designing 150kW IPMSM. In order to achieve these objectives, design plans were determined, based on Ld and Lq parameters of a basic design model, according to changes in salient poles ratio and flux linkage using IPMSM's voltage equation and torque equation and then, required torque and induced voltage were analyzed using Sensitivity Analysis. Based on analysis data, the optimum design was performed and basic model's characteristics were compared to final model's through Gradient-Based Optimization Technique.

  • Hydrocarbon contamination is among the most challenging problems in soil remediation. Electrokinetic method can be a promising method to remediate hydrocarbon-contaminated soils. Electrokinetic method consists of different transport phenomena including electro-migration, electrophoresis, and electroosmotic flow. Electroosmotic flow is the main transport phenomenon for hydrocarbon removal in soil porous media. However, the main component of hydrocarbons is the hydrophobic organic which indicates low water solubility; therefore, it makes the electroosmotic flow less effective. The objective of the present study is to enhance electrokinetic remediation of diesel-contaminated silty sand by increasing the solubility of the hydrocarbons in the soil and then increase the efficiency. For this purpose, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was used as a catholyte. In this content, SDS 0.05 M was used as catholyte and $Na_2SO_4$ 0.1 M was used as an anolyte. Low (1 V/cm) and high (2 V/cm) voltage gradients were used in periodic and continuous forms. The best removal efficiency was observed for high voltage gradient (2 V/cm) in a periodic form, which was 63.86. This result showed that a combination of periodic voltage application in addition to the employment of SDS is an effective method for hydrocarbon removal from low permeable sand.

  • In this research, the dynamic instability region (DIR) of the sandwich nano-beams are investigated based on nonlocal strain gradient elasticity theory (NSGET) and various higher order shear deformation beam theories (HSDBTs). The sandwich piezoelectric nano-beam is including a homogenous core and face-sheets reinforced with functionally graded (FG) carbon nanotubes (CNTs). In present study, three patterns of CNTs are employed in order to reinforce the top and bottom face-sheets of the beam. In addition, different higher-order shear deformation beam theories such as trigonometric shear deformation beam theory (TSDBT), exponential shear deformation beam theory (ESDBT), hyperbolic shear deformation beam theory (HSDBT), and Aydogdu shear deformation beam theory (ASDBT) are considered to extract the governing equations for different boundary conditions. The beam is subjected to thermal and electrical loads while is resting on Visco-Pasternak foundation. Hamilton principle is used to derive the governing equations of motion based on various shear deformation theories. In order to analysis of the dynamic instability behaviors, the linear governing equations of motion are solved using differential quadrature method (DQM). After verification with validated reference, comprehensive numerical results are presented to investigate the influence of important parameters such as various shear deformation theories, nonlocal parameter, strain gradient parameter, the volume fraction of the CNTs, various distributions of the CNTs, different boundary conditions, dimensionless geometric parameters, Visco-Pasternak foundation parameters, applied voltage and temperature change on the dynamic instability characteristics of sandwich piezoelectric nano-beam.

  • In this paper, we propose a transformer of alternating voltage source utilizing a semiconductor, operating in bidirectional fashion. Transformer is a device transferring energy by inductive coupling between its winding circuits. Conventional transformer is a device, composed of a primary coil and a secondary coil, transforming an alternating voltage. The system we propose is designed with a single circuit transforming the level of voltage signal in two ways; from the source to the load, and vice versa. For semiconductor switches, the NPN transistor is connected to the alternating voltage source terminal, and emitter terminal is connected to the inductor in the system as an energy storage element. The control signal is applied to the base terminal of the semiconductors. We have shown that the system we propose, by adopting only one circuit, drives an alternating voltage transformer that changes the amplitudes of voltage signal in reciprocal way.

  • Heat is a familiar form of energy transported from a hot side to a colder side of an object, but not a notion associated with microscopic measurements of electronic properties. A temperature difference within a material causes charge carriers, electrons or holes, to diffuse along the temperature gradient inducing a thermoelectric voltage. Here we show that local thermoelectric measurements can yield high sensitivity imaging of structural disorder on the atomic and nanometre scales. Using this imaging technique, we discovered a defect-mediated dimensional evolution of strain-response patterns in epitaxial graphene with increasing thickness.

  • The discussion of this study is that we proposed a new construction to improve the potency of LCOS projection monitor. We suggest a new construction that uses special optics coating to reduce the green channel and obtains a purer white field. Compared with the voltage method to adjust on the monitor, we can get higher contrast gradient.
