In this paper, we analyze the typical phase voltage and line current waveform characteristics of the distribution system with 3 phase small synchronous generation source in case with load and non-load group, in order to investigate the power quality for end load connected of generation source. As demonstrated by our experimental results, the distortion and power quality of phase voltage and line current waveform were relatively good for low voltage 3 phase model grids connected of 3 phase small synchronous generation source in case with non-load group. However, distortion and power quality of voltage and current waveform was poor for low voltage 3 phase model grids connected to 3 phase small synchronous generation source in the load group with some phase voltage and frequency difference. From the above results, we conclude that the phase voltage and frequency of 3 phase generation source must be identical to that of distribution system source to maximize the power quality. Also, special attention is required in case of having load group or non-load group to 3 phase generation source.
This paper proposes an improved modulation scheme for the medium voltage modular multi-level converter (MMC), which operates in the nearest level control and applies in the medium voltage direct current (MVDC) system. In the proposed modulation scheme, the offset (neutral-to-zero output) voltage is adjusted, with the phase voltage magnitude, thereby maintaining a constant value with N+1 level in the controllable modulation index (MI) range. In order to confirm the proposed scheme's validity, computer simulations for the 22.9 kV - 25 MVA MMC were performed with PSCAD/EMTDC, as well as hardware experiments for the 380 V - 10 kVA MMC. The proposed modulation scheme offers to build a constant pole voltage regardless of the MI value, and to build a phase voltage with improved total harmonic distortion (THD).

A pulse width modulation-voltage source inverter (PWM-VSI) is used for variable speed permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives. The PWM-VSI fed PMSM has two major disadvantages. Firstly, the PWM-VSI DC-link voltage limits the magnitude of the PMSM terminal voltage. As a result, the motor speed is restricted. Secondly, in a low speed range, the PWM-VSI modulation index declines. This is caused by a high DC-link voltage and a low terminal voltage ratio. As a result, the distortion of the voltage command and the stator current are increased. This paper proposes an optimal pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) control which can adjust the inverter DC-link voltage by using a buck-boost DC-DC converter. At a low speed range, the proposed system can reduce the distortion of the voltage command, which improves the stator current waveform. Also, the allowable speed range is extended. In order to verify the proposed method, experimental results are provided to confirm the simulation results.
Coupling capacitor voltage transformers (CCVT) are widely used in high voltage power systems to obtain standard low voltage signal for protective relaying and measuring instruments. To obtain high accuracy, capacitances and inductances are tuned to the power system frequency, making a parallel resonant circuit. When no fault occurs, no distortion of the secondary voltage is generated. However, when a fault occurs, harmonics generated break the resonance between capacitances and inductance, which generates the distortion of the secondary voltage. This paper proposes an algorithm for compensating the secondary voltage of the CCVT. With the values of the secondary voltage of the CCVT, the secondary currents, the primary currents and the voltages across the capacitors and inductor are calculated. Test results indicate that the proposed algorithm can compensate the distorted secondary voltage of the CCVT, and is irrespective of the fault distance, the fault inception angle and the burden.
This paper presents a three-phase Line-Interactive uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system with series-parallel active power-line conditioning capabilities, using synchronous reference frame (SRF) based controller, which allows an effective power factor correction, source harmonic voltage compensation, load harmonic current suppression, and output voltage regulation. The three-phase UPS system consists of two active power compensator topologies. One is a series active compensator, which works as a voltage source in phase with the source voltage to have the sinusoidal source current and high power factor under the deviation and distortion of the source voltage. The other is a parallel active compensator which works as a conventional sinusoidal voltage source in phase with the source voltage, providing to the load a regulated and sinusoidal voltage with low THD (total harmonic distortion). The control algorithm using SRF method and the active power flow through the Line-interactive UPS systems are described and studied. The simulation and experimental results are depicted in this paper to show the effect of the proposed algorithm.
Power quality refers to voltage quality and current quality. Voltage quality means supply reliance such as voltage sag, voltage swell. and short-time interruption. Current quality is related to power factor, harmonic distortion, negative-sequence and zero-sequence current. We fabricated Customer STATCOM to improve current quality such as reactive power, harmonic distortion, and load imbalance. In this paper. We summarize the spec, of STATCOM. its hardware configuration, and control system.
The three-phase four-leg voltage source inverter (VSI) topology can be an interesting option for the three phase-four wire system. With an additional leg, this topology can handle the neutral current, hence the DC link capacitance can be reduced significantly. In this paper the three dimensional space vector modulation (3D SVM) in ${\alpha}{\beta}{\gamma}$ coordinates for the three-phase four-leg VSI is presented. By using the 3D SVM method, the DC link voltage can be reduced by 16% compared with the split DC link capacitor topology and the output distortion can also be reduced under the unbalanced load condition.
Generally, a voltage difference exists between the reference and the output voltagesin a pulse width modulated (PWM) voltage source inverter (VSI). In this paper, the nonlinearity in a PWM VSI is analyzed and a new on-line estimation method in consideration of parameter variations for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is proposed to compensate the time varying voltage distortion.
In this paper. the design procedure of the inverter output filter is described. The transfer function of the filter output voltage to the load current is described with the capacitor value and the system time constant including the controller. This means that the relation between the filter capacitor value and the system time constant is given as the closed form. By using the above closed form. the capacitor value can be calculated with the system time constant which can be implemented practically not using the try and error method. And as the effect of the load current to the voltage distortion can be calculated from the closed form, it can be verified how much the voltage distortion is effected when the nonlinear load is connected.
Nonlinear loads change the sinusoidal nature of the ac power current, thereby resulting in the flow of harmonic currents in the ac power system that can cause interference with communication circuits and other type of equipment. To minimize the damage, it is needed to limit harmonics current and voltage. Harmonic measurement system was developed to measure individual voltage and current harmonic continuously and save harmonic data on computer. We measured all 154kV feeders in a steel making company substation. Voltage and current distortion limits for general transmission systems was suggested We found some feeders exceeded current distortion limits. As result voltage harmonic exceeded standard limits.
