In this paper, an optimal approach for the wide-area regulation of control devices in a transmission network is proposed. In order to realize an improved voltage profile and reduced power loss, existing devices such as tap-changing transformers, synchronous machines, and capacitor banks should be controlled in a coordinated and on-line manner. It is well-understood that phasor measurement units in transmission substations allow the system operators to access the on-line loading and operation status of the network. Accordingly, this study proposes efficient software applications that can be employed in area operation centers. Thus, the implanted control devices can be regulated in an on-line and wide-area coordinated approach. In this process, efficient objective functions are devised for both voltage profile improvement and power loss reduction. Subsequently, sensitivity analysis is carried out to determine the best weighting factors for these objectives. Extensive numerical studies are conducted on an IEEE 14-bus test system and a real-world system named the Azarbayjan Regional Transmission Network. The obtained results are discussed in detail to highlight the promising improvements.
This paper presents the improvement of the voltage profiles of power system networks by the inclusion of Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC). The mathematical model of the UPFC is incorporated in the load flow algorithm and the L-index is calculated for the different values of the control parameter r $and{\gamma}$. The positioning of the UPFC device is changed to minimize the sum of the squares of the L-indices at all load buses. The test cases considered for the improvement of voltage profile with the WSCC 9-bus and IEEE 30 bus system. With the best position of UPFC along with the control parameters the improvement in voltage profile of the power system networks are obtained. The results obtained are quite encouraging compared with other techniques used to identify the best location of UPFC.
In this study, to develop angle ring pressboards for high voltage transformers, the radius and thickness are modified under the conditions of temperature and humidity. In particular, a pressboard with a thickness of 6 mm and a radius at the angled part were investigated based on the simulation of the principal stress from the angled optimization profile shape. As a result, by the appropriate application of a higher temperature, the solid insulation can be improved to reduce the moisture content for an optimized profile angle of a high voltage transformer. This also results in the improvement of the safety factor by 25%. It is determined that the electrical insulation properties of pressboards in high voltage transformers can be enhanced by improving their properties.
In this paper the integration of Distributed Generation (DG) in radial distribution system is investigated by computing the optimal site and size of DG to be placed. An analytical expression based on equivalent current injection has been derived by utilizing topological structure of radial distribution system to find optimal size of DG to minimize losses. In the presented formulation, the optimal DG placement is obtained without repeatedly computing the load flow. The proposed formulation can be used to find the optimal size of all types of DGs namely Type-I, Type-II, Type-III and Type-IV DGs. The investigations are carried out on IEEE 33-bus and 69-bus radial distribution systems. The optimal DG placement results into reduction in active and reactive power losses and improvement in voltage profile of the buses.
This paper presents a scheme for the interconnection of dispersed generator systems(DGs) based on load .unbalance and load model in composite distribution systems. Groups of each individual load model consist of residential, industrial, commercial, official and agricultural load. The unbalance is involved with many single-phase line segment. . Voltage profile improvement and system loss minimization by installation of DGs depend greatly on how they are placed and operated in the distribution systems. So, DGs can reduce distribution real power losses and replace large-scale generators if they are placed appropriately in the distribution systems. The main idea of solving fuzzy goal programming is to transform the original objective function and constraints into the equivalent multi-objectives functions with fuzzy sets to evaluate their imprecise nature for the criterion of power loss minimization, the number or total capacity of DGs and the bus voltage deviation, and then solve the problem using genetic algorithm. The method proposed is applied to IEEE 13 bus and 34 bus test systems to demonstrate its effectiveness.
This paper presents an optimization method which determines locations and size of capacitors simultaneously while minimizing power losses and improving voltage profile in radial distribution systems. Especially, the cost function associated with capacitor placement is considered as step function due to banks of standard discrete capacities. Genetic algorithms(GA) are used to obtain efficiently the solution of the cost function associated with capacitors which is non-continuous and non-differentiable function. The strings in GA consist of the node number index and size of capacitors to be installed. The length mutation operator, which is able to change the length of strings in each generation, is used. The proposed method which determines locations and size of capacitors simultaneously can reduce power losses and improve' voltage profile with capacitors of minimum size. Its efficiency is proved through the application in radial distribution systems.
The voltage profile during discharge of the zinc air battery has very flat pattern until reach to end of discharge voltage. But, when zinc air battery is discharged by high current, the discharge voltage and energy becomes low. Therefore, we focused on effects of catalyst size to solve this problems by increasing active sites of oxygen reduction reaction. The size of catalyst was reduced from 27 to l${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and we examined average discharge voltage, capacity, energy, resistance and characteristics during GSM pulse discharge of zinc air battery with change of current density. And we also measured porosity of the cathode according to the ASTM. So we have got improvement of average discharge voltage and energy when catalyst was minimized and we have got optimum size of catalyst at 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$.
The voltage profile of Zinc/Air battery during discharge has very flat pattern in a given voltage range, But, if not enough the porosity in cathode, as a result of that capacity, energy and discharge voltage of batteries become low. Therefore, we focused the pore effects in activated carbon for cathode. We examined discharge voltage, specific capacity, specific energy, resistance and characteristics during the GSM pulse discharge upon different kinds of activated carbon in Zinc/Air battery, Also we measured porosity of the air cathode according to the ASTM. So we achieved improvement of specific capacity, specific energy and discharge voltage according to increase meso pores of activated carbon. We found the optimized activated carbon material for Zinc/Air battery.
