  • Several volcanic activities have continued in Mt. Baekdu since the Millennium eruption, and these phenomena have increased the need for volcanic activity surveillance. Various geophysical approaches are needed to obtain the depth and size of magma chamber that lie several kilometers below the surface. We examined the applicability of direct-current resistivity survey in this study. In order to explore the deep magma chamber of Mt. Baekdu, which has a spatial limitation due to the borderline, a large-scale survey with a length of tens of kilometers should be conducted. This type of survey requires a distributed measurement system and optimized exploration designs. Therefore, we propose survey designs taking advantage of our developed distributed acquisition system and analyze the applicability using numerical simulation. We confirmed that our designs that use single survey line with offline transmitting points show comparable results to the conventional 3D survey. It is expected that our research result can contribute to the deep geophysical exploration in Mt. Baekdu.

  • Mineral composition and chemistry of the clay minerals in the three cores from the continental shelves of South Shetland Islands (NCS09) and Anberse Island (GC98-2), and from the fjord of King George Island (A10-01) were determined by X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe analysis in search of the distributions and origin of the clay minerals in the Antarctic marine sediments. Smectite content is relatively high in NCS09 regardless of core depths (av. 8.3%), but low in GC98-2 (1.1%). In Al0-01, smectite content is higher in the upper section than in the lower section. Kaolinite was not detected from all the cores in this study Yellow to yellowish green clay granules were commonly scattered in the sediments of NCS09 cores. The clays contain 16.97% and 2.53% $Fe_2$$O_3$$K_2$O. Average structural formula of the clay indicates ferrian beidellite . The (Fe, K)-rich smectite of NSC09 must have been derived from relatively young basaltic volcanics altered by reaction with seawater near Shetland Islands by glacial erosion or eolian process related to volcanic eruption. GC98-2 nearer to Antarctic continent is very low in smectite content. In A10-01, the lower diamicton was deposited from the glacial erosion of smectite-free ancient volcanics in the interior of King George Island, while the upper section was derived from the smectite-bearing terrestrial debris and eolian materials after retreat of glaciers in Marian Cove and ice cover in Barton Peninsula. Thehigh K contents of smectites suggest the interstratification of illite and smectite layers, which might be observed by future TEM lattice fringe imaging.

  • The axial seamount basalts in the P3 segment of the Phoenix Ridge were obtained from dredging and the K-Ar age determination and whole-rock geochemical analyses have been done for understanding their origin. The K-Ar ages for PRS basalts sampled from 1,000m below sea level are 2.6-2.2 Ma and those for PR3 basalts from 800m are 1.6-1.5 Ma. The younger ages towards the crest of the seamount indicate that this submarine volcano has been grown by central eruptions. The youngest age of about 1.5 Ma for PR3 basalts corresponds to the final eruption period of this volcano. The seamount basalts contain small amounts of normative quartz and olivine. They have transitional geochemical nature between alkaline- and subalkaline-series basalts. Trace and rare earth elements compositions of the seamount basalts are very similar to those of ocean island basalts (OIB), and indicate that this seamount has been formed by a hotspot activity, not in association with a seafloor spreading. The melting degree from the source has decreased with time, and finally the volcanic activity has stopped when the basaltic magma reached mild alkaline composition.

  • Using monthly total ozone data obtained from a Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS) onboard the Nimbus-7 and Earth Probe satellite, this study examined the trend in the total amount of global ozone during two periods: from 1979-1992 [Early period] and 1997-2002 [Latter period]. The Annual average of total ozone during the Early period was globally reduced by about 10 DU compared to the amount during the Latter, except in some areas between the equator and 20 N. Global trends of total ozone showed a decrease of -6.30 DU/decade during 1979-1992, and an increase of 0.12 DU/decade during 1997-2002. Its enhancement during the Latter period was especially noticeable in tropical areas. The EOF analyses of total ozone from this period indicated signs of temporal/spatial variability, associated with the phenomena of Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO), Quasi-Triennial Oscillation (QTO), El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO), and volcanic eruption. Seasonal profiles of tropospheric ozone in the tropics obtained from ozonesondes, showed the spatial pattern of zonal wavenumber one. Overall, this study may be useful in analyzing possible causes in the variations of statospheric and tropospheric ozone.

  • Mineral chemistry and stable isotope compositions of sericites from the Sangdong mine in the Kimhae area, Kyungsangnamdo, were studied. The Sangdong sericite deposit occurs in rhyolitic tuff of late Cretaceous age and considers to have been fonned by the hydrothennal alteration. The sericites are classified as $2M_1$ polytype and are characterized by less celadonite substitution indicating muscovite-phengite series. Their compositions are very close to that of the ideal muscovite but net layer charge ranges 1.71~1.91 which is less than 2 per formula unit of ideal muscovite. Predominant interlayer cation is K and K/(K+Na) ratio ranges 0.91 and 0.93. ${\delta}^{18}O$ values of sericites and quartz separated from the ore range 7.70~9.07 and 8.20~10.87‰, respectively. The formation temperature of sericite can be estimated as $315{\sim}340^{\circ}C$( based on ${\delta}^{18}O$ value of sericite and ${\delta}D$ value of of Cretaceous meteoric water. Their formation temperature discrepancy between coexisting sericite and quartz indicates that they are in isotopically inequilibrium. Two types of quartz, coarse grained phenocrysts and micrcrystalline aggregates are observed and the former must have been formed during volcanic eruption and remained isotopically unexchanged during hydrothermal alteration period. ${\delta}^{14}S$ values of pyrites range 1.9~4.5‰ which is within a range of volcanogenic sulfur, indicating magmatic source.

  • We studied the source mechanisms of very-long-period event recorded at seismic station WIZ near White Island Volcano, New Zealand on August 4, 2012. Since seismic data at only one station were available, we conducted moment tensor inversion using three simplified models (explosion, crack, and pipe models). To constrain the moment tensor solution of seismic event, we computed synthetic data for each model to compare with observed data. Type and orientation for the best model is a crack at a depth of 1600 m with a dip of $80^{\circ}NE$ and a strike of $N80^{\circ}W$. We interpret that a deep explosion may have opened a crack for gases to escape, and the upward gas flow triggered the surface explosions four hours later as confirmed by a webcam. The interpretation based on moment tensor inversion is consistent with previous studies of geochemical data of the volcanic island.

  • STEP Cube Lab-II (Cube Laboratory for Space Technology Experimental Project-II) is a 6U Cube satellite equipped with optical and infrared cameras for monitoring Mt. Paektu volcanic eruption signs and earth observation in the Korean peninsula. To guarantee successful mission operation of the cube satellite in orbit, thermal design is essential for the electronic equipment, and must be kept within the allowable temperature range during the mission period. Thus, it is necessary to analyze the predictable orbital thermal environment. The STEP Cube Lab-II is launched through the KSLV-II, however, the operation orbit has not been determined due to the unknown launch time. In this study, we performed a thermal analysis of the satellite and investigated the heat flux according to launch time to analyze the worst orbital conditions that could occur.

  • In order to investigate interannual variation of total ozone and reflectivity over the globe, Nimbus-7/TOMS data were used on the monthly mean and its anomaly for the period of 1979-92. This study also examined MSU channel 4(Ch4; lower-stratosphere) brightness temperature data and two model reanalyses of NCEP and GEOS to compare the ozone variation with atmospheric thermal condition. In addition, the MSU channel 1(Ch1 ; lower-troposphere) brightness temperature was used to compare with the reflectivity. The ozone showed strong annual cycle with downward trend(-6.3${\pm}$0.6 DU/decade) over the globe, and more distinct response to volcanic eruption than El Ni${\tilde{n}$o. The relationship between total ozone and MSU Ch4 observation, and between the ozone and model reanalyses of lower stratosphere temperature showed positive correlation(0.2-0.7) during the period of 1980-92. Reflectivity increased interannually by 0.2${\pm}$0.06%/decade over the globe during the above period and reflected El Ni${\tilde{n}$o(1982-83, 1991-92) well. Its variability in annual cycle was remarkably smaller in tropics than in higher latitudes. This is inferred due to cloud suppression and tropical upwelling regions. Reflectivity correlated negatively(-0.9) to the Ch1 temperature over the globe, but positively(0.2) over tropical ocean. The positive value over the ocean results from the effect of microwave emissivity which increases the Ch1 temperature with enhanced hydrometeor activity. Significant correlations between total ozone and the Ch4 temperature, and between reflectivity and the Ch1 Suggest that the TOMS data may use valuably to better understand the feedback mechanism of climate change.

  • Jeju island is the biggest volcanic island in Korea and there are over 455 Quaternary monogenetic volcanoes, of which approximately 373 volcanoes(82.0%) are cinder cones. Other volcanic forms in the island include sharp-pointed lava cone without crater(9 volcanoes; 2.0%), shield volcanoes(27 volcanoes; 5.9%), tuff rings(17 volcanoes; 3.7%), tuff cones(3 volcanoes; 0.7%), a maar(1 volcano; 0.2%) and lava domes(25 volcanoes; 5.5%). The monogenetic volcanoes include 15 small nested cinder cones(aloreum). The monogenetic volcanoes are more abundant in the eastern part of the island than in the western part. If the main cause of the weathering such as precipitation affected the shape of the monogenetic volcanoes, more monogenetic volcanoes(BC, CC, DC, etc.) are supposed to be present in the southern part that have more precipitation than in the northern part. But the distribution of the monogenetic volcanoes shows no difference between the southern and the northern parts. So we suggest that the difference of the climatic conditions did not affect the distribution or the shape of cinder cones. Tuff rings, tuff cones and a maar are distributed beneath the island or in the low-altitude areas along the shore although cinder cones are distributed in the interior of the island. This means that the volcanic activity which formed the monogenetic volcanoes resulted from either phreatomagmatic eruption or magmatic (hawaiian or strombolian) eruptions depending on the reaction with water (underground water or shallow waters). The distribution of the monogenetic volcanoes according to the altitude shows that 253(55.6%) volcanoes occur in low-lying coastal areas at an altitude below 300 m, 110(24.2%) in a middle mountainous area at an altitude between 300~600 m and 92(20.2%) in a high mountainous area at an altitude above 600 m. So more than half of monogenetic volcanoes are distributed in low-lying coastal areas.

  • Located on Java subduction zone, Merapi volcano is an active stratovolcano with a volcanic activity cycle of 1-5 years. Merapi's eruptions were relatively small with VEI 1-3. However, the most recent eruption occurred in 2010 was quite violent with VEI 4 and 386 people were killed. In this study, we have attempted to study the characteristics of Merapi's eruptions during 18 years using optical Landsat images. We have collected a total of 55 Landsat images acquired from July 6, 1994 to September 1, 2012 to identify pyroclastic flows and their temporal changes from false color images. To extract areal extents of pyroclastic flows, we have performed supervised classification after atmospheric correction by using COST model. As a result, the extracted dimensions of pyroclastic flows are nearly identical to the CVP monthly reports. We have converted the thermal band of Landsat TM and ETM+ to the surface temperature using NASA empirical formula and calculated time-series of the mean surface temperature in the area of peak temperature surrounding the crater. The mean surface temperature around the crater repeatedly showed the tendency to rapidly rise before eruptions and cool down after eruptions. Although Landsat satellite images had some limitations due to weather conditions, these images were useful tool to observe the precursor changes in surface temperature before eruptions and map the pyroclastic flow deposits after eruptions at Merapi volcano.
