  • The present study focused on the effects of peel contact on the volatile compounds of orange wines. The volatile compounds were analyzed by sensory and instrumental analyses. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) was used for extraction of volatile compounds. A total of 19 and 27 volatile compounds were identified in without and with peel contact wines respectively. Esters were quantitatively the dominant group of volatile compounds in without peel contact wines, while terpenes were the most abundant compounds in peel contact wines. Totally 11 and 14 new formed compounds were found in without and with peel contact wines, mainly were esters, alcohols, and acids. According to sensory analysis, the peel contact wine showed a more citrus-like and fruity aroma than the wines without peel contact.

  • Antimicrobial activity and chemical composition of volatile flavor extracts from Agastache rugosa were investigated. The volatile flavor extracts were obtained from leaves and stems of Agastache rugosa by simultaneous distillation extraction (SDE) method. Antimicrobial activity was investigated by disc diffusion and broth dilution methods against several microorganisms of Bacillus cereus, bacillus megaterium, Bacillus subtilis, Corynebacterium xerosis, Staphylo coccus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Agrobacterium rhizogenes , Agrobacterium tumefaciences, Enterobacter cloacae, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Candida utilis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Volatile flavor extractsfrom leaves have strong antimicrobial activity against C.utilis and S.cerevisiae. When 0.12% volatile flavor extracts from fresh leaves were included in the medium, lag phase of C. utilis was extended 6 hr and that of S.utilis and S.cerevisiae was extended 2hr. Further analyses were performed to elucidatethe effective component of the extracts. The major component of volatile flavor was estragole, a phenolic compound. Minor components were determined to be terpenes , alcohols, acids , esters, ketones and aldethydes.

  • Volatile compounds in Omangdungi (Styela plicata)-Doenjang (soybean paste) stew were analyzed using solvent-assisted flavor evaporation/gas chromatography/mass-selective detection/olfactometry (SAFE/GC/MSD/O) and aroma extract dilution analysis (AEDA). The GC/O analysis detected 37 volatile compounds, of which 32 were positively identified, and included 9 aldehydes, 5 alcohols, 4 aromatic hydrocarbons, 4 ketones, 3 esters, 3 N-containing compounds, 2 acids, 1 S-containing compound, and 1 furan. Nine aroma-active odorants ($\log_3FD{\geq}3.0$) in the sample included six compounds derived from Doenjang (3-methyl(thio)propanal, tetramethylpyrazine, 4-vinyl-2-methoxyphenol, 2-acetylpyrrole, butyric acid, and 2-methoxyphenol) and three compounds from Omangdungi (2-acetyl-2-thiazoline, 9-decanol, and 6-decenol). Three compounds derived from Omangdungi (9-decanol, 6-decenol, and 6-nonenol) were thought to enhance the seafood-like flavor of Omangdungi-Doenjang stew.

  • Indirect $CO_2$ effect due to non-methane volatile organic compound (NMVOC) emissions from solvent and product use and fugitive NMVOC emissions from fuels in the Republic of Korea and 13 Annex I countries under United Nations Framework on Climate Change were estimated and the proportions of them to total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions ranged from 0.092% to 0.45% in 2006. Indirect greenhouse effect ($CO_2$, $CH_4$, and $O_3$) were estimated at 13 photochemical assessment monitoring sites in the Republic of Korea using concentrations of 8 NMVOCs of which indirect global warming potential (GWP) were available. The contribution of toluene to mixing ratio was highest at 11 sites and however, the contribution of toluene to indirect greenhouse effect was highest at nine sites. In contrast to toluene, the contributions of ethane, butane, and ethylene were enhanced. The indirect greenhouse effects of ethane and propane, of which ozone formation potentials are the lowest and the third lowest respectively among targeted 10 NMVOCs, ranked first and fourth highest respectively. Acetaldehyde has relatively higher maximum incremental reactivity and is classified as probable human carcinogen however, its indirect GWP ranked second lowest.

  • VOCs (Volatile Organic Compound) sensors were fabricated using $SnO_2$nanowires-based thin films and its gas sensing behaviors were studied. The $SnO_2$ nanowires synthesized from a thermal evaporation process were dispersed in a solution and the sensor film was prepared by dropping the slurry on the substrate with the electrodes and an embedded heater. The gas response (Ra/Rg, Ra: resistance in air, Rg: resistance in gas) to $30{\sim}40$ ppm Benzene, Ethyl Benzene, o-xylene were in the range of $39{\sim}42$, which were significantly higher than those to 50 ppm of CO, $CH_4$ and $C_3H_8$ ($12{\sim}19$).

  • $TiO_2$ possesses great photocatalytic properties but absorbs only UV light owing to high band gap energy (Eg = 3.2 eV). By narrowing the band gap through doping a metal ion, the photocatalytic activity can be enhanced in condition of the light of a higher than 365 nm wavelength. Main purpose for this study is to evaluate the activities of metal doped $TiO_2$ for degrading the volatile organic compounds (VOCs); p-xylene is chosen in the VOC removal test. Vanadium is selected in this study because an ionic radius of vanadium is almost the same as titanium ion and vanadium can be easily doped into $TiO_2$. V-doped $TiO_2$ was synthesized by sol-gel methods and compared with pure $TiO_2$. Pure TiO2 powder and V-doped $TiO_2$ powder were coated on glasses by spray coating method. UV-Visible spectrophotometer was used for the measurement of the band gap changes. VOC concentration degradation level was tested with using various UV light sources in an enclosed chamber. Catalytic activities of prepared samples were evaluated based on the experimental results and compared with coated pure $TiO_2$ sample.

  • Biogenic Volatile Organic Compound (BVOC) emissions are estimated with BEIS3.12 (Biogenic Emissions Inventory System version 3.12) over the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) and then used in CMAQ (Community Multiscale Air Quality) simulations for two high ozone episodes in 2004 and 2007 June. The first- and second-order sensitivity coefficients of ozone to BVOC emissions are estimated with High-order Decoupled Direct Method (HDDM) simulation in order to estimate the influence of BVOC emissions on ozone using the Zero-Out Contribution (ZOC) approach. ZOC analysis shows that relative contribution of BVOC emissions on daily maximum 1-hr ozone is as high as 30% for high ozone days above 100 ppb. However simulated isoprene concentrations were over-estimated by a factor of 2 when compared to the observations at the PAMS (Photochemical Air Monitoring Station) for the 2007 episode. When assumed that actual BVOC emissions are 50% less than estimated, the ZOC of BVOC emissions on daily maximum ozone drops by more than 10 ppb for the episode. The result indicates that uncertainty in BVOC emissions may have significant impact on high ozone prediction in the SMA.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to confirm the characteristics of oral malodor patients by evaluating the differences of salivary flow rate, secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) level in saliva between the patient and control groups, and the correlation with the tongue coating, volatile sulfur compound (VSC), salivary flow rate and sIgA level in saliva in the patients group. Methods : Forty-seven patients with oral malodor and twenty healthy volunteers were included in this study. Their tongue coating was assessed with the Winkel tongue coating index, and salivary flow rate, sIgA concentrations in saliva and the level of VSC in oral cavity were measured. Results : There were no significant differences of the salivary flow rate and the sIgA level in saliva between the patient and control groups, but there was a significant relationship between the accumulation of tongue coating and the level of VSC in oral cavity. Conclusions : Our results suggest that tongue coating is closely related to oral malodor, but further studies are needed to confirm the relationship between tongue coating and sIgA level in saliva.

  • This study has been numerically conducted to investigate the removal efficiency of Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) in photocatalytic micro-reactor. This study has placed emphasis on the improvements of the working condition of photocatalytic micro-reactor. The micro-reactor consists of 19 microchannels with a rectangular cross-section. For the validation of the current numerical study, a computation has been carried out to simulate an existing experimental study on the cylindrical reactor, which has shown a good agreement. The degradation characteristics with different inlet concentrations and velocities have been obtained. The current results can be used for the design of advanced photocatalytic micro-reactor.
