This study is related to the surface subsidence due to the collapse of a underground void during earthquakes. The amount of the settlement due to the collapse of a underground void will depend on the depth of the void, the initial condition of unit weight of sand, the size and type of foundation, the strength of earthquake, the size of a void, etc. The purpose of the paper is to estimate the amount of the subsidence, analyse the factors affecting the subsidence, and develop a program determining the probability of the damages to structures in terms of absolute and differential settlement and rotational settlement. On the base of the results obtained in this study, when the depth of a void is constant and the width of the void increases, the change of the subsidence factor due to the angle of internal friction and the actual effective factor of the void become smaller than that due to the unit weight of sand deposits. In the same condition, the probabilities of damages due to the absolute and differential settlement increase, and those due to the rotational settlement decrease.
This paper presents methods for analyzing the extent of cylindrical-shaped void closure. In addition, a quantitative relationship between change in void fraction and height reduction ratio of a compressed specimen is proposed. The height reduction ratio, number of deformation steps and billet rotation were chosen as key process parameters influencing the void closing behavior, namely, the changes in void shape and size during hot open die forging of a large ingot. The extent of void closure was analyzed from microscopic observations and estimated from tensile test results. The tensile strengths of specimens with closed voids and those without were compared for various reduction ratios in height. The results confirmed that void closure occurs at reduction ratios greater than 30 %. The void closing behavior could be expressed as a hyperbolic tangent function of reduction ratio in height, number of paths, and billet rotation. The knowledge presented in this paper could be helpful for optimizing deformation paths in open die forging processes.
In order to predict the internal void closing behavior in open die forging process, multiple scale modeling has been developed and applied. The huge size difference between ingot and inner void makes it almost impossible to simultaneously model the actual loading conditions and the void shape. Multiple scale modeling is designed to integrate macro- and micro- models effectively and efficiently. The void closing behavior was simulated at 39 different locations in a large ingot during upsetting and cogging. The correlation between the closing behavior and variables such as effective plastic strain and maximum compressive strain was studied in order to find an efficient measure for predicting the soundness of the forging.
The effect of non-plastic fines (silt) on liquefaction and pore pressure generation characteristics of saturated sands was studied through undrained stress controlled cyclic triaxial tests using cylindrical specimens of size 50 mm diameter and height 100 mm at different cyclic stress ratios and at a frequency of 0.1 Hz. The tests were carried out in the laboratory adopting various measures of sample density through various approaches namely gross void ratio approach, relative density approach, sand skeleton void ratio approach, and interfine void ratio approach. The limiting silt content and the relative density of a specimen were found to influence the undrained cyclic response of sand-silt mixtures to a great extent. Undrained cyclic response was observed to be independent of silt content at very high relative densities. However, the presence of fines significantly influenced this response of loose to medium dense specimens. Combined analyses of cyclic resistance have been done using the entire data collected from all the approaches.

In order to study the toughening mechanism of rubber modified polycarbonate, the sequence of development of micro-voids was investigated by real-time small angle X-ray scattering with Synchrotron radiation (SR-SAXS). The used test method was wedge test. The scattering intensity increases with increasing penetration depth of wedge, i.e. applied strain. The increase is due to the micro-void formation during deformation. This micro-void was uniformly developed in matrix and was different from large-void due to internal cavitation of rubber particle and/or debonding between rubber particle and polycarbonate matrix. The micro-void was developed at the critical strain and the radius of micro-void is around $600{\AA}$. Above the critical strain the size of micro-void remains almost constant with increasing applied strain. However, the population of micro-void increased with applied strain.

In this study, a new methodology by using the X-ray CT scan is proposed for estimating void ratio of very fine clayey soil. Since the particle size of the clay is too fine to calculate the volume of void inside the clays, CT scanning tests with a number of clay specimens that were artificially set to have various designated void ratios have been carried out. From the tests, a relationship between the CT values and void ratios is given to be used for estimating the invisible void ratio of very fine clay from a representative CT value scanned. The linear relationship was able to be acquired finally. It is expected that micro X-ray CT scanning can be capable of capturing the void ratio of very fine soils without any errors inherent in the conventional specific gravity tests.
The containment filtered venting system (CFVS) filters the atmosphere of the containment building and discharges a part of it to the outside environment to prevent containment overpressure during severe accidents. The Korean CFVS has a tank that filters fission products from the containment atmosphere by pool scrubbing, which is the primary decontamination process; however, prediction of its performance has been done based on researches conducted under mild conditions than those of severe accidents. Bubble behavior in a pool is a key parameter of pool scrubbing. Therefore, the bubble behavior in the pool was analyzed under various injection flow rates observed at the venturi nozzles used in the Korean CFVS using a wire-mesh sensor. Based on the experimental results, void fraction model was modified using the existing correlation, and a new bubble size prediction model was developed. The modified void fraction model agreed well with the obtained experimental data. However, the newly developed bubble size prediction model showed different results to those established in previous studies because the venturi nozzle diameter considered in this study was larger than those in previous studies. Therefore, this is the first model that reflects actual design of a venturi scrubbing nozzle.
We investigate the properties of galaxies belonging to the filaments in cosmic void regions, using the void catalogue constructed by Pan et al. (2012) from the SDSS DR7. To identify galaxy filaments within a void, voids with 30 or more galaxies are selected as a sample. We identify 3067 filaments in 1050 voids by applying the filament finding algorithm based on minimal spanning tree and reducing processes to spatial distribution of the void galaxies. We study the correlations between galaxy properties and the specific size of filament which quantifies the degree of the filament straightness. For example, the average magnitude and the magnitude of the faintest galaxy in filament decrease as the straightness of the filament increases. We also find that the correlations become stronger in rich filaments than in poor ones with fewer member galaxies. We discuss a physical explanation to our findings and their cosmological implications.
The subchannel grade void distributions in the NUPEC (Nuclear Power Engineering Corporation) BFBT (BWR Full-Size Fine-Mesh Bundle Tests) facility were evaluated with the subchannel analysis code MATRA and the system code MARS. Fifteen test series from five different test bundles were selected for an analysis of the steady-state subchannel void distributions. Two transient cases, a turbine trip without a bypass as a typical power transient and a re-circulation pump trip as a flow transient, were also chosen for this analysis. It was found that the steady-state void distributions calculated by both the MATRA and MARS codes coincided well with the measured data in the range of thermodynamic qualities from 5% to 25%. The results of the transient calculations were also similar and were highly feasible. However, the computational aspects of the two codes were clearly different.

An experimental investigation has been conducted to determine the flow pattern for two-component , two-phase mixtures which flow vertically upwards in concentric annuli based on the measurement for the local void fraction and the distribution of the local void fraction in various radial locations in the annular gap. The annular test section consists of a lucite outer tube whose inside diameter is 38mm and a stainless steel rod, The rod diameter is either :2mm,16mm or 20mm. It is demonstrated that the probability density function of the fluctuations in void fraction may be used as an flow pattern indicator and the local void fraction distribution depends on the flow pattern and radial location in the annular passage.
