  • The radar method based non-destruction inspection stands in the spotlight of concrete tunnel lining due to the advantages of less restrictions of applicability, simpleness and quickness. However, in the case of utilizing at constructions, the decomposition ability is decreased because the effect of damping and dispersion is potent and the utilization of high frequency is difficult. In particular, it is very difficult to investigate the size and thickness of tunnel using the low frequency radar with low decomposition ability In this work, to resolve the above problems, the effect of arrangement between adjacent tunnels is investigated utilizing the low frequency radar and results are reported

  • As a promising and novel manufacturing technology, laser aided direct metal deposition (DMD) process produces near-net-shape functional metal parts directly from 3-D CAD models by repeating laser cladding layer by layer. The key of the build-up mechanism is the effective control of powder delivery and laser power to be irradiated into the melt-pool. A feedback control system using two sets of optical height sensors is designed for monitoring the melt-pool and real-time control of deposition dimension. With the feedback height control system, the dimensions of part can be controlled within designed tolerance maintaining real time control of each layer thickness. Clad nugget shapes reveal that the feedback control can affect the nugget size and morphology of microstructure. The pore/void level can be controlled by utilizing pulsed-mode laser and proper design of deposition tool-path. With the present configuration of the control system, it is believed that more innovation of the DMD process is possible to the deposition of layers in 3-D slice.

  • We report progress on identifying cosmic voids using cluster halos as the antipode. According to the standard scenario of structure formation, clusters are expected to form at peaks of the initial density field, whereas cosmic voids form at troughs. Then, a cluster would be a void if the sign of the initial density fluctuation of the universe were inverted. To study the relevance of anti-structures of clusters to cosmic voids, we use a pair of simulations whose initial density fields are sign inverted versions to each other. By examining the spatial distribution and environment of the particles in inverted simulation, which are the member particles of clusters in the other simulation, we discuss the characteristics of the antipode structures of clusters including their size, density, internal structure, and redshift evolution as well.

  • This study aimed at investigating quasi-static and dynamic torsional deformation behavior of three API X70 and X80 linepipe steels. Quasi-static and dynamic torsional tests were conducted on these steels. having different grain sizes and volume fractions of acicular ferrite and polygonal ferrite, using a torsional Kolsky bar. The test data were then compared via microstructures and adiabatic shear band formation,. The dynamic torsional test results indicated that the steels rolled in the single phase region had higher maximum shear stress than the steel rolled in the two phase region, because the microstructures of the steel rolled in the single phase region were composed mainly of acicular ferrites. In the X80 steel rolled in the single phase region, the increased dynamic torsional properties could be explained by a decrease in the overall effective grain size due to the presence of acicular ferrite having smaller effective grain size. The possibility of adiabatic shear band formation was analyzed from the energy required for void initiation and variation in effective grain size.

  • Ultrasonic investigation of damage detection has been widely used for non-destructive testing of various concrete structures. This study focuses on damage detection analysis with the aid of wave propagation in two-phase composite concrete with aggregate (inclusion) and mortar (matrix). To fabricate a realistic simulation model containing a variety of irregular aggregate shapes, the mesh generation technique using an image processing technique was proposed. Initially, the domains and boundaries of the aggregates were extracted from the digital image of a typical concrete cut-section. This enables two different domains: aggregates and mortar in heterogeneous concrete sections, and applied the grids onto these domains to discretize the model. Subsequently, finite element meshes are generated in terms of spatial and temporal requirements of the model size. For improved analysis results, all meshes are designed to be quadrilateral type, and an additional process is conducted to improve the mesh quality. With this simulation model, wave propagation analyses were conducted with a central frequency of 75 kHz of the Mexican hat incident wave. Several void damages, such as needle-shaped cracks and void-shaped holes, were artificially introduced in the model. Finally, various formats of internal damage were detected by implementing energy mapping based signal processing.

  • Development of the packaging is one of the critical issues for commercialization of the RF-MEMS devices. RF MEMS package should be designed to have small size, hermetic protection, good RF performance and high reliability. In addition, packaging should be conducted at sufficiently low temperature. In this paper, a low temperature hermetic wafer level packaging scheme for the RF-MEMS devices is presented. For hermetic sealing, Au-Sn eutectic bonding technology at the temperature below $300{\times}C$ is used. Au-Sn multilayer metallization with a square loop of $70{\mu}m$ in width is performed. The electrical feed-through is achieved by the vertical through-hole via filled with electroplated Cu. The size of the MEMS Package is $1mm\times1mm\times700{\mu}m$. By applying $O_2$ plasma ashing and fabrication process optimization, we can achieve the void-free structure within the bonding interface as well as via hole. The shear strength and hermeticity of the package satisfy the requirements of MIL-STD-883F. Any organic gases or contamination are not observed inside the package. The total insertion loss for the packaging is 0.075 dB at 2 GHz. Furthermore, the robustness of the package is demonstrated by observing no performance degradation and physical damage of the package after several reliability tests.

  • Physical properties and textural parameters of thirty-five piston tore samples recovered from the southeastern coast of Korea (Korea Strait), were investigated using the autopycnometer. The physical properties (porosity, water content, wet bulk density, dry bulk density, gram density, and void ratio) were measured at rather uniform intervals along each core. Sediment texture (grain size, sand, silt, and clay contents) was also measured at the same subbottom depth. The measured and calculated results are; mean grain size $0.57\~8.09\phi(average:3.67\phi)$, porosity $26\~81\%\;(average:\;55\%)$, water content $16.7\~61.4\%(average:\;31.6\%)$, wet bulk density $1.37\~2.18g/cm^3\;(average:\;1.85g/cm^3)$, dry bulk density $2.55\~3.11g/cm^3\;(average:\;2.35g/cm^3)$, grain density $2.40\~3.10g/cm^3\;(average:\;2.85g/cm^3)$, and void ratio $0.56\~2.54$ (average: 0.94). The sediment texture generally coincides well with the bathymetry indicating the influence of Pleistocene-Holocene sea level changes. Also the contours of physical properties are closely related to the sediment texture. Fluctuation of physical properties are similar to the textural variation. It seems that sediment texture is a significant factor in determining physical property in this study area.
