The purpose of this study was to develop a Korean assessment model for the patients with voice disorders. Interviews were conducted with 4 voice therapists and the results were analyzed by using a qualitative, constant-comparative design. According to the three themes emerged from the qualitative analysis, 10 subthemes were derived. The three main themes were 1) consideration on the disordered voice, 2) status quo of instrumental and perceptual evaluation, and 3) suggestions for the other voice therapists. The 10 subthemes can be summarized as the following: 1) judgment centering on the patients, 2) increase of the reliability of instrumental and perceptual evaluation, 3) voice therapists' positive participation in the assessment procedure of voice disorder.
The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of voice improvement when vocal training, which relaxes the vocal contact, is applied to children with vocal nodules. Subjects included 20 5- to 12-year-old boys with vocal nodules in Otolaryngology and for whom voice therapy had been advised. The vocal therapy was conducted for 40 minutes per a week for a total of eight times. Results were evaluated by videostroboscopy, auditory-perceptual evaluation of GRBAS Scale, aerodynamic test, and acoustic analysis before and after therapy. As a result, first, the size of vocal nodules was reduced and the unstable pattern of vocal contact was improved. Glottic closure was increased and Phase symmetry was decreased during vocal vibration. Mucosal wave was increased and muscle tension of the larynx was reduced. Second, auditory-perceptual evaluation showed that subjects' overall quality of voice improved. GRBAS Scale Evaluation showed that the characteristics of the subjects' voice which were rough, breathy, and strained and breathy were reduced after therapy. Third, the measurements of acoustic parameters showed a statistically significant improvement. The fundamental frequency of the subejects' voice was increased and values of Jitter and Shimmer, NHR, [H1-H2] decreased. Fourth, the maximum phonation time of children was increased. These results imply that vocal relaxation training conducted in this study has a very positive effect to improve the voice of children with vocal nodules.
As the method of providing information is getting multimedia, the synthetic voice is used in not only CTI(Computer Telephony Integration), information service for the blind, but also applications on internet. But properties of synthetic voice, such as speech rate, pitch, timbre and so on, are not adjusted to customers' preference but providers' preference. In order to consider customers' preference, this study proposed four subjective factors of voice through the evaluation of voice using the method of sensibility ergonomics. And the relation synthetic voice to be agreeable to the ear with emotional images was formulated as a fuzzy model. Consequently, this study proposed the speech rate and pitch of synthetic voice which is agreeable to the ear.
This paper describes the experiment that investigated the possibility of design and evaluation of the usability of earcon applied to voice menu. The earcon has functions in providing navigational cue in the hierarchical menu, and also can be applied to voice menu for improving the recall rate and the response time. In this experiment, participants identified their location with the help of earcon applied to the voice menu with the various earcon parameters. In detail some participants listened to the good quality sound of voice menu using the structured earcon, and they recalled the location they heard. Other participants listened to the good quality sound of voice menu without earcon, and they recalled the location they heard in the same manner. And the response times were checked through their answers. On analyzing the results, we found the earcon applied to voice menu showed the increase of recalling rate from what they heard during experiment. That is the performance of task was better with earcon applied to voice menu than with voice menu without earcon. In the earcon applied to voice menu test, it showed the accuracy of 92.50%, but in voice menu without earcon test, people could only recall 66.25% among given questions. The response time was reduced from 4.98 sec to 3.85 sec. In addition, this experiment showed the 87.5% of participants preferred the earcon applied to voice menu.
Background and Objectives : This study aims to conduct post-voice therapy to patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis for vocal improvement, motility recovery and analyze the results. Materials and Methods : Voice therapy was conducted to 13 patients who had shown response to voice therapy amongst 98 patients diagnosed with unilateral vocal fold paralysis. In order to be able compare before and after perceptual, acoustic and aerodynamic evaluations were conducted after voice therapy. Also, by using dysphagia checklist, we have verified whether if the patient had dysphagia prior to voice therapy. The therapy was conducted by improving the larynx movement and glottal contact, whilst removing hypertension of the supraglottic. Results : All 13 patients who underwent voice therapy had shown improvements that are statistically significant from 4 scales excluding the S scale from auditory perception evaluation (p<0.05), with enhanced glottal contact. In acoustic evaluation, Jitter, Shimmer and NHR had shown significant improvement after voice therapy. MPT was also notably improved among aerodynamical evaluation (p<0.001). All 11 patients had with dysphagia prior to voice therapy reported to have improved swallowing functions. Conclusion : Application of adequate voice therapy to patients with unilateral vocal fold paralysis, is an effective method that might be employed in the initial phase. Especially, the voice therapy proposed in this study is expected to be useful for patients in hypertension status due to secondary compensation after initial paralysis, since it focuses on improving vocal symptoms in a calm state with the supraglottis sufficiently relaxed. Also, the therapy is expected to be effective for improving swallowing functions.
Background and Objectives Functional aphonia refers to in which by presenting whispering voice and almost producing very high-pitched tensed voices are produced. Voice therapy is the most effective treatment, but there is a lack of consensus for application of voice therapy. The purpose of this study was to examine the vocal characteristics of functional aphonia and the effect of voice therapy applied accordingly. Materials and Method From October 2019 to December 2020, 11 patients with functional aphonia were treated using voice therapy which was processing three stages such as vocal hygiene, trial therapy, and behavioral therapy. Of these, 7 patients who completed the voice evaluation before and after voice therapy was enrolled in this study. By retrospective chart review, clinical information such as sex, age, symptoms, duration, social and medical history, process of voice therapy, subjective and objective findings were analyzed. Voice parameters before and after voice therapy were compared. Results In GRBAS study, grade, rough, and asthenic, and in Consensus Auditory-Perceptual Evaluation of Voice, overall severity, roughness, pitch, and loudness were significantly improved after voice therapy. In Voice handicap index, all of the scores of total and sub-categories were significantly decreased. In objective voice analysis, jitter, cepstral peak prominence, and maximum phonation time were significantly improved. Conclusion The voice therapy was effective for the treatment of functional aphonia by restoring patient's vocalization and improving voice quality, pitch and loudness.
This study attempted to provide a spectrum analysis for quantitative evaluation of singing voice quality of singing students rather than the presence or absence of the singer's formant. The regression analysis was used to analyse the relationship between ringing quality, SPR, and SPP of singing voice of college student subjects majoring in music. This study measured singing. power ratio (SPR) in 41 singing students. Digital audio recordings were made in sung vowels for acoustic analyses. Each sample was judged by 1 experienced singing teacher and 4 voice pathologists on one semantic bipolar 7-point scales (ringing-dull). The results showed that the SPR and SPP had significant correlations with ringing quality. The SPR had a significant relationship with ringing quality on singing voice in singing students. The SPR can be an important quantitative measurement for evaluating singing voice quality.
Methods of voice rehabilitation in laryngectomees include training of esophageal speech, use of electrolarynx and pneumatic speech aid and surgical methods, etc. In this paper, we introduce the experimental model of obturator-type electrolarynx which has several advantages for use such as ease of learning, no disagreeable appearance, and both hands not being occupied. We compared it to normal voice and other voice rehabilitation methods such as esophageal voice, japanese pneumatic speech aid and cervical electrolarynx in intelligibility and sonagraphic evaluation. The results are as follows; 1) Obturator-type electrolarynx exhibited the lowest intelligibility. 2) In sonagraphic evaluation, the spectrogram produced by the obturator-type electrolarynx was the most different from those of normal voice.
Tonsillectomy is the one of operation that is performed the most commonly in otolaryngology field. Many changes that include range of voice, tone, voice quality and resonance were made by tonsillectomy. Sometimes, any patients taken tonsillectomy has suffer from these voice problem after tonsillectomy. However there are less study for these problems until now. Then, we studied to find the anatomical findings that affected the voice quality when tonsillectomy was performed. We evaluated the voice in 2 groups, one is the group showed the normal pharyngeal space by using the transnasal fiberscopy, the other is group showed medially bulging tonsil at pharyngeal cavity by using same method, with perceptual evaluation, nasalance score, nasality, oral formant and nasal formant. We used the computerized speech analysis system, the nasometer and the spectrogram in the CSL program. We could not find any differences in perceptual evaluation between two groups. But objective measures were provided. Nasalance score and nasality on the nasometric analysis were increased significantly and oral formant on the spectrogram was changed singnificantly after tonsillectomy in Group 2. Authors thought medially bulging tonsil in the pharynx is able to affect the voice quality after tonsillectomy when we evaluted through the nasal cavity by the using of fiberscopy and this evaluation would be important especially in singers.
