  • Color(and appearance)is one of the most important visual attributes in food. The favorite color of food is depend on the nation and its culture. Unfortunately the word on color ash superseded appearance as the description of the total visual perception of food. The optical properties are color, gloss, translucency, the uniformity of these attributes over the surface of the product, and the appearance boundary condition visual flavor. The major purpose of this lecture is to stress the importance of color and gloss on the basis of sensory evaluation for vegetables and these cooking process. These points are as follows: 1. Comparison of Shade Changes According to Dry/Wet Condition of Tooth using Intra-Oral Colorimeter (건조정도에 따른 자연치아의 색조비교)

  • One of the most important aspect of esthetic dentistry is shade selection. Alterations to perception of color can occur as a result of numerous factors, including light source, tooth surface texture, observer's ability, surrounding colors, the angle of observation, light and dark adaptation and others. During the clinical procedures, tooth might be in dry or semi-dry condition. The purpose of this study was to compare the shade changes in wet and dry conditions of natural tooth. Groups of measurement are an initial wet condition as control, dry in 10seconds, 1 minute, 5minutes and 30seconds air dry. Using Shadeeye, color difference(${\Delta}E$) between measurements were analyzed and there were significant differences between groups. But most of the differneces were <3.7 ${\Delta}E$ unit. Such differences are below the threshold for perceivable color mismathces in intraoral condition. Shade selection with an intraoral colorimeter could be changes in dry and wet condition but there might be no significant differences in visual color mathing.

Assessment methods for evaluating the whitening effect of cosmetics on human skin

  • Quantitative measurement of melanin is the best method to evaluate whitening effect of cosmetics on human skin. However, non-invasive method to quantify human skin melanin with high precision has not been established. Whitening effect of cosmetics on the skin results in lightening of skin color. Therefore, it is reasonable to measure skin color in a reproducible manner for the assessment of whitening effect. Several Instruments or methods, such as colorimeter, mexameter, and visual assessments by experts , have been used for this purpose. In this lecture I will review the details of various assessment methods for the evaluation of whitening effect and discuss the pros and cons of each method. Then I will present briefly the results of clinical trial. Finally I will introduce new non-invasive modalities to quantify melanocytes.

  • There are two approaches in measuring colors (or chromaticity) in water, i.e., visual comparison method and spectrophotometric method. The color of sample was determined by comparing with that of platinum-cobalt standard solution in the visual comparison method. Single or multiple wavelengths are used for the spectrophotometric method. As the accuracy and precision of visual comparison method depend on the eye sight of the analyzer, the results are not so reliable and representative. In addition, it is hard to measure chromaticity less than 5 TCU. Single wavelength approach in spectrophotometric method, can be applied for groundwater or surface water with natural organic matter (i.e., humic substances) while it's hard to measure the color of wastewater which includes anthropogenic chemical compounds. The measurements with multiple wavelengths approach resulted in reliable data regardless of the source of sample water, i.e., surface water and wastewater. As dozens of measurements and complicated calculations for one sample were required for the multiple wavelengths approach, the approach could not be applied for field measurement. In the present study, the authors tested efficient method which could measure the color of water sample accurately and precisely regardless of the source of water. With the colorimeter with multiple wavelengths and calculation program, the colors of water samples could be measured within 3~4 seconds with accuracy and precision.

  • Textile decalcomania printing is how after the disperse dye which is melting and vaporizing absorbs on the surface of the cloth, it colors by permeating into the cloth inside. So it has applied a lot to the synthetic fiber like polyester. However, because there is no showing right temperature and time in case of printing on the polyester fiber and the microfiber, this study aims at it. The experimental methods are like this : first measuring the density for the objective judgment, and measuring colors with the colorimeter, and then study for the color reproduction through a visual evaluation.

  • Early-frost damages easily take place in smaller and thinner walls and slabs. In case of slabs, it is difficult to visually determine the depth of early-frost damage. As such, the current study aims to determine the depth of early-frost damage caused to concrete structures due to bad curing in the winter. As a result, the study found that the depth of early-frost damages increased from the top as the atmospheric temperature on the concrete surface decreased. The changes in the color allowed the observer to easily identify the depth of early-frost damage with the naked eye. In particular, the color difference between potentially damaged parts and undamaged parts were the greatest around thirty minutes of drying after wetting.

The Formulation of Semi-Transparent Gel Emulsion by the Liquid Crystal Emulsification Method

  • Liquid crystals offer plenty of useful activities as improving the stability of emulsion, increasing moisturizing power, drug release, improving skin feeling and visual effect for cosmetics fields. In order to prepare stable semi-transparent gel emulsion, liquid crystal emulsification method was used. The emulsion stabilities of systems containing glycerin, fatty alcohols, surfactants, water and oil were investigated at various temperatures as time passed. The stabilities of all emulsions were evaluated by means of a polarizing microscope, SEM, rheometer, colorimeter and DSC. Even though the samples stored at $50^{\circ}C$ thermostatic chamber were occurred the reduction of hardness, turbidity and ${\Delta}H$ and the peak shift, the semi-transparent gel emulsion was very stable without separation between water and oils phase in emulsion.

A Review of the Characteristics of Early Apparatus and Methods for Hemoglobin Estimation (Hemoglobin 평가를 위한 초기 기구의 특성 및 측정법 고찰)

  • Since the late 19th century, scientific logic and techniques have been used extensively in the field of clinical pathology, including many laboratory tests utilizing various apparatuses and instruments. Among the techniques to measure hemoglobin, the visual color comparison method was most popular around this time; the specific gravity method and gasometric method were not widely adopted. Instruments that use the visual color comparison method include Gowers' hemoglobinometer, von Fleischl's hemoglobinometer, Dare's hemoglobinometer, Oliver's hemoglobinometer, Haden-Hausser hemoglobinometer, and Spencer Hb meter. Initially, the visual color comparison methods were used to diluate and hemolyze blood with distilled water and then to measure its color. Later, these methods were further developed to measure hemoglobin without dilution, and improved with the formation of acid or alkaline hematin ensuring the stability of color development. Hammerschlag's method as well as the Schmaltz and Peiper's methods were based on specific gravity measurement, but they were not widely used. The gasometric method used the Van Slyke gasometer, indirectly measuring the hemoglobin concentration. This method provides the most accurate results. This survey examined the characteristics and limitations of hemoglobinometers and methods used to measure hemoglobin from the late 19th century to the early-and mid-20th century. Moreover, this study aims to improve the understanding and applicability of the current methods and emerging technologies used in measuring hemoglobin. It is also expected that this investigation is the starting point to promote awareness of the need to organize historical data for a variety of historical relics of the diagnostic laboratory tests.

Shade Comparative Analysis of Natural tooth Measured by Visual and Two Colorimeters(ShadeEye®,Shadepilot®) (2종 측색기와 시각을 이용한 자연치아의 색조 비교 분석)

  • The objectives were to evaluate the accuracy of shade selection by human visual system(VS) and 2 different colorimeters ($ShadeEye^{(R)}$(SE) and Shadepilot (SP)). Maxillary anterior teeth of 30 volunteers which had no caries or restorations were included in the study. Firstly, the accordance in shade selection by 3 dentists and 2 colorimeters was investigated. Secondly, the color of the teeth were measured by 1 observer's naked eye and 2 colorimeters under different illumination conditions (Sunny versus cloudy day). Additionally testing of inter-observer variability selected colors by 2 novice and 2 experienced dentists were compared. For comparing visual and 2 different colorimeters, SP(60%) showed significantly highest rate of accordance than the visual (23.3%) or SE (16.7%) and lowest mean ${\Delta}E$ ($2.62{\pm}0.74$ versus $3.83{\pm}1.38$;SE or $4.04{\pm}1.61$;VS)(p<0.001). If accuracy of shade selection were measured using VS, the mean ${\Delta}E$ value of cloudy day was higher than that of sunny day ($4.35{\pm}1.70$ versus $3.53{\pm}1.31$; p<0.001). There were no significant difference of the mean ${\Delta}E$ value between sunny and cloudy day in both SE and SP. Inter- observer repeatability was higher in 2 experienced group (73.3%) than novice group (36.7%). The mean ${\Delta}E$ of experienced group was lower than that of novice group ($3.60{\pm}1.47$ versus $4.70{\pm}1.67$; p<0.001). Colorimeters (SE or SP) is more accurate and more reproducible compared with human shade assessment. Using visual system may be limited by cloudy and inexperience of tester, then more experience and using colorimeters may be helpful of raising the accurate repeatability of shade selection.
