  • In order to sustain competitive advantage through strategic product differentiation in global market, this research aims to establishment of strategic design conditions for domestic manufacturing firms through the means of product image alignment and positioning, using visual character of product as the foundation for establishing corporate image. Case studies on how globally successful multinational companies manage design strategy and corporate culture uniformly for coherent product image management are reviewed. To establish product image alignment methodology for manufacturing firms, the criteria for product image positioning and aligned product image development process are developed in three stages. First, in image positioning stage, it is important to set the direction for corporate image and design strategy by identifying consumer needs through market trends analysis and forecasting as well as comparative positioning of the analysis results of the firms's own corporate image and that of the competitor's. Second, in awareness building stage, before building the product image alignment, firm-wide shared awareness of differentiated corporate and product image, establishment of designer's role as the consolidated manager of product image, sharing form language, and building the infrastructure for defining form information should be preceded. Third, in managing the aligned product image stage, the condition for setting up image information management guideline, management of decision making process for arriving at logical decisions on product form, development of guideline for increasing efficiency and its evaluation system, and co-development of related design should be induced. Further research on the product image alignment with corporate image should be conducted through various empirical studies on image and form, building an information system of related design language, and continuous assessment and management of applied solutions.

  • Purpose: The aim of the current study is to report on the clinical and radiographic results after calcaneo-stop procedure in Korean children with symptomatic flexible flatfoot. Materials and Methods: Twenty-two children suffering pain along the medial aspect of midfoot with flexible flatfoot whose symptoms did not improve with conservative measures and therefore underwent calcaneo-stop procedure were identified retrospectively. Clinically, American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot scale and visual analogue scale (VAS) were evaluated. Radiographically, standing anteroposterior and lateral radiographs of the foot and Saltzman's alignment views were taken and talonavicular coverage angle, lateral talo-first metatarsal angle, and hindfoot alignment angles were measured and analyzed. Results: Clinically, AOFAS ankle-hindfoot scale improved from $70.3{\pm}5.6$ to $97.3{\pm}2.5$ and VAS improved from $6.4{\pm}1.6$ to $0.2{\pm}0.4$. Radiographically, talonavicular coverage angle improved from $28.3^{\circ}{\pm}12.3^{\circ}$ to $10.9^{\circ}{\pm}8.1^{\circ}$, lateral talo-first metatarsal angle improved from $-19.3^{\circ}{\pm}9.0^{\circ}$ to $-2.4^{\circ}{\pm}8.1^{\circ}$, and hindfoot alignment angle improved from valgus $11.9^{\circ}{\pm}10.0^{\circ}$ to $3.5^{\circ}{\pm}4.3^{\circ}$ at minimum 2-year follow-up. No complications occurred postoperatively. Conclusion: Calcaneo-stop procedure is a simple and very effective procedure for management of pediatric symptomatic flexible flatfoot that does not respond to conservative treatment.

  • Objective : Degenerative changes in the cervical spine are commonly accompanied by cervical kyphosis which can cause neck pain. This study examined the relationship between neck pain and cervical alignment. Methods : A total of 323 female nursing staff from our hospital were enrolled. Sagittal radiographs of the cervical spine, Body Mass Index (BMI), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) measures of neck and arm pain, Neck Disability Index (NDI) and the Short Form (36) Health Survey (SF-36 scores) were obtained and reviewed retrospectively. Global lordosis (GL) of the cervical spine was measured on radiograph images. Correlations between GL and questionnaire scores were investigated using the following three methods : 1) correlation between GL and questionnaire scores among the entire sample; 2) subgroup analysis of patients with "kyphosis (KYP) : GL scores<0" vs. those with "lordosis (LOR) : GL scores>0" on questionnaire measures; and 3) subgroup analysis of patients with pain vs. those without pain, on GL and questionnaire measures. Results : There was no significant correlation between GL and any questionnaire measure. There was a significant difference between the mean GLs of the KYP and LOR groups, but there were no group differences in BMI, age or any questionnaire measures. There was no difference between the pain (n=92) and pain-free (n=231) groups in age, BMI or GL, but there were differences in neck, and arm pain, and physical function and NDI scores. Conclusions : Our data suggest that kyphotic deformity was not associated with neck pain.

  • Objective : Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are two minimally invasive procedures for osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures. The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare the radiological findings and clinical outcomes between two procedures. Methods : Osteoporotic vertebral fractures were treated in 76 vertebrae, using kyphoplasty (n=35 vertebrae) and using vertebroplasty (n=41 vertebrae). Fractured vertebral bodies were diagnosed by correlating the clinical symptoms with radiologic study. The responses of pain symptoms were measured by a self-reported Visual Analog Scale (VAS) score. Plain X-rays were checked preoperatively and postoperatively at admission and 6 months. The vertebral body height and kyphotic angle were measured to assess the reduction of the sagittal alignment. Results : The mean pain scores were decreased significantly for both procedures postoperatively, but there were no significant differences between two groups. Kyphoplasty led to a significant reduction of the vertebral body height and improvement of kyphotic angle. There were no neurological deficits after kyphoplasty, but one patient experienced paraparesis after vertebroplasty. During the 6 months follow-up both procedures provided stabilization of the sagittal alignment. Conclusion : Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty are considered effective minimally invasive techniques for the stabilization of osteoporotic vertebral body fractures, leading to a statistically significant reduction in pain. Kyphoplasty significantly restore sagittal alignment. Also, complications and the incidence of bone cement leakage are significantly lesser than vertebroplasty. Therefore, kyphoplasty seems to be reasonable procedure for osteoporotic vertebral body compression fractures when medical treatment fail.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the clinical and radiographic results of surgical treatment for patients with sinus tarsi pain due to accessory talar facet impingement. Materials and Methods: Between July 2013 and July 2015, nine patients who underwent surgery for the accessory talar facet impingement were reviewed. The mean follow-up period was 18.6 months (12~36 months), and the mean age was 33.1 years (19~60 years). Previous trauma history, duration of symptom, and types of surgery were analyzed. The clinical results were evaluated using the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hindfoot score and visual analogue scale (VAS). Radiographic results were assessed using Meary's angle, calcaneal pitch angle, heel alignment angle, and heel alignment ratio. Results: All patients had evident trauma history prior to the initial symptom. The mean duration of symptoms was 25.6 months (6~120 months). Four patients received only accessory anterolateral talar facet (AALTF) excision, and four patients received medial sliding calcaneal osteotomy (MSCO). One patient underwent both AALTF excision and MSCO. The AOFAS ankle-hindfoot score was significantly improved from 73 (62~77) preoperatively to 93 (67~100) postoperatively. The VAS score was decreased from 6 (5~7) preoperatively to 1 (0~5) postoperatively. The Meary's angle and calcaneal pitch angle showed no significant difference after surgery. The heel alignment angle and ratio increased from $-3.6^{\circ}$ ($-10^{\circ}{\sim}5^{\circ}$) and 0.22 (-0.15~0.6) preoperatively to $2.8^{\circ}$ ($1^{\circ}{\sim}5^{\circ}$) and 0.42 (0.3~0.6) postoperatively, respectively. Conclusion: If there is persistent sinus tarsi pain in patients with hindfoot valgus, accessory talar facet impingement caused by AALTF could be considered as a cause of chronic sinus tarsi pain.

  • The aims of this study were to investigate the correlation between the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the abductor hallucis (AbdH) and the amount of pressure measured by a pinch gauge (PG), and to compare the EMG activity of AbdH and the pressure measured by the PG during short foot (SF) exercise in subjects with pes planus and in subjects with a neutral foot alignment. Fourteen subjects were recruited for this study (pes planus group=7; neutral foot alignment group=7). A surface EMG was used to collect AbdH activity, and a PG was positioned under the first metatarsophalangeal joint to measure the pressure produced by the first metatarsal head during the SF exercise. The AbdH activity and the pressure measured by the PG showed a positive good correlation (r=.80, p<.05). The EMG activity of the AbdH and the pressure measured by the PG were significantly lower for subjects with pes planus than for subjects with a neutral foot alignment (p<.05). Based on these findings, the PG can be recommended as an effective instrument for evaluating the performance of the AbdH. It may also be beneficial for monitoring how well the SF exercise is performed, and for providing visual feedback to patients with pes planus during SF exercise in a clinical setting.

  • Horizontal construction projects such as oil and gas pipeline projects typically involve repetitive-work activities with the same crew and equipment from one end of the project to the other. Repetitive scheduling also known as linear scheduling is known to have superior schedule management capabilities specifically for such horizontal construction projects. This study discusses on expanding the capabilities of repetitive scheduling to account for the variance in production rates and visual representation by developing an automated alignment based linear scheduling program for applying temporal and spatial changes in production rates. The study outlines a framework to apply changes in productions rates when and where they will occur along the horizontal alignment of the project and illustrates the complexity of construction through the time-location chart through a new linear scheduling model, Linear Scheduling Model with Varying Production Rates (LSMVPR). The program uses empirically derived production rate equations with appropriate variables as an input at the appropriate time and location based on actual 750 mile natural gas liquids pipeline project starting in Wyoming and terminating in the center of Kansas. The study showed that the changes in production rates due to time and location resulted in a close approximation of the actual progress of work as compared to the planned progress and can be modeled for use in predicting future linear construction projects. LSMVPR allows the scheduler to develop schedule durations based on minimal project information. The model also allows the scheduler to analyze the impact of various routes or start dates for construction and the corresponding impact on the schedule. In addition, the graphical format lets the construction team to visualize the obstacles in the project when and where they occur due to a new feature called the Activity Performance Index (API). This index is used to shade the linear scheduling chart by time and location with the variation in color indicating the variance in predicted production rate from the desired production rate.

  • Purpose: This study was aimed to analyze the incidence and the anatomical distributions of HME (Hereditary Multiple Exostoses) on upper limbs and its related change in alignment of the upper limbs in HME patients. Materials and Methods: Thirty eight patients who had been diagnosed HME between 2001 and 2009, were categorized into two groups; (1) group A (1-2 involvements); (2) group B (${\geq}$3 involvements). We checked the carrying angle, VAS (Visual Analogue Scale), limitations in daily activities, cosmetic satisfaction according to the number of exostoses invasion. Results: Among the 38 patients, 23 patients (43 cases) had exostoses in the upper limbs. The locations of exostoses in the upper limbs were proximal humerus in 33 cases (30%), distal ulna in 31 cases (28.2%), and distal radius in 24 cases (21.8%). The carrying angle of group A and B was $10.7^{\circ}$, $13.8^{\circ}$, VAS was 1.3, 3.5, and the limitations in daily activities was 7.3, 6.6 of 8 points. The cosmetic satisfactory cases were 13 and 10 cases, respectively. Conclusion: The deformity in upper limbs was observed in 65% of the HME patients. As the number of invasion increases, carrying angle and VAS were increased but limitations in daily activities and cosmetic satisfaction were decreased.
