Assessment of Visual Characteristics of Urban Bridges using Landscape Simulations - A Case Study of Yanghwaro in the Gyeongui Railroad Area - (경관시뮬레이션을 이용한 도시교량의 시각적 특성 평가 - 경의선 폐철구간 양화로 지역을 대상으로 -)

  • This study formed an estimation of the visual characteristics of urban bridges in Yanghwaro in the Gyeongui Railroad Area using a landscape simulation. Existing theses have formerly only suggested directions for design based on visual preference, but there is as yet no research on the practical process of landscape design. As a result, it is difficult to directly apply this to bridge design. This study found a potential bridge site and presented a direction for bridge design in order to improve the image of the surrounding urban landscape by surveying the visual effects and landscape preferences of different bridge types. An urban landscape was produced using a landscape simulation model and was made the background for the survey. Five bridge types--Girder, Arch, Truss, Cable and Suspension--were selected and presented. The shapes of the bridges were selected based on the floor plan. The results of this study are as follows. In a preference analysis, every bridge except Girder was evaluated as a positive influence. When rating the image, 'artificial' was rated significantly higher than other traits when assessing the background image. When the Girder Bridge was introduced, 'stable' and 'orderly' were both rated highly while 'stable', 'beautiful', 'orderly' and 'interesting' were high with the introduction of the Arch Bridge. 'Beautiful', 'stable', and 'orderly' were given a high value in the introduction of the Truss Bridge and every image except 'natural', 'harmony' and 'orderly' were highly rated in the introduction of the Cable Bridge. Further, every image but 'natural' was highly rated with the introduction of the Suspension Bridge. Based on the analysis of the landscape, there is a difference in preference before and after modeling a bridge type, while the bridge itself is an influence when it is the main object of the simulated scene. This study researched only the shape of the bridge as a part of the landscape but other elements such as stability, economics, and construction are also factors in the design of a bridge. Stability, economics, construction and other factors must be considered when selecting a bridge type in the future.

  • The estuarine area of the ecological environment had been seriously damaged by reckless developments during the past half century. The demand for management in estuarine area increased but the efficient management system did not exist. Therefore the aim of this study is to develop a GIS-based integrated DB management system by integrating the ecological environmental data of each division in estuarine area. To achieve this, the system used integrated DB. It is classified into a surveyed monitoring DB in 2010 at estuarine area of Yeongsan and GIS DB to express the spatial data. The integrated DB management system was developed using VisualBasic.NET languages and Arcobjects component for Map-based spatial analysis. Also, to improve the utilization of data, the composition of GUI(Graphical User Interface) through user needs analysis, the expression of monitoring DB, the priority of layer and the function for modular unit were defined. Ultimately the system was developed based on the defined items. GIS-based integrated DB management system can support to understand the ecological environment in estuarine area of Yeongsan river. Also it will provide the users with effective sharing and environmental management of the data. In the future study, comprehensive diagnosis for ecological environment in estuarine area and the reliable prediction need to be made by connecting modeling system.

  • As 5G is getting developed, people are getting interested in immersive content. Some predicts that immersive content may be implemented in real life such as holograms, which were only possible in movies. Holograms, which has been studied for a long time since Dennis Gabor published the basic theory in 1948, are constantly developing in a new direction with digital technology. It is developing from a traditional optical hologram, which is produced by recording the interference pattern of light to a computer generated hologram (CGH) and a digital hologram printer. In order to produce a hologram using a digital hologram printer, holographic element (Hogel) image must first be created using multi-view images. There are a method of directly photographing an actual image and a method of modeling an object using 3D graphic production tool and rendering the motion of a virtual camera to acquire a series of multi-view images. In this paper, we propose a new method of getting image, which is one of the visual effect, VFX, producing multi-view images using chroma key composition. We shoot on the green screen of actual object, suggest the overall workflow of composition with 3D computer graphic(CG) and explain the role of each step. We expected that it will be helpful in researching a new method of image acquisition in the future if all or part of the proposed workflow to be applied.

  • Representation of building internal space is an active research area as the need for more geometrically accurate and visually realistic increases. 3 dimensional representation is common ground of research for disciplines such as computer graphics, architectural design and engineering and Geographic Information System (GIS). In many cases CAD plans are the starting point of reconstruction of 3D building models. The main objectives of building reconstruction in GIS applications are visualization and spatial analysis. Hence, CAD plans need to be preprocessed and edited to adapt to the data models of GIS SW and then georeferenced to enable spatial analysis. This study automated the preprocessing of CAD data using AutoCAD VBA (Visual Basic Application), and the processed data was topologically restructured for further analysis in GIS environment. Accuracy of georeferencing CAD data was also examined by comparing the results of coordinate transformation by using digital maps and GPS measurements as the sources of ground control points. The reconstructed buildings were then applied to visualization and network modeling.

  • In Korea, recently, efforts have been made to introduce BIM(Building Information Modeling) to housing complex projects. However, there have been several problems including excessive competition for building design and outcome-oriented evaluation due to a lack of clear evaluation criteria and poorly organized management process. Under this circumstance, the study surveyed opinions of project managers and conducted a pilot test to improve evaluation criteria of BIM-based design for housing complexes. The objective is to assess the level of BIM technology and its applicability, and to propose a list of reasonable evaluation criteria for better project management. First, the study examined the current condition of evaluation on the BIM-based housing complexes, and identified 15 preliminary items that might be suitable for application of BIM. Second, the study conducted a pilot test for the 15 items to determine their suitability for the level of BIM technology, clarity of the calculation process, and the extent of fulfilling information quality, and short-listed eight items for application of BIM. In particular, in the design concept stage, mostly 3D visual images and area-related items are suitable for BIM-based evaluation. Accordingly, formerly used items such as project cost, energy and environmental analysis, building structure, and facilities were deemed more relevant to the subsequent stages of basic design and its implementation.

A Preliminary Study of Prototype for Improving VE Workshop Phase based on BIM (BIM 기반 VE 워크샵 단계의 업무 향상을 위한 프로토타입 개발에 관한 기초연구)

  • VE workshop is performed based on VE expert' experiences without retrieving VE data of similar previous projects. Moreover, it usually omitted or applied for the sake of formality due to insufficiently understanding VE function, limited time, space and budget. Even though many studies have established VE databases for retrieving and reusing VE data, VE workshop is still inefficient and ineffective to improve projects' values. With this regard, this study proposes a preliminary prototype for improving VE workshop, which utilizes the state-of-the-art information communication technologies(ICTs) including Building Information Modeling(BIM), Mobile Computing(MC), Network Service System(NSS), and Database Management System(DBMS) for better managing, storing and reusing VE data. The prototype was developed to evaluate advantages and limitations. The results show that the proposed prototype can support visual VE data retrieval from similar previous projects, enhance communication among VE team and save much time and cost comparing to traditional VE. Through this, the productivity of VE workshop can improve efficiently and effectively.

Design and Implementation of 3D Studio Max Plug-In in Collaborative Systems (협력시스템에서 3D 스튜디오 맥스 플러그인 설계 및 개발)

  • Collaborative systems allow users, who may be far removed from each other geographically, to do collaborative work such as 3D animation, computer game, and industrial design in a single virtual space. This paper describes our experience to develop a collaborative system framework that aims at expanding the some functions of a stand-alone visual modeling tool, called 3D Studio Max, into those of the distributed collaborative working environments. The paper mainly deals with design and implementation of a 3D shared-object Plug-In with respect to the 3D Studio Max Plug-In Software Development Kit in the distributed collaborative system developed by the authors. There are two major functions of the proposed scheme; one is to write 3D object-information to the shared memory after extracting it from the 3D Studio Max, the other is to create 3D objects after retrieving them from the shared memory. Also, the proposed scheme provides a simple way of storing 3D objects that have variable size, by means of shared memory which located in between the collaborative system clients and 3D studio Max. One of the remarkable virtures of the Plug-In is to reduce a considerable amount of shared object data which in consequence can mitigate the network overhead. This can be achieved by the fact that the system is able to extract a minimum amount of 3D objects that are required to transmit. Also, using the proposed scheme, user can facilitate 3D Studio Max into distributed collaborative working environments. This, in consequence give many benefits such as saving time as well as eliminating space constraints in the course of 3D modeling when we are under industrial design process.

Exploring Progression Levels for Science Metamodeling Knowledge of the Science Gifted (과학영재 학생들의 과학 메타모델링 지식 발달 단계 탐구)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the progression levels of science metamodeling knowledge through using questionnaires for 97 students of the gifted in G science academy. As a result of the Rasch model analysis, it was confirmed that the progression levels of the scientific metamodeling knowledge is suitable for the person reliability of 0.71 and the item reliability of 0.96. The progression levels of students' science metamodeling knowledge were classified into 4 stages. First and second levels were considered model to be objective and the third and fourth stages were perceived as subjective. The first level is to view the model as a visual representation of a phenomenon as it is, and the second level is to think that the model corresponds to objective knowledge or theory and is a tool for explanation. The Third level looks at the model as a scientist's exploration tool and fourth level is to think that the model is provisional one and multiple models can coexist in one phenomenon. The progression levels of science metamodeling knowledge of science high school students derived from this study is expected to be used as a reference when constructing a curriculum for science modeling and modeling for gifted students.

Analysis of High School Students' Conceptual Change in Model-Based Instruction for Blood Circulation (혈액 순환 모형 기반 수업에서 고등학생들의 개념 변화 분석)

  • The purpose of this article is to analyze the conceptual change of nine 11th graders after implementing the model-based instruction of blood circulation by multidimensional framework, and to find some implications about teaching strategies for improving conceptual understanding. The model-based instruction consisted of 4 periods: (1) introduction for inducing students' interests using an episode in the science history of blood circulation, (2) vivisectional experiment on rats, (3) visual-linguistic model instruction using the videotape of heartbeat, and (4) modeling activity on the path of blood flow. Based on the data from pre-test, post-test and interviews, we classified students' models on the path of blood flow, and investigated their ontological features and the conceptual status of blood circulation. Most students could describe the path of blood flow and the changes of substances in blood precisely after the instructions. However, the modeling activity were not sufficient to improve students' understanding of the mechanisms of the blood distribution throughout various organs and the material exchanges between blood and tissues. From the interview of 9 students, we acquired informative results about conceptual status elements that were helpful to, preventing from, or not used for students' understanding. It was also found that conceptual status of students depended on the ontological categories into which students' conceptions of blood circulation fell. The results of this study can help design the effective teaching strategy for the understanding of concept of the equilibrium category.

Marketing for Real and Virtual Museums: A marketing Model to Explain Visitor Behavior in Real Museums and an Outlook on its Applicability to Virtual Museums

  • The purpose of this study is to obtain more insight into the explanation and prognosis of consumer behavior in real and virtual museums. The analysis focuses on the influence of the museum environment on the museum patrons (rather than on the influence of the art objects). On the basis of the emotional approach to environmental psychology by Mehrabian and Russell (1974), a behavior model has been developed for museums. The model, which is based on the emotional variables pleasure, arousal and dominance (PAD), is also enhanced by cognitive variabies (learning attractiveness, education standard and information demand). The enhancement of the classical model was necessary because cognitive variables play a major role in cultural institutions such as museums: One important objective of museums is the communication of cultural knowledge to visitors. The model is tested empirically using structural equation modeling. 301 visitors were interviewed individually. Two different museum environments were represented using visual stimuli. The theoretical model for museums can be proved empirically. The degree to which the model fits the empirical data was extensively tested. The model showed high compatibility with the data and could be accepted. The study proves that a model can be developed, which explains visitor behavior in museums. The model shows museum designers how museums should be designed to be both emotionally appealing and a learning environment. Based on empirical studies in virtual stores on the Internet, it is discussed whether the research findings in these environments may be applied to virtual museum environments. In order to create an emotionally appealing virtual museum, it is recommended that one uses a 3-dimensional representation to offer various possibilities for interaction and to create a multi-sensual environment that appears highly realistic.
