This paper proposes a method to detect a facial region and extract facial features which is crucial for visual recognition of human faces. In this paper, we extract the MER(Minimum Enclosing Rectangle) of a face and facial components using projection analysis on both edge image and binary image. We use an active contour model(snakes) for extraction of the contours of eye, mouth, eyebrow, and face in order to reflect the individual differences of facial shapes and converge quickly. The determination of initial contour is very important for the performance of snakes. Particularly, we detect Minimum Enclosing Rectangle(MER) of facial components and then determine initial contours using general shape of facial components within the boundary of the obtained MER. We obtained experimental results to show that MER extraction of the eye, mouth, and face was performed successfully. But in the case of images with bright eyebrow, MER extraction of eyebrow was performed poorly. We obtained good contour extraction with the individual differences of facial shapes. Particularly, in the eye contour extraction, we combined edges by first order derivative operator and zero crossings by second order derivative operator in designing energy function of snakes, and we achieved good eye contours. For the face contour extraction, we used both edges and grey level intensity of pixels in designing of energy function. Good face contours were extracted as well.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the modes of visualization which appears in the process of thinking that mathematically gifted 6th grade students get to understand components of the three-dimensional shapes on the duality of regular polyhedrons, find the duality relation between the relations of such components, and further explore on whether such duality relation comes into existence in other regular polyhedrons. The results identified in this study are as follows: First, as components required for the process of exploring the duality relation of polyhedrons, there exist primary elements such as the number of faces, the number of vertexes, and the number of edges, and secondary elements such as the number of vertexes gathered at the same face and the number of faces gathered at the same vertex. Second, when exploring the duality relation of regular polyhedrons, mathematically gifted students solved the problems by using various modes of spatial visualization. They tried mainly to use visual distinction, dimension conversion, figure-background perception, position perception, ability to create a new thing, pattern transformation, and rearrangement. In this study, by investigating students' reactions which can appear in the process of exploring geometry problems and analyzing such reactions in conjunction with modes of visualization, modes of spatial visualization which are frequently used by a majority of students have been investigated and reactions relating to spatial visualization that a few students creatively used have been examined. Through such various reactions, the students' thinking in exploring three dimensional shapes could be understood.
As network and multimedia service has increased in educational environment, it is needed to study on digital system based educational scenarios, especially in art and design departments in which visual educational materials mainly used. Therefore, this study was conducted with three objectives: first, developing components of design database and their classification system, second, developing contents of database for fundamental form education in design, and third, developing application method of database. According to these objectives, the secondary research was implemented into two directions; the analysis of classification categories of design, and the analysis of contents and process of fundamental form design education. From the secondary research, it was found that design database should have a flexible structure with flexible components as well as fixed components to include subjective and aesthetic assessment. In the end, the application methods and user interface system of design database was developed based on design educational scenarios.

In this study, in order to evaluate the damage and deterioration of the track components of sleeper floating track (STEDEF), the field samples(specimens) were taken from the serviced line over 20 years old, and the track components were visually inspected, and investigated by laboratory tests and finite element analysis. As a result of visual inspection, the damage of the rail pad and fastener was slight, but the rubber boot was worn and torn at the edges of bottom. The resilience pads were clearly examined for thickness reduction and fatigue hardening layer. As a result of spring stiffness test of rail pad and resilience pad, the deterioration of rail pad was insignificant, but the deterioration of resilience pad exceeded design standard value. Therefore resilience pad was directly affected by train passing tonnage. As a result of comparing the deterioration state of the field sample and the numerical analysis result, the stress and displacement concentration position of the finite element model and the damage position of the field sample were coincident.

To derive brain-based evolutionary educational principles, this study examined the studies on the structural and functional characteristics of human brain, the biological evolution occurring between- and within-organism, and the evolutionary attributes embedded in science itself and individual scientist's scientific activities. On the basis of the core characteristics of human brain and the framework of universal Darwinism or universal selectionism consisted of generation-test-retention (g-t-r) processes, a Model of Brain-based Evolutionary Scientific Teaching for Learning (BEST-L) was developed. The model consists of three components, three steps, and assessment part. The three components are the affective (A), behavioral (B), and cognitive (C) components. Each component consists of three steps of Diversifying $\rightarrow$ Emulating (Executing, Estimating, Evaluating) $\rightarrow$ Furthering (ABC-DEF). The model is 'brain-based' in the aspect of consecutive incorporation of the affective component which is based on limbic system of human brain associated with emotions, the behavioral component which is associated with the occipital lobes performing visual processing, temporal lobes performing functions of language generation and understanding, and parietal lobes, which receive and process sensory information and execute motor activities of the body, and the cognitive component which is based on the prefrontal lobes involved in thinking, planning, judging, and problem solving. On the other hand, the model is 'evolutionary' in the aspect of proceeding according to the processes of the diversifying step to generate variants in each component, the emulating step to test and select useful or valuable things among the variants, and the furthering step to extend or apply the selected things. For three components of ABC, to reflect the importance of emotional factors as a starting point in scientific activity as well as the dominant role of limbic system relative to cortex of brain, the model emphasizes the DARWIN (Driving Affective Realm for Whole Intellectual Network) approach.
This study aims at understanding the components of on-line newspaper and how each newspaper's layout configuration is differentiated through the analysis on the websites of 10 general daily newspapers in the news stand of NAVER. The collection of data was implemented twice, and One-Way ANOVA was used as an analyzing way. The content of the analysis was carried out based on the types of visual images, the number of photo-based articles and title-based articles, the size of image for the main story, etc. As a result of analysis, the rate of news articles with the audios, videos, cards and slides differentiated from paper-based newspaper was low, and also the news articles using the informative graphics and the graphic sources were very small in number. As a whole, the newspapers in the news stand of NAVER showed that they attempt to make a distinction of their newspaper layout by using a variety of editorial techniques. The significance of this paper is to offer a basic clue to the editing formation to promote the news consumption of newspapers. Under the circumstance that the ecology of media is rapidly being reformed by new media technology, the continuous study of how the newspaper layout should be changed will be needed.

The vigor condition of trees is an important indicator for the management of urban forested area. But difficulties in how to assess the tree vigor condition still remain. Previous efforts were limited in the 1) measurement of single indicator rather than using multiple indices, 2) purpose-oriented measurement such as for air-pollution effect or specific pathological symptom, and 3) ordinal-scale evaluations by field crews 4) despite human errors based on his/her experiences or prior knowledge. Therefore, this study attempted to develop a quantitative and objective methodology for assessing tree vigor condition, by measuring multiple modules and building the profile inventory. Furthermore, the possibility and limitations were discussed in terms of schematic frames describing tree vigor condition. The vigor condition of 56 flowering cherry plants in urban park were assessed by in-situ measurements of following eight items; growth of crown(Gc), growth of shoots, individual tree volume(Vol), plant area index, woody area index, leaf area index, leaf chlorophyll content(Lc) and leaf water content(Lw). For validation, these measurements were compared with the ranks of holistic tree vigor condition, which were visually assessed using a 4-point grading scale based on the expert's knowledge. As a result, the measures of each evaluation item successfully highlighted a variety of aspects in tree vigor condition, including the states of both photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic parts. The variation in the results depending on evaluated parts was shown within an individual tree, even though the broad agreement among the results was found. The result of correlation analysis between the tested measurements and 4-point visual assessment, demonstrated that the state of water-stressed foliage of the season (Lw) or the development of plant materials since sapling phase (Vol) could be better viewed from the outer appearance of trees than other symptoms. But only based on the visual assessment, it may be difficult to detect the quality of photosynthesis (Lc) or the recent trend in growth of trees (Gc). To make this methodology simplified for the broad-scale application, the tested eight measurements could be integrated into two components by principal component analysis, which was labelled with 'the amount of plant materials' and 'vigor trend', respectively. In addition, the use of these quantitative and multi-scale indicators underlies the importance of assessing various aspects of tree vigor condition, taking into account the response(s) on different time and spatial scale of pressure(s) shown in each evaluated module. Future study should be advanced for various species at diverse developing stages and environment, and the application to wide areas at a periodic manner.
The knowledge base on emotional information is one of the key elements in the implementation of emotion retrieval systems for contents design of Mobile devices. This study proposed a new approach to the knowledge base implementation by automatically extracting color components from full-color images. In this study, the validity of the proposed method was empirically tested. Database was developed using 100 interior images as visual stimuli and a total of 48 subjects participated in the experiment. In order to test the reliability of the proposed 'emotional information knowledge base', firstly 'recall ratio' that refers to frequencies of correct images from the retrieved images was derived. Secondly, correlation Analysis was performed to compare the ratings by the subjects to what the system calculated. Finally, the rating comparison was used to run a paired-sample t-test. The analysis demonstrated satisfactory recall ration of 62.1%. Also, a significant positive correlation (p<.01) was observed from all the emotion keywords. The paired Sample t-test found that all the emotion keywords except "casual" retrieved the images in the order from more relevant to less relevant images and the difference was statistically significant (t(9)=5.528, p<.05). Findings of this study support that the proposed 'emotional information knowledge base' established only with color information automatically extracted from images can be effectively used for such visual stimuli search tasks as commercial interior images.
This study was aimed at investigating the activities of a badminton club and designing smart wear to prevent sports injuries during badminton club activities. Everyone is familiar with sports in an aging society and clubs are gradually developing. Popular badminton club activities lead to frequent sports injuries, especially ankle injuries, which are a serious problem that hampers members' participation in sports. Therefore, this study aims to propose a prototype design for smart wear to prevent sports injuries, including ankle injuries. First, we identified the characteristics and considerations of members of badminton clubs, and the components of smart wear to prevent sports injuries. Second, members of the badminton clubs and an elite badminton player participated in a survey on the issues and requirements associated with wearing smart wear. Third, usage scenarios for smart wear were created based on literature reviews and the user assessment lists. Fourth, a prototype of the smart wear to prevent sports injuries including ankle injuries was created based on the scenarios. With the proposed smart wear, members of badminton clubs who may require assistance with sports injuries will be able to monitor said injuries, as well as their health condition, as avatars in visual games through a smart terminal. The visual game system will provide easier access to information about sports injuries and health. This smart sportswear will allow members of badminton clubs to prevent sports injuries and review their performance. This study can be utilized to design smart wear to prevent sports injuries and monitor sporting activities or bio-signals.

One major change in the 2015 revised national curriculum is that computational thinking ability is becoming an essential competency for students. Computational thinking is divided into abstraction, automation, and creative convergence in the curriculum for secondary schools' Information subject. And, the curriculum contains problem solving and programming area. Among the components of computational thinking, data representation emphasizes the ability to structure data and information for problem solving of learners. Pre-service teachers of Information subject at secondary schools also learn how to structure information through diagramming. There are differences in the ability to structure diagrams among students, but the studies on learning methods that help students develop their structuring abilities have rarely been performed. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the differences of abstract thinking disposition and gender perspective among college students. As a result, female students had more concrete thinking disposition than male students. Also, there were gender differences according to the characteristics of diagrams. Differences in abstract thinking disposition also made a difference in structuring diagrams. It is useful for achieving the education purpose of improving computational thinking ability by finding out the differences in thinking tendency between males and females and finding the education method that can complement them.
