On-field Crop Stress Detection System Using Multi-spectral Imaging Sensor

  • Nitrogen (N) management is critical for corn production. On the other hand, N leaching into the groundwater creates serious environmental problems. There is a demand for sensors that can assess the plant N deficiency throughout the growing season to allow producers to reach their production goals, while maintaining environmental quality. This paper reports on the performance of a vision-based reflectance sensor for real-time assessment of N stress level of corn crops. Data were collected representing the changes in crop reflectance in various spectral ranges over several stages of development in the growing season. The performance of this non-contact sensor was validated under various field conditions with reference measurement from a Minolta SPAD meter and stepped nitrogen treatments.

  • An optical method to measure the three-dimensional (3D) shape of a surface with specular reflection is proposed. The proposed method is based on the analysis of the geometric path of the light from a point source, and the relative displacements of points in the reflection image. The 3D shape of a concave mirror is shown to be determined approximately via experiments, where the vision system consists of LED array illumination, a half-mirror, and an imaging sensor.

  • In the paper, we proposed a new system to retrieve 3D wrinkle data based on stereo images. Usually, 3D reconstruction based on stereo images or video is very popular and it is the research focus, which has been applied for culture heritage, building and other scene. The target is object measurement, the scene depth calculation and 3D data obtained. There are several challenges in our research. First, it is hard to take the full information wrinkle images by cameras because of light influence, skin with non-rigid object and camera performance. We design a particular computer vision system to take winkle images with a long length camera lens. Second, it is difficult to get the dense stereo data because of the hard skin texture image segmentation and corner detection. We focus on semi-dense stereo matching algorithm for the wrinkle depth. Compared with the 3D scanner, our system is much cheaper and compared with the physical modeling based method, our system is more flexible with high performance.

Development of the Computer Vision based Continuous 3-D Feature Extraction System via Laser Structured Lighting (레이저 구조광을 이용한 3차원 컴퓨터 시각 형상정보 연속 측정 시스템 개발)

  • A system to extract continuously the real 3-D geometric fearture information from 2-D image of an object, which is fed randomly via conveyor has been developed. Two sets of structured laser lightings were utilized. And the laser structured light projection image was acquired using the camera from the signal of the photo-sensor mounted on the conveyor. Camera coordinate calibration matrix was obtained, which transforms 2-D image coordinate information into 3-D world space coordinate using known 6 points. The maximum error after calibration showed 1.5 mm within the height range of 103mm. The correlation equation between the shift amount of the laser light and the height was generated. Height information estimated after correlation showed the maximum error of 0.4mm within the height range of 103mm. An interactive 3-D geometric feature extracting software was developed using Microsoft Visual C++ 4.0 under Windows system environment. Extracted 3-D geometric feature information was reconstructed into 3-D surface using MATLAB.

Incremental displacement estimation of structures using paired structured light

  • As civil structures are exposed to various external loads, it is essential to assess the structural condition, especially the structural displacement, in every moment. Therefore, a visually servoed paired structured light system was proposed in the previous study. The proposed system is composed of two screens facing with each other, each with a camera, a screen, and one or two lasers controlled by a 2-DOF manipulator. The 6-DOF displacement can be calculated from the positions of three projected laser beams and the rotation angles of the manipulators. In the estimation process, one of well-known iterative methods such as Newton-Raphson or extended Kalman filter (EKF) was used for each measurement. Although the proposed system with the aforementioned algorithms estimates the displacement with high accuracy, it takes relatively long computation time. Therefore, an incremental displacement estimation (IDE) algorithm which updates the previously estimated displacement based on the difference between the previous and the current observed data is newly proposed. To validate the performance of the proposed algorithm, simulations and experiments are performed. The results show that the proposed algorithm significantly reduces the computation time with the same level of accuracy compared to the EKF with multiple iterations.

  • In this paper, for manufacturing a custom-made shoes, shape of foot acquired three-dimensional measurement device which makes shoe-last data for needing a custom-made shoes is founded on artificial intelligence technique and it shows method restoring to the original shape in optimized state. the developed system for this study is based on PC which uses existing three dimensional measurement method. And it gains shoe-last and data of foot shape going through 8 CCD(Charge Coupled Device) Which equipped top and bottom, right and left sides and 4 lasers which also equipped both sides and upper and lower sides. The acquired data are processed image processing algorithm using artificial intelligence technique. And result of data management is better quality of removing noise than other system not using artificial intelligence technique and it can simplify post-processing. So, this paper is constituted hardware and software system and it used neural network for determining threshold value, when input image on pre-processing step is being stage of image binarization and present that results.

Driver Drowsiness Detection Algorithm based on Facial Features (얼굴 특징점 기반의 졸음운전 감지 알고리즘)

  • Drowsy driving is a significant factor in traffic accidents, so driver drowsiness detection system based on computer vision for convenience and safety has been actively studied. However, it is difficult to accurately detect the driver drowsiness in complex background and environmental change. In this paper, it proposed the driver drowsiness detection algorithm to determine whether the driver is drowsy through the measurement standard of a yawn, eyes drowsy status, and nod based on facial features. The proposed algorithm detect the driver drowsiness in the complex background, and it is robust to changes in the environment. The algorithm can be applied in real time because of the processing speed faster. Throughout the experiment, we confirmed that the algorithm reliably detected driver drowsiness. The processing speed of the proposed algorithm is about 0.084ms. Also, the proposed algorithm can achieve an average detection rate of 98.48% and 97.37% for a yawn, drowsy eyes, and nod in the daytime and nighttime.

BIM and Thermographic Sensing: Reflecting the As-is Building Condition in Energy Analysis

  • This paper presents an automated computer vision-based system to update BIM data by leveraging multi-modal visual data collected from existing buildings under inspection. Currently, visual inspections are conducted for building envelopes or mechanical systems, and auditors analyze energy-related contextual information to examine if their performance is maintained as expected by the design. By translating 3D surface thermal profiles into energy performance metrics such as actual R-values at point-level and by mapping such properties to the associated BIM elements using XML Document Object Model (DOM), the proposed method shortens the energy performance modeling gap between the architectural information in the as-designed BIM and the as-is building condition, which improve the reliability of building energy analysis. Several case studies were conducted to experimentally evaluate their impact on BIM-based energy analysis to calculate energy load. The experimental results on existing buildings show that (1) the point-level thermography-based thermal resistance measurement can be automatically matched with the associated BIM elements; and (2) their corresponding thermal properties are automatically updated in gbXML schema. This paper provides practitioners with insight to uncover the fundamentals of how multi-modal visual data can be used to improve the accuracy of building energy modeling for retrofit analysis. Open research challenges and lessons learned from real-world case studies are discussed in detail.

Efficient Hardware Architecture for Fast Image Similarity Calculation (고속 영상 유사도 분석을 위한 효율적 하드웨어 구조)

  • Due to its robustness to illumination change, normalized cross-correlation based similarity measurement is widely used in many machine vision applications. However, its inefficient computation structure is not adequate for real-time embedded vision system. In this paper, we present an efficient hardware architecture based on a normalized cross correlation (NCC) for fast image similarity measure. The proposed architecture simplifies window-sum process of the NCC using the integral-image. Relieving the overhead to constructing integral image, we make it possible to process integral image construction at the same time that pixel sequences are inputted. Also the proposed segmented integral image method can reduce the buffer size for storing integral image data.
