The purpose of this study is to develop a method for predicting the aerodynamic performance of the low speed airfoils in the 2-dimensional, steady and viscous flow. For this study, the airfoil geometry is specified by adopting the longest chord line system and by considering local surface curvature. In case of the inviscid incompressible flow, the analysis is accomplished by the linearly varying strength vortex panel method and the Karman-Tsien correction law is applied for the inviscid compressible flow analysis. The Goradia integral method is adopted for the boundary layer analysis of the laminar and turbulent flows. Viscous and inviscid solutions are converged by the Lockheed iterative calculating method using the equivalent airfoil geometry. The analysis of the separated flow is performed using the Dvorak and Maskew's method as the basic method. The wake effect is also considered by expressing its geometry using the formula of Summey and Smith when no separation occurs. The computational efficiency is verified by comparing the computational results with experimental data and by the shorter execution time.

Analysis of flow phenomena in a centrifugal compressor impeller has been carried out with numerical simulation to understand the physics of flow near stall. Near stall point, tip leakage flow spills ahead of the leading edge of adjacent blade and other leakage flow passes over the clearance of the adjacent blade instead of rolling up into vortex within the passage. The tip leakage flow at the mid chord of impeller blade impinges against the pressure surface of the adjacent blade and then rolls up into vortex within the passage, which blocks the flow passage and generates viscous loss. The spillage of leakage flow ahead of the adjacent blade generates the recirculation of flow entering the impeller, which causes the power transferred into the flow by the impeller to decrease and blocks the flow passage. Near diffuser hub wall, flow recirculation occurs. As operating point goes to stall point, the core of recirculation approaches the impeller exit The length rises to peak point and then drops with mass flow reduction, while the height steadily rises.
The two-dimensional unsteady incompressible viscous flow behind rectangular bluff bodies between two parallel plates was analyzed numerically. The steady state flow and the vortex flow behind rectangular bluff bodies in the channel were investigated for two regimes i.e., the laminar(Re = 100, 300, 500) and the turbulent flows(Re = 10⁴∼10/sup 6/). The vortex shedding was generated by a physical disturbance(6%) numerically imposed at the rear of the bluff bodies for a short time. It was observed that the perturbed flow became periodic after a transient period. And in the case of unsteady inflow, the sinusoidal pulsatile flow was applied as the inlet condition in the turbulent flow of Reynolds number of 1.0×10/sup 5/. FLUENT code was employed to solve the problems. The power-law scheme was used to get stable linearized equations and the PISO algorithm was applied to finding the solution of them.

It is known that tip clearance flows reduce the pressure rise, flow range and efficiency of the turbomachinery. So, the clear understanding about flow fields in the tip region is needed to efficiently design the turbomachinery. The Navier-Stokes code with the proper treatment of the boundary conditions has been developed to analyze the three-dimensional steady viscous flow fields in the transonic rotating blades and a numerical study has been conducted to investigate the detail flow physics in the tip region of transonic rotor, NASA Rotor 67. The computational results in the tip region of transonic rotors show the leakage vortices, leakage flow from pressure side to suction side and their interaction with a shock. Depen ding on the operating conditions, toad distributions and the position of shock-wave on the blade surface are very different close to the blade tip of the transonic compressor rotor. The load distribution and the shock-wave position close to the blade tip had the close relationship with the starting position of leakage vortex and the direction of leakage flow.
The distinguishing features of flows at high angles of attacks are caused by the generation of free shear layers at sharp leading edges, by separation of the viscous layers from the surfaces of wings and bodies and by the flow in the wakes of the wings and bodies. In this study, systematic approach by PIV experimental method within a circulating water channel was adopted to study the fundamental characteristics of induced vortex generation, development and its breakdown appearing on a delta wing model with or without LEX in terms of four angles of attack($15^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$, $25^{\circ}$, $30^{\circ}$) and six measuring sections(30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%) of chord length. Distributions of time-averaged velocity vectors and vorticities over the delta wing model were compared along the chord length direction. Highly swept leading edge extension(LEX) applied to delta wings has greatly improved the subsonic maneuverability of contemporary fighters. High-speed CCD camera which made it possible to acquire serial images is able to get the detailed information about the flow characteristics occurred on the delta wing. Especially quantitative comparison of the maximum vorticity featuring the induced pressure distribution were also conducted to clarity the significance of the LEX existence.
The effects of free surface on wake behind a rotating propeller were investigated experimentally in a circulating water channel with the variation of water depth. Instantaneous velocity fields were measured using two-frame PIV technique at tow different blade phases and ensemble-averaged to investigate the phase-averaged flow structure in the wake region. For an isolated propeller, the flow behind the propeller is influenced by the propeller rotation and the free surface. The phase-averaged mean velocity fields show that the potential wake and the viscous wake are formed by the boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces. The interaction between the tip vortices and the slipstream causes the oscillating trajectory of tip vortices. Tip vortices are generated periodically and the slipstream contracts in the near-wake region. The presence of free surface affects the wake structure largely, when the water depth is less than 0.6D. The free surface modifies the vortex structure, especially the tip and trailing vortices and flow structure in slipstreams of the propeller wake behind X/D = 0.3.
The objective of present paper is to apply a stereoscopic PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) techiique for measuring the 3 dimensional flow structure of turbulent wake behind a marine propeller with 5 blades. It is essential to measure 3-components velocity fields for the investigation of complicated near-wake behind the propeller. The out-of-plane velocity component was measured using the particle images captured by two CCD cameras in the angular displacement configuration.400 instantaneous velocity fields were measured for each of few different blade phases of $0^{\circ},\;18^{\circ},\;36^{\circ}\;and\;54^{\circ}$. They were ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the propeller wake in the region ranged from the trailing edge to the region of one propeller diameter(D) downstream. The phase-averaged velocity fields show the viscous wake formed by the boundary layers developed along the blade surfaces. Tip vortices were formed periodically and the slipstream contraction occurs in the near-wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component has large values at the tip and trailing votices. With going downstream, the axial turbulence intensity and the strength of tip vortices were decreased due to the visous dissipation, turbulence diffusion and blade-to-blade interaction. The blade wake traveling at higher speed with respect to the tip vortex overtakes and interacts with tip vortices formed from the previous blade. Tip vortices are separated from the wake and show oscillating trajectory
The characteristics of flow around a rotating propeller were investigated using PIV technique. For each of four different blade phases of $0^{\circ},\;18^{\circ},\;36^{\circ}\;and\;54^{\circ}$four hundred instantaneous velocity fields were ensemble averaged to investigate the spatial evolution of the flow around a propeller. The phase-averaged mean velocity fields show that the viscous wake formed by the boundary layers developed on the blade surfaces and the slipstream contraction in the near-wake region. The out-of-plane velocity component and strain rate had large values at the locations of the tip and trailing vortices. The boundary layer developed along the ship hull bottom surface of the ship stern provides a strong turbulent shear layer, affecting the vortex structure in the propeller near-wake. As the flow develops in the downstream direction, the trailing vortices formed behind the propeller hub move upward slightly due to the presence of the hull wake and free surface. The turbulence intensity has large values around the tip and trailing vortices. As the wake moves downstream, the strength of the vorticity diminishes and the turbulence intensity increases due to turbulent diffusion and active mixing between the tip vortices and adjacent wake flow.

We investigated the aerodynamic characteristics of a three-dimensional (3D) wing with an endplate in the vicinity of the free surface by solving incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with the turbulence closure model. The endplate causes a blockage effect on the flow, and an additional viscous effect especially near the endplate. These combined effects of the endplate significantly reduce the magnitudes of the velocities under the lower surface of the wing, thereby enhancing aerodynamic performance in terms of the force coefficients. The maximum lift-to-drag ratio of a wing with an endplate is increased 46% compared to that of wing without an endplate at the lowest clearance. The tip vortex of a wing-with-endplate (WWE) moved laterally to a greater extent than that of a wing-without-endplate (WOE). This causes a decrease in the induced drag, resulting in a reduction in the total drag.
In order to improve the efficiency and reliability of the machine, the friction should be minimized. The most widely used method to minimize friction is to maintain the fluid lubrication state. However, we can reduce friction only up to a certain limit because of viscosity. As a result of several recent studies, surface texturing has significantly reduced the friction in highly sliding machine elements, such as mechanical seals and thrust bearings. Thus far, theoretical studies have mainly focused on isothermal/iso-viscous conditions and have not taken into account the heat generation, caused by high viscous shear, and the temperature conditions on the bearing surface. In this study, we investigate the effect of dimple depth and film-temperature boundary conditions on the thermohydrodynamic (THD) lubrication of textured parallel slider bearings. We analyzed the continuity equation, the Navier-Stokes equation, the energy equation, and the temperature-viscosity and temperature-density relations using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, FLUENT. We compare the temperature and pressure distributions at various dimple depths. The increase in oil temperature caused by viscous shear was higher in the dimple than in the bearing outlet because of the action of the strong vortex generated in the dimple. The lubrication characteristics significantly change with variations in the dimple depths and film-temperature boundary conditions. We can use the current results as basic data for optimum surface texturing; however, further studies are required for various temperature boundary conditions.
