Using a strain-controlled rheometer, the dynamic viscoelastic properties of aqueous xanthan gum solutions with different concentrations were measured over a wide range of strain amplitudes and then the linear viscoelastic behavior in small amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields was investigated over a broad range of angular frequencies. In this article, both the strain amplitude and concentration dependencies of dynamic viscoelastic behavior were reported at full length from the experimental data obtained from strain-sweep tests. In addition, the linear viscoelastic behavior was explained in detail and the effects of angular frequency and concentration on this behavior were discussed using the well-known power-law type equations. Finally, a fractional derivative model originally developed by Ma and Barbosa-Canovas (1996) was employed to make a quantitative description of a linear viscoelastic behavior and then the applicability of this model was examined with a brief comment on its limitations. Main findings obtained from this study can be summarized as follows: (1) At strain amplitude range larger than 10%, the storage modulus shows a nonlinear strain-thinning behavior, indicating a decrease in storage modulus as an increase in strain amplitude. (2) At strain amplitude range larger than 80%, the loss modulus exhibits an exceptional nonlinear strain-overshoot behavior, indicating that the loss modulus is first increased up to a certain strain amplitude(${\gamma}_0{\approx}150%$) beyond which followed by a decrease in loss modulus with an increase in strain amplitude. (3) At sufficiently large strain amplitude range (${\gamma}_0>200%$), a viscous behavior becomes superior to an elastic behavior. (4) An ability to flow without fracture at large strain amplitudes is one of the most important differences between typical strong gel systems and concentrated xanthan gum solutions. (5) The linear viscoelastic behavior of concentrated xanthan gum solutions is dominated by an elastic nature rather than a viscous nature and a gel-like structure is present in these systems. (6) As the polymer concentration is increased, xanthan gum solutions become more elastic and can be characterized by a slower relaxation mechanism. (7) Concentrated xanthan gum solutions do not form a chemically cross-linked stable (strong) gel but exhibit a weak gel-like behavior. (8) A fractional derivative model may be an attractive means for predicting a linear viscoelastic behavior of concentrated xanthan gum solutions but classified as a semi-empirical relationship because there exists no real physical meaning for the model parameters.
Using a Rheometries Fluids Spectrometer (RFS II), the dynamic viscoelastic properties of aqueous poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) solutions in small amplitude oscillatory shear flow fields have been measured over a wide range of angular frequencies. The angular frequency dependence of the storage and loss moduli at various molecular weights and concentrations was reported in detail, and the result was interpreted using the concept of a Deborah number De. In addition, the experimentally determined critical angular frequency at which the storage and loss moduli become equivalent was compared with the calculated characteristic time (or its inverse value), and their physical significance in analyzing the dynamic viscoelastic behavior was discussed. Finally, the relationship between steady shear flow and dynamic viscoelstic properties was examined by evaluating the applicability of some proposed models that describe the correlations between steady flow viscosity and dynamic viscosity, dynamic fluidity, and complex viscosity. Main results obtained from this study can be summarized as follows: (1) At lower angular frequencies where De<1, the loss modulus is larger than the storage modulus. However, such a relation between the two moduli is reversed at higher angular frequencies where De>l, indicating that the elastic behavior becomes dominant to the viscous behavior at frequency range higher than a critical angular frequency. (2) A critical angular frequency is decreased as an increase in concentration and/or molecular weight. Both the viscous and elastic properties show a stronger dependence on the molecular weight than on the concentration. (3) A characteristic time is increased with increasing concentration and/or molecular weight. The power-law relationship holds between the inverse value of a characteristic time and a critical angular frequency. (4) Among the previously proposed models, the Cox-Merz rule implying the equivalence between the steady flow viscosity and the magnitude of the complex viscosity has the best validity. The Osaki relation can be regarded to some extent as a suitable model. However, the DeWitt, Pao and HusebyBlyler models are not applicable to describe the correlations between steady shear flow and dynamic viscoelastic properties.

A compression wave is attenuated or distorted as it propagates in a tube. The present study investigated the propagation characteristics of the compression waves which are generated by a train in a high-speed railway tunnel. A Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) difference scheme was applied to one-dimensional, unsteady viscous compressible flow. The numerical calculation involved the effects of wall friction, heat transfer and energy loss due to the friction heat in the boundary layer behind the propagating compression wave, and compared with the measurement results of a shock tube and a real tunnel. The present results show that attenuation of the compression wave in turbulent boundary layer is stronger than in laminar boundary layer, but nonlinear effect of the compression wave is greater in the laminar boundary layer. The energy loss due to the frictional heat had not influence on attenuation and distortion of the propagating compression waves.

Waterjet propulsion is widely used to thrust high speed marine vessels in excess of 30-35 knots by virtue of the high propulsive efficiency, good maneuverability, and less cavitation. From the aspect of power loss, approximately $7-9\%$ of the total power is lost in intake duct due to the flow separation, nonuniformity, etc. Thus, detail understanding of flow phenomena occurring within intake duct is essential to reduce the power loss, as well as noise and vibration. The present work solved 30 incompressible RANS equations to provide complicated viscous flow features of intake duct. The numerical results were compared with experiments and good agreements were obtained for three jet velocity ratios.
In this paper, a study on the frictional losses and dynamic behaviors of a reciprocating compression mechanism used in small refrigeration compressor is performed. In the problem formulation of the compressor dynamics, the viscous frictional force between piston and cylinder wall is considered in order to determine the coupled dynamic behaviors of piston and crankshaft supported on a thrust ball bearing. The solutions of the equations of motion of the reciprocating mechanism along with the time dependent Reynolds equations for the lubricating film between piston and cylinder wall and lubricant films of the journal bearings are obtained simultaneously. The hydrodynamic forces of journal bearings are calculated using finite bearing model and G$\hat{u}$m-bel boundary condition. And, a Newton-Raphson procedure was employed in solving the nonlinear equations of piston and crankshaft with a thrust ball bearing. The results explored the effects of design parameters on the frictional losses and dynamic stability of the compression mechanism.

It has been noted that the low frequency absorption coefficient of a porous sample placed in a standing wave tube is affected by the nature of the sample's edge constraint. The edge constraint has the effect of stiffening the solid phase of the sample, which itself can be strongly coupled to the material's fluid phase, and hence the incident sound field, by viscous means at low frequencies. In recent work it has also been shown that such a circumferential constraint causes the low frequency transmission loss of a layer of fibrous material to approach a finite low frequency limit that is proportional to the flow resistance of the layer and which is substantially higher than that of an unconstrained sample of the same material. However, it was also found that the benefit of the circumferential edge constraint was reduced in a transitional frequency range by a shearing resonance of the sample. Here it will be shown that the effect of that resonance can be mitigated or eliminated by adding additional axial and radial constraints running through the sample. It will also be shown that the constraint effect can be modeled closely by using a finite element procedure based on the Biot poroelastic theory. Implications for low frequency barrier design are also discussed.

We propose an equivalent model of a sintered metal mesh filter calculated by Ergun's equation and polynomial regression for the CFD analysis of breakaway devices at a hydrogen fueling station. CFD analysis of filters that cause high pressure loss is essential because breakaway devices in high-pressure hydrogen conditions require low pressure loss. A differential pressure experiment with a filter was performed in a low-pressure air condition considering similarities. An equivalent model was developed by deriving the resistance value by the polynomial regression using the experimental results. The results of CFD analysis using the equivalent model show that there was almost no error in the operating condition of the breakaway device compared to the experimental results. Through this work, we believe that the proposed equivalent model of a filter can be applied to the analysis of breakaway devices in hydrogen fueling stations. We will study how to optimize the shape and position of the filter in breakaway devices using the developed equivalent model.
In this study, the numerical analysis to estimate condensation heat and mass transfer of the condenser was carried out using the PMA (porous medium approach). In the PMA, the details of tube bundle in the condenser are replaced by the porous medium, and the flow resistance term is added in the momentum equation. In this regard, the PMA is quite helpful for the study of tube bundle in the large condenser. The pressure loss through tube bundle can be compensated by viscous and inertial momentum sink terms, which was validated numerically. Value of the pressure drop was compared to that of Butterworth correlation. Three dimensional analysis of condensation for McAllister condenser with the PMA was conducted using Fluent 6.2 and UDFs (use-defined functions). The result of condensation rate was analogous to previous results (experimental and numerical data).
A commercial CFD code is used to compute the 3-D viscous flow field within the inlet flow concentrator of the newly developed AHU (Air Handling Unit). To improve the performance of the AHU, the inlet air needs to be gradually accelerated to the fan's annular velocity without causing turbulence or flow separation. Three major geometric parameters were selected to specify the inlet shape of the AHU. The performance of the AHU could be measured by the inlet and outlet flow uniformity and the total pressure loss through the inlet flow concentrator. Several numerical calculations were carried out to determine the influence of the geometric parameters on the performance of the AHU. The best geometric values were decided to have efficient inlet shape with analyzing CFD calculation results.

The flows in an axial flow turbomachine are calculated numerically in the two sets of flow surfaces of H-S and B-B surfaces assuming that the flow is axisymmetric. The calculation is performed by regarding the governing equations as the quasi-Poisson's equations and using the finite element method for the flow regions divided into triangular elements. The results of numerical calculation agree comparatively well with the experimental results and it has been found that the distribution of an axial velocity component at the rotor exit is not necessarily uniform under the influences of the inlet guide vanes and the front shape of the hub even if the rotor is designed by the free-vortex theory. Also it has been found that the existence of the optimum value of the blade number can be estimated from the results of calculation of deviation angles at rotor exit if we consider the viscous flow-loss, and that the flows of B-B surfaces are affected very sensitively by the degree of satisfaction of Kutta condition.
