The effect of molecular parameters on the steady vortex behaviors in the inertial viscoelastic flow past a cylinder has been investigated. FENE-CR model was considered as a constitutive equation. A recently developed iterative solution method (Kim et al., (in press)) was found to be successfully applicable to the computation of inertial viscoelastic flows. The high-resolution computations were carried out to understand the detailed flow behaviors based on the efficient iterative solution method armed with ILU(0) type pre-conditioner and BiCGSTAB method. The discrete elastic viscous split stress-G/streamline upwind Petrov Galerkin (DEVSS-G/SUPG) formulation was adopted as a stabilization method. The vortex size decreased as elasticity increases. However, the vortex enhancement was also observed in the case of large extensibility, which means that the vortex behavior is strongly dependent upon the material parameters. The longitudinal gradient of normal stress was found to retard the formation of vortex, whereas the extensional viscosity played a role in the vortex enhancement. The present results are expected to be helpful for understanding the inertial vortex dynamics of viscoelastic fluids in the flow past a confined cylinder.
An energy method has been used for an elastic formulation of bending vibration and buckling analysis of laminated composite plates on two-parameter elastic foundations. A quasi-elastic method is used for the solution of viscoelastic analysis of the laminated composite plates. The third-order shear deformation theory is applied by using the double-fourier series. To validate the derived equations the obtained displacements for simply supported orthotropic plates on elastic foundations are compared with those of LUSAS program Numerical results of the viscoelastic bending vibration and buckling analysis are presented to show the effects of layup sequence number of layers material anisotropy and shear modulus of foundations.
This paper presents the analysis of friction master curves for a sliding elastomer on rough granite. The hysteresis friction is calculated using an analytical model that considers the energy spent during the local deformation of the rubber due to surface asperities. The adhesion friction is also considered for dry friction prediction. The viscoelastic modulus of the rubber compound and the large-strain effective modulus are obtained from dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). We accurately demonstrate the large strain of rubber that contacts with road substrate using the GW theory. We found that the rubber block deforms approximately to 40% strain. In addition, the viscoelastic master curve considering nonlinearity (at 40% strain) is derived based on the above finding. As viscoelasticity strongly depends on temperature, it can be assumed that the influence of velocity on friction is connected to the viscoelastic shift factors gained from DMA using the time-temperature superposition. In this study, we apply these shift factors to measure friction on dry granite over a velocity range for various temperatures. The measurements are compared to simulated hysteresis and adhesion friction using the Kluppel friction theory. Although friction results in the low-speed band match well with the simulation results, there are differences in the predicted and experimental results as the velocity increases. Thus, additional research is required for a more precise explanation of the viscoelastic material properties for better prediction of rubber friction characteristics.

Little attention has been paid to static-strain-dependence of dynamic complex modulus of viscolelastic materials in computational analysisso far. Current commercial Finite Element Method (FEM) codes do not take such characteristics into consideration in constitutive equations of viscoelastic materials. Recent experimental observations that static-strain-dependence of dynamic complex modulus of viscolelastic materials, especially filled rubbers, are significant, however, require that solutions somehow are necessary. In this study, a simple technique of using a commercial FEM code, ABAQUS, is introduced, which seems to be far more cost/time saving than development of a new software with such capabilities. A static-strain-dependent correction factor is used to reflect the influence of static-strains in Merman model, which is currently the base of the ABAQUS. The proposed technique is applied to viscoelastic components of rather complicated shape to predict the dynamic stiffness under static-strain and the predictions are compared with experimental results.

In this study the modal characteristics and responses of an asymmetric structure with added viscoelastic dampers were investigated for design parameters such as eccentricity of stiffness and added dampers, the loss factor of the damping materials used. For modal characteristics, variation of the quantities such as natural frequencies, modal damping ratios, modal participation factors, and dynamic amplification factors were observed, and displacements at flexible and stiff edges, and at center of mass were obtained. Based on the results, the problem of the optimum damper distribution to minimize the torsional effects was addressed, and the proposed method for optimum damper distribution was applied to a multi-story structure to verify the applicability Finally the effect of viscous and viscoelastic dampers were compared by varying the loss factor of the viscoelastic material.

In this work, mathematical modeling of the passive vibration controls of a three-layered sandwich beam under hard excitation is developed. Kelvin-Voigt Viscoelastic model is considered in the core. The formulation is based on the higher-order zig-zag theories where the normal and shear deformations are taken into account only in the viscoelastic core. The dynamic behaviour of the beam is represented by a complex highly nonlinear ordinary differential equation. The method of multiple scales is adopted to solve the analytical frequency-amplitude relationships in the super-harmonic resonance case. Parametric studies are carried out by using HSDT and first-order deformation theory by considering different geometric and material parameters.
This research studies the primary resonance and nonlinear vibratory responses of multilayer functionally graded shallow (MFGS) shells under external excitations. The shells considered with functionally graded porous (FGP) core and resting on two types of nonlinear viscoelastic foundations (NVEF) governed by either a linear model with two parameters of Winkler and Pasternak foundations or a nonlinear model of hardening/softening cubic stiffness augmented by a Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic model. The shells considered have three layers, sandwiched by functionally graded (FG), FGP, and FG materials. To investigate the influence of various porosity distributions, two types of FGP middle layer cores are considered. With the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT), Hooke's law, and von-Kármán equation, the stress-strain relations for the MFGS shells with FGP core are developed. The governing equations of the shells are consequently derived. For the sake of higher accuracy and reliability, the P-T method is implemented in numerically analyzing the vibration, and the method of multiple scales (MMS) as one of the perturbation methods is used to investigate the primary resonance. The results of the present research are verified with the results available in the literature. The analytical results are compared with the P-T method. The influences of material, geometry, and nonlinear viscoelastic foundation parameters on the responses of the shells are illustrated.

With growing interests in using bacterial biopolymers in geotechnical practices, identifying mechanical properties of soft gel-like biopolymers is important in predicting their efficacy in soil modification and treatment. As one of the promising candidates, dextran was found to be produced by Leuconostoc mesenteroides. The model bacteria utilize sucrose as working material and synthesize both soluble and insoluble dextran which forms a complex and inhomogeneous polymer network. However, the traditional rheometer has a limitation to capture in situ properties of inherently porous and inhomogeneous biopolymers. Therefore, we used the particle tracking microrheology to characterize the material properties of the dextran polymer. TEM images revealed a range of pore size mostly less than $20{\mu}m$, showing large pores > $2{\mu}m$ and small pores within the solid matrix whose sizes are less than $1{\mu}m$. Microrheology data showed two distinct regimes in the bacterial dextran, purely viscous pore region of soluble dextran and viscoelastic region of the solid part of insoluble dextran matrix. Diffusive beads represented the soluble dextran dissolved in an aqueous phase, of which viscosity was three times higher than the growth medium viscosity. The local properties of the insoluble dextran were extracted from the results of the minimally moving beads embedded in the dextran matrix or trapped in small pores. At high frequency (${\omega}>0.2Hz$), the insoluble dextran showed the elastic behavior with the storage modulus of ~0.1 Pa. As frequency decreased, the insoluble dextran matrix exhibited the viscoelastic behavior with the decreasing storage modulus in the range of ${\sim}0.1-10^{-3}Pa$ and the increasing loss modulus in the range of ${\sim}10^{-4}-1\;Pa$. The obtained results provide a compilation of frequency-dependent rheological or viscoelastic properties of soft gel-like porous biopolymers at the particular conditions where soil bacteria produce bacterial biopolymers in subsurface.

The bending and buckling effect for carbon nanotube-reinforced composite (CNTRC) beams can be evaluated by developing the theory of third shear deformation (TSDT). This study examines beams supported by viscoelastic foundations, where single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are dispersed and oriented within a polymer matrix. Four patterns of reinforcement are used for the CNTRC beams. The rule of mixtures is assessed for the material properties of CNTRC beams. The effective functionally graded materials (FGM) properties are studied by considering three different uneven distribution types of porosity. The damping coefficient is considered to investigate the viscosity effect on the foundation in addition to Winkler's and Pasternak's parameters. The accuracy of the current theory is inspected with multiple comparison works. Moreover, the effects of different beam parameters on the CNTRC beam bending and buckling over a viscoelastic foundation are discussed. The results demonstrated that the O-beam is the weakest type of CNTRC beam to resist buckling and flexure loads, whereas the X-beam is the strongest. Moreover, it is indicated that the presence of porosity in the beams decreases the stiffness and increases deflection. In comparison, the deflection was reduced in the presence of a viscoelastic foundation.
The present paper aims to study the influence of the magnetic field and initial stress on the 2-D problem of generalized thermo-viscoelastic material with voids subject to thermal loading by a laser pulse in the context of the Lord-Shulman and the classical dynamical coupled theories. The analytical expressions for the physical quantities are obtained in the physical domain by using the normal mode analysis. These expressions are calculated numerically for a specific material and explained graphically. Comparisons are made with the results predicted by the Lord-Shulman and the coupled theories in the presence and absence of the initial stress and the magnetic field.
