In the revised 2015 curriculum, it is emphasized that fostering of the students as the capable 'creativity-convergent' individuals can be achieved by offering them the opportunities to cultivate the basic knowledge in liberal arts, society and scientific technologies through schooling. While retaining the basic principle of 'fostering creative people', this fundamentally-reformed curriculum involves improvements in the elementary and middle school curriculums in response to the national and social demands in which active responses to the changes in the educational environments and amelioration of the problems posed in the field applications are required. Accordingly, a novel future-oriented curriculum is necessary for the classroom teaching, and to realize the goal, the 'Competence-oriented Social Multimedia Computer Network Curriculum' adopting the virtualization and the 'Bottom-up' methods has been proposed in this paper as a feasible and practical curriculum. Our curriculum will be compared with the recent Cisco high school curriculum and analyzed contemplating recent curriculums in US, UK, Japan and India. Two 1-year practice courses are examined to prove the validity of the proposed curriculum for a period of two years as a qualitative research project. The results of the comparative analysis will show that our proposed curriculum is superior to the Cisco high school curriculum in the aspects of economic feasibility and learning satisfaction.

Virtualization with hypervisors is one of emerging topics in multicore processors for space. Hypervisors are software layers to make several independent virtualized environments on one processor. Since all hardware resources are virtualized and distributed only by hypervisors, overall performance of processors can be improved by fully utilizing the resources. However at the same time, there are overheads for virtualizing and distributing hardware resources. Satellites are one of hard real time systems, and performance degradation with overheads should be analyzed thoroughly. Previous research on the overheads focused on single core systems. Even the overheads were analyzed in multicore systems, SMP environment was not fully included. This paper builds SMP environment with XtratuM, one of hypervisors for space missions, and analyzes performance degradation with overheads. Two boards of GR712RC with 2 LEON3FT CPUs and GR740 with 4 LEON4 CPUs are used in experiments. On each board, SMP benchmark functions are executed on SMP environment with XtratuM and on that without XtratuM respectively. Results are analyzed to find timing characteristics including overheads. Finally, applicability of the XtratuM to flight software in SMP is also reviewed.

A virtual machine lease service in the cloud computing environment has been implemented using the open source cloud computing platform, OpenNebula. In addition, a web-based cloud user interface is developed for both convenient resource management and efficient service access. The present virtual machine allocation scheme adopted in OpenNebula has performance reduction problem because of not considering CPU allocation scheduler of the virtualization software. In order to address this problem we have considered both the priority of the idle CPU resources of the cluster and credit scheduler of Xen, which resulted in performance improvement of the OpenNebula virtual machine scheduler. The experimental results showed that the proposed allocation scheme provided more virtual machine creations and more CPU resource allocations for cloud service.
Recent advances in medical science have made people live longer, which has affected many aspects of life, such as caregiver burden, increasing cost of healthcare, increasing number of disabled and depressive disorder persons, and so on. Researchers are now focused on elderly living assistance services in smart home environments. In recent years, assisted living technologies have rapidly grown due to a faster growing aging society. Many smart devices are now interconnected within the home network environment and such a home setup supports collaborations between those devices based on the Internet of Things (IoT). One of the major challenges in providing elderly living assistance services is to consider each individual's requirements of different needs. In order to solve this, the virtualization of physical things, as well as the collaboration and composition of services provided by these physical things should be considered. In order to meet these challenges, Web of Objects (WoO) focuses on the implementation aspects of IoT to bring the assorted real world objects with the web applications. We proposed a semantic modelling technique for manual and semi-automated service composition. The aim of this work is to propose a framework to enable RESTful web services composition using semantic ontology for elderly living assistance services creation in WoO based smart home environment.

Recently, many attempts to run numerical ocean models in cloud computing environments have been tried actively. A cloud computing environment can be an effective means to implement numerical ocean models requiring a large-scale resource or quickly preparing modeling environment for global or large-scale grids. Many commercial and private cloud computing systems provide technologies such as virtualization, high-performance CPUs and instances, ether-net based high-performance-networking, and remote direct memory access for High Performance Computing (HPC). These new features facilitate ocean modeling experimentation on commercial cloud computing systems. Many scientists and engineers expect cloud computing to become mainstream in the near future. Analysis of the performance and features of commercial cloud services for numerical modeling is essential in order to select appropriate systems as this can help to minimize execution time and the amount of resources utilized. The effect of cache memory is large in the processing structure of the ocean numerical model, which processes input/output of data in a multidimensional array structure, and the speed of the network is important due to the communication characteristics through which a large amount of data moves. In this study, the performance of the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS), the High Performance Linpack (HPL) benchmarking software package, and STREAM, the memory benchmark were evaluated and compared on commercial cloud systems to provide information for the transition of other ocean models into cloud computing. Through analysis of actual performance data and configuration settings obtained from virtualization-based commercial clouds, we evaluated the efficiency of the computer resources for the various model grid sizes in the virtualization-based cloud systems. We found that cache hierarchy and capacity are crucial in the performance of ROMS using huge memory. The memory latency time is also important in the performance. Increasing the number of cores to reduce the running time for numerical modeling is more effective with large grid sizes than with small grid sizes. Our analysis results will be helpful as a reference for constructing the best computing system in the cloud to minimize time and cost for numerical ocean modeling.
The workloads of large high-performance computing (HPC) scientific applications are steadily becoming "bursty" due to variable resource demands throughout their execution life-cycles. However, the over-provisioning of virtual resources for optimal performance during execution remains a key challenge in the scheduling of scientific HPC applications. While over-provisioning of virtual resources guarantees peak performance of scientific application in virtualized environments, it results in increased amounts of idle resources that are unavailable for use by other applications. Herein, we proposed a memory resource reconfiguration approach that allows the quick release of idle memory resources for new applications in OS-level virtualized systems, based on the applications resource-usage pattern profile data. We deployed a scientific workflow application in Docker, a light-weight OS-level virtualized system. In the proposed approach, memory allocation is fine-tuned to containers at each stage of the workflows execution life-cycle. Thus, overall memory resource utilization is improved.
In this paper, we propose an effective memory test environment, called a virtualized kernel, for 64bit multi-core computing environments. The term of effectiveness means that we can test all of the physical memory space, even the memory space occupied by the kernel itself, without rebooting. To obtain this capability, our virtualized kernel provides four mechanisms. The first is direct accessing to physical memory both in kernel and user mode, which allows applying various test patterns to any place of physical memory. The second is making kernel virtualized so that we can run two or more kernel image at the different location of physical memory. The third is isolating memory space used by different instances of virtualized kernel. The final is kernel hibernation, which enables the context switch between kernels. We have implemented the proposed virtualized kernel by modifying the latest Linux kernel 2.6.18 running on Intel Xeon system that has two 64bit dual-core CPUs with hyper-threading technology and 2GB main memory. Experimental results have shown that the two instances of virtualized kernel run at the different location of physical memory and the kernel hibernation works well as we have designed. As the results, the every place of physical memory can be tested without rebooting.
There exist virtual machine scheduling delays in virtualized environment in which virtual machines share physical resources. Many resource management systems have been proposed to provide better application QoS through monitoring and analyzing application performance and resource utilization of virtual machines. However, those management systems don't consider virtual machine scheduling delays, result in incorrect application performance evaluation and QoS violations In this paper, we propose an application behavior analysis considering the scheduling delays, and a virtual machine priority allocation scheme based on the analysis to improve the application response time by minimizing the overall virtual machine scheduling delays.
NVMe(Non-Volatile Memory Express) SSD(Solid State Drive) is a high-performance storage that makes use of flash memory as a storage cell, PCIe as an interface and NVMe as a protocol on the interface. It supports multiple I/O queues which makes it feasible to process parallel-I/Os on multi-core environments and to provide higher bandwidth than SATA SSDs. Hence, NVMe SSD is considered as a next generation-storage for data-center and cloud computing system. However, in the virtualization system, the performance of NVMe SSD is not fully utilized due to the bottleneck of the software I/O stack. Especially, when it uses I/O stack of the hypervisor or the host operating system like Xen and KVM, I/O performance degrades seriously due to doubled-I/O stack between host and virtual machine. In this paper, we propose a new I/O engine, called Direct-AIO (Direct-Asynchronous I/O) engine, that can access NVMe SSD directly for I/O performance improvements on QEMU emulator. We develop our proposed I/O engine and analyze I/O performance differences between the existed I/O engine and Direct-AIO engine.
