  • Virtual community is a social aggregation to attain some goals in an IT-supported virtual space (Lee et al., 2002). As lots of virtual communities generate robust and reliable outputs with low control and low incentive, previous researchers was interested in the questions, "why do they participate?" or "how are they controlled?". But. as Katz (1964) said, the most important part of the high-performing organization is the behaviors of members in the organization. Therefore, this research is to examine the relationship between the performance and the behaviors of participants in the virtual community. First, we propose 6 types of behaviors related to high performance in the virtual community: 'Continuous Attendance', 'Complying with the organizational value, policies, and regulations', 'Protection', 'Suggestion for the improving', 'Self-training', and 'Favorable behavior'. The six types of behaviors are extracted from the framework of Katz (1964) and Brief and Motowidlo (1986). The reason why each behavior is positively related with high-performance is that those who continuously attend have more responsibility than temporary participants do; complying with the rules of a virtual community means that they may make more reliable outcome; 'Protection' is one of the prosocial-behaviors and those who protect the community may concern the benefit of the virtual community when they participate: those who suggest some ideas for improvement may contribute to the virtual community; 'Self-training' behavior means that participants really want to have high quality in their contribution: those who have 'Favorable attitude' consider other members in the virtual community when they participate. Then, we perform an empirical analysis with the survey from participants in the Knowledge service of Naver.com, to show those behaviors are associated with the high-performance. To make the measurement for the six behaviors, we use CVR (content validity ratio) method (Lawshe, 1975), interviewing 12 experts. The dependent variable, performance of participation, is measured by 'ratio of selected answer' given by the Naver.com. We use email survey. We sent 1200 emails to randomly selected participants in the knowledge service and received 282 responses. The results of our empirical analysis show that 4('Continuous Attendance', 'Suggestion for the improving', 'Self-training', 'Favorable attitude') are positively related to the performance, but 2('Complying with the organizational value, policies, and regulations' and 'Protection') are not significant. In line with Fitzgerald (2006), we expect that participants in the virtual community may behave similarly to employees in the off-line firms for the high performance. But 2 behaviors have different results. The reason that the 'Complying with the organizational value' behavior is not sufficiently related to performance is that the motivation of participants is more related to intrinsic pleasure or altruism than external reward. Also, the 'Protection' behavior has no significant relationship with performance, which means that the high-performing participants have little concern about the problems in the community.

  • This study investigated knowledge browsing behavior as the factor affecting the increase of knowledge sharing intention. To conduct this study in the specific context of knowledge seeking and sharing behavior of virtual community members, literature on knowledge seeking behavior, meta-knowledge, and knowledge sharing intention was reviewed. Structural Equation Modeling was conducted to analyze survey data to test the research model of this study. The result showed that knowledge browsing have positive effects on creating of virtual community members' subject knowledge and meta-knowledge, which, in turn, affected positively their knowledge sharing intention. One of the main contributions of this study is that knowledge seeking behavior influence one's knowledge sharing intention in a virtual community. Organization managers should consider knowledge seeking behavior as not only a self-interested, consuming activity, but also a productive one through its function of constructing subject knowledge and meta-knowledge.

  • In a rapidly changing business environment, the improvement of managerial techniques through IT utilization brings about remarkable increases in profitability and redesign of work process for better performances. IT innovation by electronic instruments such as ICT e-business provides accelerates forming inter-organizational information network and helps them benchmark the best practices of advanced organizations. A new shift of paradigm by e-business across all enterprises has turned the traditional aspects of inter-organizational competition and relationship into a form of collaboration. Collaboration enables business activities in parallel position among companies and facilitates cooperation between partner enterprises. Lately, the concept of 'Synchronization' is emerging beyond dimension of cooperation between networks, and the most concepts related to it are converging into 'Collaboration Networks'. This research observes a virtual organization as a form of collaborative networks, and measures the degree of virtualization of Korean collaborative organizations.

  • Interventional radiology (IR) embolization requires image guidance to steer catheters to the site of bleeding, where embolic agents such as Gelfoam or coils are administered to stem blood flow. In addition to treating iatrogenic trauma, embolization is suitable for injuries precluding surgery such as blush-bleeding of the liver or kidney and for locating and treating intimal blood vessel tears. However, during hospital off-hours (such as nights and holidays), experienced IR personnel are not always available. In such situations, there is a dire need to build a coordinated IR team to treat seriously injured patients rapidly and reliably. This article reviews the current principles and techniques used in IR such as virtual fluoroscopy and their usefulness, and makes a convincing case for emergency IR.

  • Korea, one of the members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), has been one of the fastest growing countries in the world since World War Ⅱ. However, Korea has recently suffered from an economic crisis which has been mainly attributed to a fluctuating foreign currency rate. The future of Korea relies on how the country prepares and copes with the crises. There have been enormous effort to solve current economic crisis. However, preparation to the anticipated crisis is much more important than solving problems after the crisis. Recently, the virtual crisis preparation team approach appears to be one of the effective alternatives to cope with various crises. The objectives of this study ale to (1) show that crisis preparation is very important factor for the Korean government to one with the current and future crises; (2) to prove that the virtual crisis preparation team is one of the better alternatives to solve crisis; (3) to suggest a virtual crisis preparation team model can be adapted to the Korean situation.

  • Most of companies related to the area of B2B electronic commerce are making their efforts to innovate their existing business process into new designed process based on the concept of virtual enterprise. Virtual enterprise can take on many forms and definitions. Nevertheless, the rationale for this business model is clear cooperate to compete, the virtual organization advocates collaboration, partnerships, alliance and similar ideas. This studyintends to suggest an empirical clue to test several hypotheses related to the influence of environmental. organizational, and technological factor to the successful implementation of virtual enterprise in automobile industry. This research surveyed 91 corporations in Korean automobile part industry. Among those samples 86 data of corporate general managers turned out to be statistically valid. This study performed the factor analysis, Cronbach-alpha test. Pearson correlation analysis for testing the validity and the reliability of this research. The results of factor analysis and reliability test indicate that thirty issues to be surveyed are to be grouped into nine factors. The result of multiple regression shows that the influencing factors of eight independent variables on a dependent variable are cooperation between partners, information intensity, IT compatibility, IS maturity. The partners in the strategic alliance will have to trust each other in carrying out their designated roles and responsibilities. and supplying the correct information critical for creating value in virtual business environment.

  • In this research, fractal approach is applied to the realization of a virtual enterprise. Virtual enterprise is a temporarily built organization to cope with new business opportunity. It is composed of diverse business partners such as suppliers, manufacturers, customers, and service providers in value chains. Therefore, communication and interoperability problems between heterogeneous participants are one of the main concerns in developing collaboration models of a virtual enterprise. Fractal-based reference model can be a solution for this problem. The term 'fractal' is used to represent a participant of the value chains. There are many advantages when participants try to embody fractal-based collaboration model such as; (1) no restriction of inner configuration, (2) guarantee of autonomy, (3) easy implementation of interfaces, etc. Fractals are self-similar, however, this does not mean that they should have same configuration. In this paper, a fractal-based collaboration model for a virtual enterprise is proposed and described with (1) a formal formulation of fractal concept, (2) functional requirements and interfaces, and (3) a goal model as a driving force of the virtual enterprise.

  • Windows are essential and important architectural elements for the organization of architectural spaces, and they give character to the space and have a great impact on the reaction of users. Virtual windows are installed to activate architectural spaces such as underground spaces where windows cannot be installed, and to provide a sense of psychological security to users in hospital clinics, etc. In this study, we reviewed the literature and collected and analyzed the precedents of virtual windows to discuss the factors necessary to improve the realism of virtual windows. The factors that affect the realism of virtual windows are further grouped into five categories: 1. Use of reproduced images or videos for views, 2. Representation of temporality, 3. Responsiveness to changes in the observer's perspective, 4. Realistic reproduction of sunlight, and 5. Provision of non-visual sensory elements. Virtual windows are not just a replacement for traditional windows, but a way to realize a virtual environment using digital media, and it is necessary to expand the discussion to the realization of the virtual environment and the relationship with architectural elements.
