An Account of Virtual and Augmented Reality in Educational Institutions

  • This paper argues for modern technologies in the educational process. It specifically outlines issues germane to virtual and augmented reality. It begins with an account on virtual reality and augmented reality, and touches on their characteristics, the advantages, obstacles and applications. It also discusses some relevant studies that emphasized the role of virtual and augmented reality in education, the difference between two terms. The paper ends with a note of vision on how to activate them in educational institutions.

  • Virtual and augmented reality technologies provide access to learning materials and improve the organization of a modern library's media space. This article aims to identify the significance and role of virtual and augmented reality technologies in the modern library's media space organization. Methodology. The research uses a university library case study methodology to empirically investigate virtual and augmented reality technologies. Results. Virtual and augmented reality technologies provide research and improve learning outcomes by engaging students and learners with significant interest in such technologies. Libraries offer users the opportunity to create their VR content through available software. Students can test their VR content in the libraries' labs. Libraries support access to a variety of virtual and augmented reality content. The content is accessed using "virtual reality headsets" for viewing and workstations with "authoring software and loanable 360 cameras" for creating. The library lab is a space to support students' digital creativity and research through virtual and augmented reality. There are 3D Design Labs within the libraries as a medium to large group design learning spaces with virtual reality technology. Libraries form a media space where users can create videos, podcasts, portfolios, edit media, and book tours, and students and researchers can explore different scientific knowledge. In this way, technology ensures that risks in learning are minimized as opposed to hands-on seminars and classes.

  • In this study, in line with the era of the fourth industrial revolution, general concepts, technologies, trends, and examples of virtual reality and augmented reality were examined, and based on this, a plan that could be applied to libraries in the future was proposed. As a result of the study, first, it is necessary to construct a smart space as an experiential play space that can satisfy cultural desires transcending time and space by providing immersive contents using 4th technology such as VR and AR. Second, it is necessary to expand experiential cultural support services through VR, AR and MR. Third, to develop educational contents based on augmented reality technology. In order to apply and activate virtual reality and augmented reality in libraries in the future, based on a survey of librarians and users of public libraries, a survey on the application status, satisfaction, and demand of current public libraries should be conducted.

  • The study considers trends and prospects for developing virtual (augmented) reality and civil transactions in relation to digital property. In jurisprudence, there is a need to determine the legal status of virtual and augmented reality to regulate legal relations in the digital environment. Legal relations using new digital technologies require the creation of new legislative approaches and rules of their legal regulation. The article dwells on the legal status of virtual (augmented) reality and determines the methods of regulating legal relations in the sphere of digital property. The study utilized methods for collecting single and multiple facts in order to identify the main trends in the civil circulation of digital assets, as well as private law methods. The methods of generalization, concreteness, induction and deduction reveal the legal nature and main features of virtual (augmented) reality and digital property. The paper highlights the specifics of virtual reality and civil transactions in relation to digital assets. The research has concluded that the sale, exchange and other actions with digital objects in virtual reality have distinctive features, while digital property has also unique characteristics since it is involved in civil circulation and legal relations.

  • 지난 수십 년 동안 컴퓨터와 정보기술의 발달로 가상현실 (Virtual Reality) 을 이용한 시스템이 활발히 연구되었다. 가상현실은 건설관리 영역에서도 이용되는데 건설공정을 시각화 할 수 있으며 건설 환경 및 자원을 고려한 시뮬레이션을 통해 프로젝트 및 건설관리에 많은 도움을 준다. 그러나 가상현실은 모든 것을 컴퓨터 그래픽으로 표현함으로 실재세계와 같은 현실감을 표현하는 데에는 어려움이 있다. 따라서 현실세계와 가상의 세계를 혼합하여 표현하는 Mixed Reality 가 대두되고 있으며 이 중에서도 현실세계에 무게를 둔 증강현실 (Augmented Reality) 에 대한 연구가 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 본 연구를 통해 국내 건설업계에 Augmented Reality를 소개하고자 하였으며 해외 연구사례 및 동향을 분석하여 국내 건설업에 Augmented Reality를 적용할 수 있는 방안을 모색하였다. 마지막으로 제안된 방안의 실현을 위한 지속적인 연구가 요구되는데 이를 위해 향후 연구 전략을 수립하였다.

실내 가상 경기를 위한 햅틱 AR 스포츠 기술 (Haptic AR Sports Technologies for Indoor Virtual Matches)

  • Outdoor sports activities have been restricted by serious air pollution, such as fine dust and yellow dust, and abnormal meteorological change, such as heatwave and heavy snow. These environmental problems have rapidly increased the demand for indoor sports activities. Virtual sports, such as virtual golf, virtual baseball, virtual soccer, etc., allow playing various sports games without going outdoors. Indoor sports industries and markets have seen rapid growth since the advent of virtual sports. Most virtual sports platforms use screen-based virtual reality techniques, which are why they are called screen sports. However, these platforms cannot support various sports games, especially virtual match games, such as squash, boxing, and so on, because existing screen-based virtual reality sports techniques use real balls and players. This article presents screen-based haptic-augmented reality technologies for a new virtual sports platform. The new platform does not use real balls and players to solve the limitations of previous platforms. Here, various technologies, including human motion tracking, human action recognition, haptic feedback, screen-based augmented-reality systems, and augmented-reality sports content, are unified for the new virtual sports platform. From these haptic-augmented reality technologies, the proposed platform supports sports games, including indoor virtual matches, that existing virtual sports platforms cannot support.

  • 본 논문에서는 항공소프트웨어 인증 규정 발전 동향을 파악하고, 증강현실 및 가상현실 소프트웨어의 항공정비 산업 적용을 위해 항공에 최적화된 인증 규정을 소개한다. 이 규정은 항공정비 산업에 적용된 증강현실 및 가상현실 소프트웨어에 엄격한 인증 규정을 적용함으로써 항공정비 산업에 적용된 증강현실 및 가상현실 소프트웨어의 안정성과 신뢰성을 제공할 것으로 기대된다. 기존에 사용되는 DO-178B, DO-178C가 규정하기 힘든 문제들을 고려한 인증 규정을 제시하고자 한다.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the features of inquiry activities using technology in the 2015 revised elementary science digital textbooks. For this, we analyzed the features of inquiry context and inquiry method presented in inquiry activities using three kinds of technology: Virtual experiment, virtual reality and augmented reality. As a result, firstly, the most common types of 77 inquiry activities were realistic type which shows the phenomenon actually and vividly as possible and realistic-abstract type which shows the phenomena with the abstract concepts. Second, the ways of using three technologies were different depending on the processes of inquiry and the sub-domains of science. For example, virtual experiment technologies were mostly used in the contents of physics and chemistry with the inquiry context of realistic-abstract type for investigating the relationship between variables of experiments and describing the phenomena mechanically. On the other hand, virtual reality and augmented reality techniques tended to be used more frequently in biology and earth science contents with the inquiry context of realistic type for observing and describing the phenomena. Finally, we discussed educational implications in terms of developing and applying technology-based inquiry activities.

홀로렌즈를 활용한 혼합현실 교육 콘텐츠 제작 방법 (How to create mixed reality educational contents using Hololens)

  • 몰입감(Immersive), 상호작용(Interactive), 지능화(Intelligent)의 특징을 통해 높은 현실감을 제공하는 실감콘텐츠 제작 기술로서 가상현실(Virtual Reality), 증강현실(Augmented Reality), 혼합현실(Mixed Reality)이 있다. 이러한 실감콘텐츠는 재난훈련이나 우주여행 등과 같이 위험하고 고비용이거나 체험이 불가능한 상황을 구현하여 간접체험이 가능하여 안전성, 효율성 확보가 용이하다는 점에서 교육 분야의 혁신 기술로 등장하고 있다. 최근 우리나라 정부기관에서도 교육용 실감콘텐츠 제작을 위한 지원을 많이 하고 있어 에듀테크 산업체를 통해 다양한 교육용 실감콘텐츠가 개발되고 있다. 따라서 가상증강현실 교육 콘텐츠는 비교적 많이 개발되고 있으나 교육에 보다 효율적인 혼합현실 기반 교육콘텐츠는 매우 부족한 상황이다. 본 연구에서는 홀로렌즈를 활용한 혼합현실 교육콘텐츠 제작에 있어 기본적인 방법을 고찰하고 이를 기반으로 과학실험 콘텐츠 제작 방안을 제안한다. 홀로렌즈를 활용하면 일반 데스크 탑 PC가 필요 없고 실시간 정보 공유가 가능하여 교사가 학생을 실시간 관리 및 평가를 할 수 있으므로 교육에 매우 효과적이다.

모바일 증강 현실 게임 플랫폼 및 UI 기술 개발 동향 (Development Trends of Mobile Augmented Reality Game Platform and User Interface)

  • 올해 구글, 애플, 페이스북 등 글로벌 IT 기업들은 모바일 증강현실 플랫폼을 연이어 출시하였다. 기존 증강현실 기술은 AR글래스 또는 탱고폰과 같은 전용 디바이스가 필요하였으나, 이제는 일반 안드로이드폰과 아이폰에서도 쉽게 증강현실을 경험할 수 있게 되었다. 포켓몬고 게임 이후 관심이 높아진 모바일 증강현실 게임 시장도 더욱 활성화될 전망이다. 본 고에서는 모바일 증강현실 게임을 위한 증강현실 플랫폼 기술과 ETRI 프로토타입을 포함한 모바일 증강현실 게임 개발 사례를 사용자 인터페이스를 중심으로 소개한다.
