  • This study intends to delineate the characteristics of various perspectives on the nature of science (NOS) through the textbook analysis. Thus, centering on a science textbook called Science Laboratory Experiments, this study analyzes the elements of the NOS from three different perspectives: the consensus view, features of science (FOS), and family resemblance approach (FRA). While the consensus view highlights the similar elements of the NOS across the topics, the FOS is concerned about empirical ways for doing science. The FRA rather focuses on socio-cultural aspects of science activities. While the consensus view is useful to reify the features of the NOS, the FRA helps to understand science from various viewpoints. Regarding the philosophical account for three perspectives, all of them are ambiguous to some extent. The consensus view holds contradictory dispositions e.g., relativism vs. (post-)positivism, and critical realism and instrumentalism. The FOS supports empirical tradition but cannot effectively cope with the anomalous situation. The FRA is useful to show up the ways of science in both microscopic (personal) and macroscopic (social) viewpoints. However, the broader concept about science may mislead understanding of the NOS. Consequently, this study provides some implication for improving the framework of the NOS and teaching the NOS in the classroom.

  • The Maa speaking Torobo people inhabiting the southern portion of the Mau Escarpment in Kenya approach both individual and community survival from a relational orientation focused on ethnic identity and responsibility. This social responsibility to the tribe is in stark contrast to Torobo relationships with other ethnic groups. The purpose of the research is twofold. First, the paper explores how folkloric language through a trickster image reflects important cultural and social ideals, understandings, and patterns of thought in Torobo world view. A second purpose is to offer ethnographic information to scholars and students' alike necessary for world view studies of eastern Africa specifically focused on the interplay between anthropomorphic tales and the social context in which these stories are utilized. The key research question for this analysis asks how the trickster image in Torobo folklore conceptualize the life experience. A Torobo folktale entitled, The Clever Hare, is the text chosen for analysis with the hare character as the protagonist. A second query explores the importance of the trickster image in understanding Torobo world view categories of Self and Other. The analysis contributes an ethnographic perspective for the world view categories of Self and Other as well as trickster folklore by examining the nature of Torobo-ness using the tale of the cunning hare as a research tool.

  • A significant deficiency of most computer models used for stream floodplain analysis, is that the locations of structures impacted by flood waters, such as roads, buildings, and bridges, cannot be effectively compared to the floodplain location. The purpose of this study is the integration of the HEC River Analysis System(HEC-RAS) with ArcView geographic information system to develop a regional model for floodplain determination and representation. Also this study presents to enable two- and three-dimensional floodplain mapping and analysis in the ArcView. The methodology is applied to a Yeoju of Kyunggi-do, located in South Han River Basin. A digital terrain model is synthesized from HEC-RAS cross-sectional data and a digital elevation model of the study area. The flood plain data developed in ArcView was imported into HEC-RAS where it was combined with the field surveyed channel data in order to construct full floodplain cross sections that reflected accurate channel and overbank data for the HEC-RAS model. The flood plain limits could be expressed more accurately on ArcView by using water level data to be computed in HEC-RAS program. The computed water surface elevations and information of cross-section must be manually plotted in order to delineate floodplains. The resulting of this study provided a good representation of the general landscape and contained additional detail within the stream channel. Overall, the results of the study indicate that GIS combined with HEC-RAS is proven to be very useful and efficient for the automatic generation of flood maps, and an effective environment for floodplain mapping and analysis.

  • In this paper, a portable rotor bar fault diagnosis system for small 3 phase induction motors is suggested. For portable real-tine diagnosis system, an USB-DAQ board for collecting the 3 phase current data, three current probes, and a notebook computer are used. The LabVIEW graphical language is used for filtering, analysis, storing, and monitoring the current data. The three phase stator current are filtered and transformed to frequency level by FIT. An analysis window programed by LabVIEW is located in front panel to show the FIT results and this suggested window has a zooming function to detect the fault feature more easily near the feature frequency range which is varying by the slip frequency. To show the possibility of portable rotor bar diagnosis system, three types(healthy, one rotor bar fault, two rotor bar fault) of rotor bar are intentionally prepared and compared by the suggested window of front panel. Experimental results are shown that a suggested diagnosis system is applicable to portable diagnosis system and the rotor bar fault is detected by the frequency window in front panel programed in LabVIEW graphical language.
