  • Deinterlacing is a method to convert interlaced video, including two fields (even and odd), to progressive video. It can be divided into spatial and temporal methods. The deinterlacing method in the spatial domain can easily be hardware-implemented, but yields image degradation if information about the deinterlaced pixel does not exist in the same field. On the other hand, the method in the temporal domain yields a deinterlaced image with higher quality but uses more memory, and hardware implementation is more difficult. Furthermore, the deinterlacing method in the temporal domain degrades image quality when motion is not estimated properly. The proposed method is for deinterlacing in the spatial domain. It uses several deinterlacing methods according to statistical characteristics in neighboring pixel locations. In this procedure, the proposed method uses the C4.5 algorithm, a typical classification algorithm based on entropy for choosing optimal methods from among the candidates. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms previous deinterlacing methods in terms of objective and subjective image quality.

  • In this work, an efficient lifting implementation of invertible deinterlacing is proposed. The invertible deinterlacing is a technique developed for intra-frame-based video coding as a preprocessing. Unlike the conventional deinterlacing, it preserves the sampling density and has the invertibility. For a special selection of filters, it is shown that the deinterlacing can be implemented efficiently by an in-place computation. It is also shown that the deinterlacing can be combined with the lifting discrete wavelet transform (BWT) employed in JPEG2000. A bit modification of the original lifting DWT is shown to provide the simultaneous implementation of deinterlacing. This fact makes the proposed technique attractive for the application to Motion-JPEG2000. The inverse transform and the reversible lifting implementation are also discussed.

  • In this paper, a motion adaptive deinterlacing algorithm is proposed. It consists of three parts: (1) modified edge-based line average, (2) pixel-based consequent five-field motion detection, and (3) block-based local characteristic for detecting true motion and calculating the motion intensity by using an improved method which is able to detect the inner part of moving objects precisely as well as to reduce the risk of false detection caused by intrinsic noises in the image. Depending on the detected motion activity level, it combines spatial and temporal methods with weighting factor. Simulations conducted on several video sequences indicate that the performance of the proposed method is superior to the conventional methods in terms of both subjective and objective video quality.

  • Recent prevalence of progressive scan display such as LCD TV demands the quality improvement of existing deinterlacing techniques that convert interlaced scan images including HDTV broadcasting to progressive scan images. In this paper, we proposea motion adaptive deinterlacing technique which can be used for spatial methods, temporal methods, and the spatial-temporal methods can be used for the deinterlacing techniques selectively based on the threshold values calculated by the statistics of motion in the video contents. We also propose an improved spatial deinterlacing technique that adaptively use M-ELA and DOI based on the slant of edges that are obtained by Sobel operation. The improved picture quality of the proposed algorithm is confirmed by objective and subjective quality tests on many test image sequences.

  • A single field deinterlacing method, namely interpolation algorithm derived from low resolution (ILR), is presented in this paper. Traditional deinterlacing methods usually employ edge-based interpolation technique within pixel-based estimation. However, edge-based methods are somehow sensitive to noise and intensity variation in the image. Moreover, the methods are not satisfied in deciding the exact edge direction which controls the performance of the interpolation. In order to reduce the sensitivity, the proposed algorithm investigates low-resolution characteristics of the pixel to be interpolated, and applies it to high-resolution image. Simulation results demonstrates that the proposed method gives not only a better objective performance in terms of PSNR results compare to conventional edge-based interpolation methods, but also better subjective image quality.

  • In this paper, we proposed new de-interlacing algorithm for video data using intensity gradient filter and median filter with texture detection in the image block. We first introduce the texture detection. According to texture detection, the current region is determined into smooth region or texture region. In case that the smooth region interpolated by median filter. In addition, in case of the texture region, we calculate missing pixel value using intensity gradient filter. Therefore, we analyze the local region feature using the texture detection and classify each missing pixel into two categories. And then, based on the classification result, a different de-interlacing algorithm is activated in order to obtain the best performance. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm performs well with a variety of moving sequences compared with conventional intra-field method in the literature.

  • The interpolation is used in many image processing applications such as image enhancement, de-interlacing/scan-rate conversion, wavelet transforms based on the lifting scheme, and so on. Among these, de-interlacing and scan-rate conversion are proposed for the digital TV applications. The de-interlacing algorithm can be classified into two categories. The first one uses only one field, called intra-field de-interlacing, and the other uses multiple field, called inter-field de-interlacing. In this paper, an efficient de-interlacing algorithm using spatial domain information is proposed far the interpolation of interlaced images. By efficiently estimating the directional correlations, improved interpolation accuracy has been achieved. In addition, the proposed method is simply structured and is easy to implement. Extensive simulations conducted for various images and video sequences have shown the efficacy of the proposed method with significant improvement over the previous intra-field do-interlacing methods in terms of the objective image quality as well as the subjective image quality.

  • This paper proposes a novel adaptive algorithm for deinterlacing. In the proposed algorithm, the previously developed Enhanced ELA [6], Chen [9] and Li [10] algorithms were used as a basis. The fundamental mechanism was the selection and application of the appropriate algorithm according to the correlation with the previous and next field using temporal information. Extensive simulations were conducted for video sequences and showed good performance in terms of peak signal-to-ratio (PSNR) and subjective quality.
