  • High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) is the most recent video codec standard of the ITU-T Video Coding Experts Group and the ISO/IEC Moving Picture Experts Group. The main goal of this newly introduced standard is for catering to high-resolution video in low bandwidth environments with a higher compression ratio. This paper provides a performance comparison between HEVC and H.264/AVC video compression standards in terms of objective quality, delay, and complexity in the broadcasting environment. The experimental investigation was carried out using six test sequences in the random access configuration of the HEVC test model (HM), the HEVC reference software. This was also carried out in similar configuration settings of the Joint Scalable Video Module (JSVM), the official scalable H.264/AVC reference implementation, running on a single layer mode. According to the results obtained, the HM achieves more than double the compression ratio compared to that of JSVM and delivers the same video quality at half the bitrate. Yet, the HM encodes two times slower (at most) than JSVM. Hence, it can be concluded that the application scenarios of HM and JSVM should be judiciously selected considering the availability of system resources. For instance, HM is not suitable for low delay applications, but it can be used effectively in low bandwidth environments.

  • We propose a new video compression method based on MCTF(motion compensated temporal filtering) with constant quality. SPECK is an efficient image compression coding method of encoding DWT coefficients. Especially SPECK method is very efficient for coding the motion compensated residual image which usually has larger amounts of high frequency components than the natural images. And proposed multi block size hierarchical motion estimation technique is more efficient than classical block matching algorithm with fixed block size both in estimation precision and operation costs. Proposed video method based on MCTF video compression can also support multi-frame rate decoding with reasonable complexity. Simulation results showed that proposed method outperforms H.263 video compression standard.

  • Video object segmentation is one of the core technologies for content-based real-time MPEG-4 encoding system. For real-time requirement, the segmentation algorithm should be fast and accurate but almost all existing algorithms are computationally intensive and not suitable for real-time applications. The MPEG-4 VM(Verification Model) has provided basic algorithms for MPEG-4 encoding but it has many limitations in practical software development, real-time camera input system and compression efficiency. In this paper, we implemented the preprocessing system for real-time camera input and VOP extraction for content-based video coding and also implemented motion detection to achieve the 180 : 1 compression rate for real-time and high compression MPEG-4 encoding.

  • A new digital media ear started a couple of months ago when 10 major cities in USA first boradcasted the all digital HDTV on the air. Digital video compression has been studied for decades but only recently, it becomes practical and is used in our daily life. We give an overview of the progress of video compression in recent years, particularly, the ones related to international standards. Through examples, we like to introduce this fantastic subject to the readers who were not familiar with it before.

  • We describe a practical implementation of DVR (Digital Video Recording) system. And we propose a new image compression algorithm, that input video signal is divided into two parts, a moving target and a non-moving background part to achieve efficient compression of image sequences. This algorithm reorganizes a target area and a back-ground area by use of Macro Block(MB) unit on encoding scheme. The proposed algorithm allows high quality image reconstruction at low bit rates.

  • Point Cloud which is a cluster of numerous points can express 3D object beyond the 2D plane. Each point contains 3D coordinate and color data basically, reflectance or etc. additionally. Point Cloud demand research and development much higher effective compression technology. Video-based Point Cloud Compression (V-PCC) technology in development and standardization based on the established video codec. Despite its high effective compression technology, point cloud service will be limited by terminal spec and network conditions. 2D video had the same problems. To remedy this kind of problem, 2D video is using Scalable High efficiency Video Coding (SHVC), Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) or diverse technology. This paper proposed a density scalability method using SHVC codec in V-PCC.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient coding method of digital hologram using standard compression tools for video images. At first, we convert fringe patterns into video data using a principle of CGH(Computer Generated Hologram), and then encode it. In this research, we propose a compression algorithm is made up of various method such as pre-processing for transform, local segmentation with global information of object image, frequency transform for coding, scanning to make fringe to video stream, classification of coefficients, and hybrid video coding. The proposed algorithm illustrated that it have better properties for reconstruction and compression rate than the previous methods.

  • The compression of video for both full HD and UHD requires the inclusion of extra vertical lines to every video frame, named as the DTV essential hidden area (DEHA), for the effective functioning of the MPEG-2/4/H encoder, stream, and decoder. However, while the encoding/decoding process is dependent on the DEHA, the DEHA is conventionally viewed as a redundancy in terms of channel utilization or storage efficiency. This paper proposes a block mode DEHA method to more effectively utilize the DEHA. Partitioning video block images and then evenly filling the representative DEHA macroblocks with the average DC coefficient of the active video macroblock can minimize the amount of DEHA data entering the compressed video stream. Theoretically, this process results in smaller DEHA data entering the video stream. Experimental testing of the proposed block mode DEHA method revealed a slight improvement in the quality of the active video. Outside of this technological improvement to video quality, the attractiveness of the proposed DEHA method is also heightened by the ease that it can be implemented with existing video encoders.

  • Since the resolutions of videos increase rapidly, there are continuing needs for effective video compression methods despite an increase in the transmission bandwidth. In order to satisfy such a demand, a reconstructive video coding (RVC) method by using a super resolution has been proposed. Since RVC reduces the resolution of the input video, when frames are compressed to the same size, the number of bits per pixel increases, thereby reducing coding artifacts caused by video coding. However, RVC method using super resolution is not effective in all target bitrates. Comparing the size of the loss generated while downsizing the resolution and the size of the loss caused by the video compression, only when the size of loss generated in the video compression is larger, RVC method can perform the improved compression performance compared to direct video coding. In particular, since HEVC has considerably higher compression performance than the previous standard video codec, it can be experimentally confirmed that the compression distortions become larger than the distortions of downsizing the resolution only in the very low-bitrate conditions. In this paper, we applied RVC based HEVC in various video types and measured the target bitrates that RVC method can be effectively applied.

  • This paper provides a method for compression transmission of on-chip bus data. As the data traffic on on-chip buses is rapidly increasing with enlarged video resolutions, many video processor chips suffer from a lack of bus bandwidth and their IP cores have to wait for a longer time to get a bus grant. In multimedia data such as images and video, the adjacent data signals very often have little or no difference between them. Taking advantage of this point, this paper develops a simple bus data compression method to improve the chip performance and presents its hardware implementation. The method is applied to a Video Codec - 1 (VC-1) decoder chip and reduces the processing time of one macro-block by 13.6% and 10.3% for SD and HD videos, respectively
