We present a hybrid hardware architecture capable of encoding and decoding a full HD resolution video with 60 fps. A number of technical modifications are applied to an existing image compression algorithm not only to accommodate large videos at a high frame rate but to enhance the quality of synthetic images, such as characters and video game images. Image quality of the proposed algorithm at a 1/6 compression ratio was comparable to that of the BTC based 1/3 compression algorithm.

The mobile and multimedia service on wireless network have been leaded from the improvement of telecommunication techniques. A typical multimedia service, a video transmission usually requires larger bandwidth than voice transmission. Many channel allocation algorithms for Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFBMA) to use resources more efficiently, Previous channel allocation algorithms have developed with an assumption that the data traffic is constant bit rate (CBR). However, existing algorithms are not suitable to video traffic because it usually generates a variable bit rate (VBR) traffic. In this paper, we proposed a new channel allocation algorithm called a queue-based channel allocation. it is more suitable to transmit the video traffics. Also, a problem are notified in case of realtime generated video traffic and a corresponding heuristic solution was proposed.

The use of scalable video coding scheme has been regarded as a promising solution for guaranteeing the quality of service of the video streaming over the Internet because it is a capable coding scheme to perform quality adaptation depending on network conditions. In this paper, we use a streaming model that transmits base layer using TCP and enhancement layers using DCCP, which try to provide transmission reliability of the BL and TCP friendliness. Unlike pervious works, the proposed algorithm performs rate adaptation based on playout buffer status. The PoB status of the client is sent back periodically to the server and serves as a network congestion indicator. Experimental results show that our scheme improves streaming quality comparing with pervious scheme in the case of not only constant/dynamic background flows but also VBR-encoded video sequence.

A region-based video codec based on the H.263+ standard is examined and its associated novel rate control scheme is proposed in this work. The region-based coding scheme is a hybrid method that consists of the traditional block DCT coding and the object-based coding. Basically, we adopt H.263+ as the platform, and develop a fast macroblock-based segmentation method to implement the region-based video codec. The proposed rate control solution includes rate control in three levels: encoding frame selection, frame-layer rate control and macroblock-layer rate control. The goal is to enhance the visual quality of decoded frames at low bit rates. The efficiency of proposed rate control scheme applied to the region-based video codes is demonstrated via several typical test sequences.

Authentication of videos and images based on the content is becoming an important problem in information security. Unfortunately, previous studies lack the consideration of Kerckhoffs's principle in order to achieve this (i.e., a cryptosystem should be secure even if everything about the system, except the key, is public knowledge). In this paper, a solution to the problem of finding a relationship between a frame's index and its content is proposed based on the creative utilization of a robust manifold feature. The proposed solution is based on a novel semi-fragile watermarking scheme for H.264/AVC video content authentication. At first, the input I-frame is partitioned for feature extraction and watermark embedding. This is followed by the temporal feature extraction using the Isometric Mapping algorithm. The frame index is included in the feature to produce the temporal watermark. In order to improve security, the spatial watermark will be encrypted together with the temporal watermark. Finally, the resultant watermark is embedded into the Discrete Cosine Transform coefficients in the diagonal positions. At the receiver side, after watermark extraction and decryption, temporal tampering is detected through a mismatch between the frame index extracted from the temporal watermark and the observed frame index. Next, the feature is regenerate through temporal feature regeneration, and compared with the extracted feature. It is judged through the comparison whether the extracted temporal watermark is similar to that of the original watermarked video. Additionally, for spatial authentication, the tampered areas are located via the comparison between extracted and regenerated spatial features. Experimental results show that the proposed method is sensitive to intentional malicious attacks and modifications, whereas it is robust to legitimate manipulations, such as certain level of lossy compression, channel noise, Gaussian filtering and brightness adjustment. Through a comparison between the extracted frame index and the current frame index, the temporal tempering is identified. With the proposed scheme, a solution to the Kerckhoffs's principle problem is specified.

Owing to the increase in consumption of multimedia content and the improvement of device capacity, user demand for high-quality content has increased. However, it is difficult to transport such large amounts of content over the existing broadcasting network with limited bandwidth. To provide high-definition broadcasting, some studies suggest methods of transporting multimedia over heterogeneous networks after encoding content hierarchically. MPEG Media Transport (MMT), standardized by Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG), is a solution that enables large-volume media transport over heterogeneous networks such as digital broadcasting networks and packet-switched networks. In the case of delivering a scalable encoded video over different networks, synchronization of each stream is an important issue. MMT defines a synchronization scheme, but does not contain sufficient functions to implement it. In this paper, we propose a synchronization scheme for media streams that are encoded hierarchically, divided into layers, and transported over heterogeneous networks. We implement our scheme using MMT and HTTP, and experimented using three encapsulated video streams with different durations. As a result, we show that the proposed scheme can reduce the waiting time to display high-quality video, relative to Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP-Scalable Video Coding (DASH-SVC) by requesting segments of enhanced layers after calculating the transmission time. Additionally, we find out that the selection of durations have a relation to the characteristics of the video.
We propose a video chatting algorithm using MPEG-4 over Mobile IPv6. This real-time system transmits video and character data based on UDP. To send data efficiently within limited bandwidth, we use a standard multimedia compression algorithm, MPEG-4, that encodes video data and mobile IPv6 guarantees effective mobility. This system presents the example of the mobile multimedia applications that will be the solution for the next internet services.

A programmable video decoding system with multi-core DSP and co-processors is presented. This system is adopted by Digital TV SoC (System on Chip) and is used for FHD HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) decoder. Using the DSP based programmable solution, we can reduce commercialization period by one year because we can parallelize algorithm development, software optimization and hardware design. In addition to the HEVC decoding, the proposed system can be used for other application such as other video decoding standard for multi-format decoder or video quality enhancement.
To match the requirements of heterogeneous mobile devices, video objects may be transcoded, which requires considerable CPU resources. Alternatively, multiple versions of the same video may be stored on servers, but this requires a lot of disk space. We formulate the trade-off between the versions that are stored on disk and the need for transcoding. We propose an optimal solution to this formulation based on dynamic programming. Experiments show that our scheme allows up to 68% more clients to be admitted than conventional schemes when a reasonable amount of storage is available.

In this paper, we introduced design of intelligent surveillance camera system and typical event processing scenario for urban transit. To analyze video, we studied events that frequently occur in surveillance camera system. Event processing scenario is designed for seven representative situations(designated area intrusion, object abandon, object removal in designated area, object tracking, loitering and congestion measurement) in urban transit. Our system is optimized for low hardware complexity, real time processing and scenario dependent solution.
