  • This paper proposes an experimental method for measuring the quality of experience to measure the influence of the participants' immersion, satisfaction, and presence according to the application of sensory effects to 360-degree video. Participants of the experiment watch 360-degree videos using HMD and receive sensory effects using scent diffusing devices and wind devices. Subsequently, a questionnaire was conducted on the degree of immersion, satisfaction, and present feelings for the video you watched. By analyzing the correlation of the survey results, we found that the provision of sensory effects satisfies the 360-degree video viewing, and the experimental method was appropriate. In addition, using the P.910 method, a result was derived that was not suitable for measuring the quality of the immersion and presence of 360-degree video according to the provision of sensory effects.

  • 360-degree video streaming technologies have been widely developed to provide immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences. However, high computational power and bandwidth are required to transmit and render high-quality 360-degree video through a head-mounted display (HMD). One way to overcome this problem is by transmitting high-quality viewport areas. This paper therefore proposes a motion-constrained tile set (MCTS)-based tile extractor for versatile video coding (VVC). The proposed extractor extracts high-quality viewport tiles, which are simulcasted with low-quality whole video to respond to unexpected movements by the user. The experimental results demonstrate a savings of 24.81% in the bjøntegaard delta rate (BD-rate) saving for the luma peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) compared to the rate obtained using a VVC anchor without tiled streaming.

  • This paper presents effective quality-of-service renegotiating schemes for streaming video. The conventional network supporting quality-of-service generally allows a negotiation at call setup. However, it is not efficient for the video application since the compressed video traffic is statistically non-stationary. Thus, we consider the network supporting quality-of-service renegotiations during the data transmission, and study effective quality-of-service renegotiating schemes for streaming video. Simple token bucket model, whose parameters are token filling rate and token bucket size, is adopted for the video traffic model. The renegotiating time instants and the parameters are determined by analyzing the statistical information of compressed video traffic. In this paper, two renegotiating approaches, i.e. fixed renegotiating interval case and variable renegotiating interval case, are examined. Finally, the experimental results are provided to show the performance of the proposed schemes.

  • Recently, HTTP Adaptive Streaming(HAS), a video streaming service over the HTTP based web platform has become common. The use of HAS service in mobile communication devices such as mobile phones and tablet PCs is rapidly expanding. This paper addresses ways to improve the quality of HAS service by enhancing the terms of viewer satisfaction. HAS systems have several internal operational processes, which can affect viewer satisfaction. Such processes include, the quality determination for the next video chunk, the TCP connections-setup procedure and the congestion control operation of the TCP. This paper proposes a transmission scheme to improve the HAS quality services over mobile web. The proposed scheme takes into consideration the past implicit communication state of the receiver's playback buffer occupancy. The results of these experiments indicate that the proposed scheme can improve the quality of HAS service from the mobile viewer's point of view.

  • In this paper, for analysing the major factors giving the effect to the quality of video on the multicasting service of IPTV, we construct the lab test network environment similar to the real IPTV service network environment. We measure the quality of video on the multicasting of IPTV generating and increasing the broadcasting traffic on the situation that apply the QoS technique to the test lab network and not apply the QoS technique and then find out the threshold value of factors giving the effect to the quality of video on the multicasting service of IPTV. This paper can be used in basic date for guaranteeing the constant video quality on the multicasting service of IPTV.

  • In this paper, we describe implementation of personal media gateway (PMG) for applications over BcN networks. PMG is a TV based set-top terminal, which enables transmission of Full D1 high quality video and audio at the speed of maximum 2Mbps. It supports SIP protocol and QoS for the BcN networks. The hardware of the PMG consists of host module, audio/video codec processing module, DTMF module, and remote control I/O module. H.263 and MPEG4 software are implemented in DSP as codec for hi-directional communication and streaming, respectively. G.711 and Ogg-Vorbis are implemented as audio codec. We examined the quality of video using the Video Quality Test Equpment, which was developed by KT Convergence Lab. The experimental results show the video quality of MOS 4.1 and audio quality of MOS 4.3. We expect that PMG will be prospective business models, and create new customer value.

  • Recently, many people can easily contact video telephony service through the mobile terminal owing to the commercialization of 3G communication technology. However, the quality of the serviced video telephony has been not good yet by the actual mobile restrictions. For solving quality problems, this paper presents the design of the object-based video CODEC using hybrid transform in mobile video telephony. The proposed design firstly segment each frame into a significant object and an insignificant object. The proposed design is to improve the quality of a significant object by limiting the bit rate of a insignificant object. Thus, we compress a significant object with high quality and low compression ratio and compress an insignificant object with low quality and high compression ratio. Furthermore, we control the bit rate of the video stream in the limited bandwidth by adjusting the compression ratio of each object. From experimental results, we confirmed that our method has more higher quality than methods in the conventional CODECs at the significant region on the same bit rate.

  • Since July of 2012, the 3D video extension of H.264/AVC has been under development to support the multi-view video plus depth format. In 3D video applications such as multi-view and free-view point applications, synthesized views are generated using coded texture video and coded depth video. Such synthesized views can be distorted by quantization noise and inaccuracy of 3D wrapping positions, thus it is important to improve their quality where possible. To achieve this, the relationship among the depth video, texture video, and synthesized view is investigated herein. Based on this investigation, an edge noise suppression filtering process to preserve the edges of the depth video and a method based on a total variation approach to maximum a posteriori probability estimates for reducing the quantization noise of the coded texture video. The experiment results show that the proposed methods improve the peak signal-to-noise ratio and visual quality of a synthesized view compared to a synthesized view without post processing methods.

  • In video streaming applications over the Internet, TCP-friendly rate control schemes are useful for improving network stability and inter-protocol fairness. However it does not always guarantee a smooth quality for video streaming. To simultaneously satisfy both the network and application requirements, video streaming applications should be quality-adaptive. In this paper, we propose a new quality adaptation mechanism to adjust the quality of congestion controlled video stream by controlling the frame rate. Based on the current network condition, it controls the frame rate and sending rate of video stream. Through the simulation, we prove that our adaptation mechanism appropriately adjusts the quality of video stream while improving network stability.

  • This paper proposes a new dynamic video adaptation scheme that could generate an adapted video stream customized to the requesting mobile device and current network status without repeated decode-encode cycles. In the proposed adaptation scheme, the characteristics of the video codec such as MPEG-1/-2/-4 are analyzed in advance focused on the relationships between the size and Quality of the encoded video stream, and they are stored in the proxy as a codec-dependent characteristic table. When a mobile device requests a video stream, it is dynamically decoded-encoded in the proxy with the highest quality to extract the contents-dependent attributes of the requested video stream. By comparing these attributes with codec-dependent characteristic table, the size and Quality of the requested video stream when being adapted to the target mobile device could be predicted. With this prediction, a version of adapted video stream, that meets the size constraints of mobile device while keeping the quality of encoded video stream as high as possible, could be selected without repeated decode-encode cycles. Experimental results show that the errors in our proposed scheme are less than 5% and produce an appropriate adapted video stream very quickly. It could be used t(1 build a proxy server for mobile devices that could quickly transcode the video streams widely spread in Internet which are encoded with various video codecs.
