  • Various approaches directly using vibrations of speakers have been suggested to effectively display the aural information such as the music to the hearing-impaired or the deaf. However, in these approaches, the human can't sense the frequency information over the maximum perceivable vibro-tactile frequency (around 1kHz). Therefore, in this study, an approach via spectral modulation of compressing the high frequency audio information into perceivable vibro-tactile frequency domain and outputting the modulated signals through the designated speakers is proposed. Then it is shown, through simulations of using Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) with Hanning windows and through preliminary experiments of using the vibro-tactile display testbed which is built and interfaced with a notebook PC, that the modulated signal of a natural sound composing sounds of a frog, a bird, and a water stream could produce the noise-free signal suitable enough for vibro-tactile speakers without causing Significant interfering disturbances, Lastly, for three different combinations of information provided to the subject, that is, i) with only video image, ii) with video image along with the modulated vibro-tactile stimuli as proposed in this study to the forearm of the subject, and iii) with video image along with full audio information, the effects to the human sense of reality and his emotion to given audio-video clips including various sounds and images are investigated and compared. It is shown from results of those experiments that the proposed method of providing modulated vibro-tactile stimuli along with the video images to the human has very high feasibility to transmit pseudo-aural sense to the human.

  • If a virtual object in a virtual environment represented by a stereo vision system could be touched by a user with some tactile feeling on his/her fingertip, the sense of reality would be heightened. To create a visual impression as if the user were directly pointing to a desired point on a virtual object with his/her own finger, we need to align virtual space coordinates and physical space coordinates. Also, if there is no tactile feeling when the user touches a virtual object, the virtual object would seem to be a ghost. Therefore, a haptic interface device is required to give some tactile sensation to the user. We have constructed such a human-computer interaction system in the form of a simple virtual reality game using a stereo vision system, a vibro-tactile device module, and two position/orientation sensors.

  • As one of applications in augmented realities, this paper presents a bubble popping system utilizing a haptic vibro-tactile mouse. In this system, virtual bubbles randomly float in the 3D space. By using the vibro-tactile mouse grabbed by a user, the bubbles are popped when they are touched by the mouse in the 3D space. Then a bubble popping effect with addition mouse vibration is delivered to the user's hand through the mouse. The proposed system is developed on ARToolkit environment. Therefore, basic components such as a camera and a marker pattern are required. The systems is composed of a vibro-haptic mouse, a webcam, a marker pattern, a graphic bubble object, and graphic mouse. Mouse vibration as well as bubble fade-out effect is delivered. Therefore, the combination of visual and tactile bubble popping effects outperforms the usage of a single effect in the experience of augmented reality.

  • In this study, the vibration-based tactile actuator for smart wear applications is presented by using piezoelectric ceramic transducers. The compact wireless actuation system is constructed with a high voltage piezoelectric amplifier, a microcontroller, wireless communication module, and rechargeable lithium-polymer battery. For the wireless communication between a hardware and an operator, the bluetooth-based wireless communication system is prepared and the user interface is provided via smart phone applications. From a series of experimental user studies, it is demonstrated that the proposed vibro-tactile actuator based on piezoelectric ceramic transducers can be effectively applied to smart wear applications.

  • As haptic devices become increasingly important in various product fields, it becomes essential to design effective vibration patterns for better tactile sensitivities. Despite this trend, standardization in the design of vibration patterns has not been well established, which causes developers to neglect the effects of haptics while programming or developing products. To provide better tactile sensitivity, the present study introduces a vibration pattern design system and proposes guidelines for designing vibration patterns. This system consists of two modules: (1) a graphical pattern design and evaluation program and (2) a vibro-tactile display device for prototyping the designed vibration patterns.

  • In this study, the effect of the automotive haptic-seat technology which can transmit the driving information by the vibro-stimulus from the seat was investigated to overcome previous system's limitation relied on the visual and audial method and to help handicap driving. A prototype haptic seat covers with 30 coin-type motors and driver module were developed for this sake. A driving simulator on the 6-DOF motion-base was used for driving situation and we executed the seat vibro-stimulus test with 10 young participants who have normal tactile sense. The haptic recognition ratio by 30 locations was measured and analyzed in the result. The intensity of vibro-stimulus was adjusted by input voltage of motors (1.5V,2.5V,3.5V). All vibro-stimulus locations at 2.5V and 3.5V could be recognized by all participants and even in the lowest recognition ratio of 1.5V. The results showed that the seat vibration stimulus could be useful to transfer the drivers' information while driving.

  • Recently, various researches have been attempted to effectively display pseudo-aural senses to the hearing-impaired or the deaf, using vibro-tactile stimulus as well as visual sense. Particularly, it is reported that as complementary senses to support the visual sense, tactile senses displayed by either speakers or vibration motors improve the reality sense significantly but do not nearly improve the emotional sense. Thus, in this study, the thermal sense is selected as another complementary sense to support the pseudo-aural sense display and it is investigated whether the thermal sense could generate a pseudo-aural sense or not. For this purpose, a thermal display module which could effectively display the desired thermal sense is implemented. Then, experiments have been conducted to subjects, which provide them with various types of stimuli combined with the aural, the vibrotactile, and the thermal stimuli along with the visual information. It can be confirmed, through statistical analysis on the data collected from experiments, that subjects could feel a pseudo-thermal sense closer to the real thermal sense which the normal subject feel from both the visual and the aural information, particularly either i) with the thermal stimulus along with the visual information or ii) with both the thermal and the vibrotactile stimuli along with the visual information than only with the visual information. Conclusively, it can be confirmed that the thermal stimulus applied to the skin of the subjects could play a role of effectively displaying pseudo-aural sense related to the thermal sense, as an complementary media for the pseudo-aural display.

  • This study was performed with 5 subjects and used three kinds of music and vibroacoustic stimuli wave based upon each kinds of music. Executing music stimulation, vibro tactile and acoustic wave stimulation to human body were performed. Then measured brain waves were analyzed under each condition including before stimulation, stimulation 1, and stimulation 2. Effects by stimulation results could be studied with experiments and summarized results are followings. 1. It may be concluded that effects on brain waves by music and vibroacoustic stimulation might differ under different situations such as stimulation types with vibroacoustic equipment, human body and mental conditions when measuring, etc.. 2. During stimuli by using music A, B, and C, the effect of $\alpha$ wave, $\beta$ wave, and SMR wave power values show same tendency to the subject c but music C had very different tendency during vibroacoustic stimuli. 3. During vibroacoustic stimuli by applying the signals of music C, because SMR wave power value was continually increased with consistency comparing to Bst, this can be estimated that an application of inducing mind concentration condition would be possible under relaxed body and mind conditions. 4. To secure data significance, all measured data need to be tested statistically whether data would be interrelated or not.
