  • PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of a whole body vibration-exercise program on the muscle strength, balance, and falling efficacy of super-aged women. METHODS: Thirty participants, who are over 75 years of age, were recruited. They were assigned randomly to an experimental group (n=15), which received whole body vibration exercise, and a control group (n=15), which received an exercise program that did not include vibration. The interventions lasted for four weeks, three times a day, and 25 minutes per session. To compare the effects of the intervention, a 30-second chair stand test (CST), Korean version of Berg balance scale (K-BBS), functional reach test (FRT), timed up and go test (TUG), and Korean version of the falls efficacy scale (K-FES) was used. RESULTS: The experimental group showed a significant increase (p.<05) before and after the intervention in the chair stand test (CST), Korean version of the Berg balance scale (K-BBS), functional reach test (FRT), timed up-and-go (TUG), and Korean version of the fall efficacy scale (K-FES). Compared to the control group, the experiment group showed a more significant increase (p.<05) in the CST, K-BBS, and FRT. CONCLUSION: A whole body vibration exercise program could be suggested as an effective intervention method for muscle and balance strengthening for super-aged women.

  • This paper introduces the results of acoustic loads test conducted on the upper stage assembly of KSLV-I, which is the first Korea space launch vehicle. A launch vehicle and its payloads are subjected to severe acoustic pressure loading when they lift off and ascent during the transonic periods. Acoustic loadings are spreaded out broad frequncy-spectrum up to 10,000Hz. Acoustic loads are a primary source of structural random vibration of the upper stage and payloads. Therefore, in order to verify the structural integrity of the upper stage assembly of KSLV-I and the survivability of its components under severe random vibration environment, acoustic loads test is conducted in the high intensity acoustic chamber with 142dB (overall SPL). The results show the structural design and component random vibration specifications well meet with the environmental requirements.

  • A model test is carried out to investigate flow-induced vibration of a Tainter gate in estuary sulices. The gate model scaled with the ratio of 1:25 is made of acryl panel dimensioned 0.66m in width, 0.5m in height in the concrete test flume. Firstly, natural frequencies of the model gate are measured and the results are compared with the numerical results in order to verify the model. The amplitudes of the vibration are measured under the different gate opening and water level conditions in flow from the gate outside to the gate inside. Also 5 revised gate models with bottom width increased 0.5 cm each are tested under the different gate opening and water level. The results are analyzed to study the characteristics of the gate vibration. These test results are assessed in comparison with formerly test results, as a result, presents a design method of Tainter gate to reduce the gate vibration and a basic data for the guide manuals of gate management.

  • During the acceptance test of KTX, unexpectedly great lateral vibration in 14th~16th train at 150km/h~200km/h was appeared on a straight line in the winter season. Generally, stiffness of secondary suspension in KTX vehicle is one of the most sensitive components on air temperature. So, we examined that the secondary suspension to be mounted heating system was able to reduce the lateral vibration in the tail car of KTX. Also, we verified that lateral vibration from test results on KTX train with wheel conicity 1/20 disappeared. In this paper, we analysis effective reduction methods and the cause of the lateral vibration using model of KTX train and compare with the test results. The analysis results agree well with test ones. From mode analysis result, lateral vibration is occurred at natural frequency range 0.5~0.6Hz with a negative damping value and its natural frequency disappear gradually according to increasing of wheel concinicy.

  • Floor vibrations in residence and office buildings are typically induced by heel drop and walking movement of occupants. The criteria of most vibration provisions have been developed based on the vibration caused by heel drop impact rather than walking. There may be considerable differences between the vibration characteristics induced by walking and heel drop. The effect of walking vibration was not well reflected on current provisions. In this paper, shaking table test was performed to investigate the human perception level against the vibrations due to walking and heel drop. This study attempts to compare the human Perception level of two different vibration sources. Also, this study investigates the effect of damping on a Perception level under heel drop and walking vibration.

  • Development of the linear motors is recently required to control a high-speed and high-resolution in the high-integrated and speed process industry. This paper presents vibration analyses as well as measurement standards of the newly developed linear motors through analyzing the vibration characteristics of the advanced products. Vibration experiments are conducted for identifying vibration level during operation. They are also included in the modal test to analyze dynamic characteristics. Analytic data using Finite Element Method (FEM) are compared with the results of the modal. The FEM and experiments make it possible to understand these characteristics. Further, through computer simulation for the behavior of moving part to be vibration source, the best acceleration pattern of moving part movement can be verified to achieve effective moving part positioning and reduce the vibration due to moving part movement.

  • Vibration-resistant rubbers, whose elastic and shear behaviors are similar to viscoelastic materials, are used to make bracing dampers to reduce the building vibration. Experimental study is carried out to find the vibration characteristics of the dampers installed in the building model. The natural frequencies and modal damping ratios are obtained from the free vibration test and Fourier analysis. Shaking table test is performed to find the response behavior of the building model under earthquake loading. The present experimental study shows that the bracing dampers have the behavior of viscoelastic dampers, which increase the modal damping ratios and viscoelastic characteristics.

  • Although studies evaluating the effects of the blasting vibration on the adjacent structures from various angles have continued, cases of securing the safety of the adjacent buildings and researching the proper blasting method for the field condition by analyzing the vibration waveform of the measuring field while performing the open pit blasting are poor. Therefore, it is necessary to present a remedy for blasting pattern selection through test blasting that is appropriate for field conditions, and is economical and efficient. In this study, open pit blasting work was conducted based on the separation distance applied according to the standard blasting method by test blasting and the vibration regulation standard in the road expansion construction site to measure the blasting vibration value, and the vibration prediction equation by blasting methods was examined using a regression analysis computer program to calculate K, N, and R of the confidence level 95%. By setting the blasting allowed vibration standard of the test blasting target area to 0.3cm/sec, and the charring weight and blasting method by the separation distances according to the blasting vibration estimation equation of the open pit blasting guideline and the blasting vibration estimation equation of the test blasting were compared/analyzed, it was possible to identify the factors that increased the working expenses. In addition, the measurement and analysis of the adjacent structures during open pit blasting and the blasting vibration were performed after selecting the most adjacent structure to the open pit blasting spot to analyze the problems on the test blasting procedure and analysis method in the open pit blasting design/construction guidelines, which appeared in the process of completing open pit blasting construction, and a remedy is presented.

  • Vibrating test of vehicle component can be possible in lab-based simulators instead of field testing owing to the development of technology in control algorithm as well as computational process. Currently, Multi-Axial Simulation Table(MAST) is recommended as a vibrating equipment, which excites a target component for 3-directional translation and rotation motion simultaneously and hence, vibrational condition can be fully approximated to that of real road test. But, the vibration-free performance of target component is not guaranteed with MAST system, which is only simulator subjective to the operator. Rather, the reliability of multi-axial vibration test is dependent on the quality of input profile which should cover the required severity of vibrating condition on target component. In this paper, multi-axial vibration testing methodology of vehicle component is presented here, from data acquisition of vehicle accelerations to the obtaining the input profile of MAST using severe data at proving ground. To compare the severity of vibration condition, between real road test and proving ground one, energy principle of equivalent damage is proposed to calculate energy matrices of acceleration data and then, it is determined the optimal combination of special events on proving ground which is equivalent to real road test at the aspects of vibration fatigue using sequential searching optimal algorithm. To explain the vibration methodology clearly, seat and door component of vehicle are selected as a example.
