In this present study, in order to update the finite element model considering the boundary conditions, a method has been proposed. The conventional finite element model updating method, updates the finite element model by using the dynamic characteristics (natural frequency, mode shape) which can be estimated from the ambient vibration test. Therefore, prediction of the static response of an actual structure is difficult. Furthermore, accurate estimation of the physical properties is relatively hard. A novel method has been proposed to overcome the limitations of conventional method. Initially, the proposed method estimates the rotational spring constant of a finite element model using the deflection of structure and the rotational displacement of support measurements. The final updated finite element model is constructed by estimating the material properties of the structure using the finite element model with updated rotational spring constant and the dynamic characteristics of the structure. The proposed finite element model updating method is validated through numerical simulation and compared with the conventional finite element model updating method.

A spacer grid assembly is one of the most important structural components of the nuclear fuel assembly of a pressurized water reactor (PWR), and it affects the performance of the fuel assembly. The primary design requirement is that the mechanical integrity of the fuel rod should be maintained by the spacer grid assembly during the operation of the reactor. It was known that fretting damage to the fuel rod can be reduced by adjusting the relative moving displacement between the fuel rod and its support. In this study, we used the finite element method to evaluate the characteristics of a sliding support designed to reduce fretting damage of fuel rods.

The inelastic response of many structural steel and reinforced concrete structures subject to extreme loadings can be characterized by elastoplastic behaviors. Although excursion beyond the elastic range is usually not permitted under normal conditions of service, the extent of permanent damage a structure may sustain when subjected to extreme conditions, such as severe blast or earthquake loading, is frequently of interest to the engineer. A blast is usually the result of an explosion defined as a "sudden expansion". This paper discusses the basic concept that defines blast loadings on structures and corresponding elastoplastic structural response (displacement, velocity, and acceleration) and try to explain a crack propagation of concrete in sudden expansion. According to nonlinear finite element analysis, the crack forms of static and dynamic states displayed different in RC structural members. This paper also provides useful data for the dynamic fracture analysis of RC frame structures.
In this investigation, dynamic and bending behaviors of isolated protein microtubules are analyzed. Microtubules (MTs) can be considered as bio-composite structures that are elements of the cytoskeleton in eukaryotic cells and posses considerable roles in cellular activities. They have higher mechanical characteristics such as superior flexibility and stiffness. In the modeling purpose of microtubules according to a hollow beam element, a novel single variable sinusoidal beam model is proposed with the conjunction of modified strain gradient theory. The advantage of this model is found in its new displacement field involving only one unknown as the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, which is even less than the Timoshenko beam theory. The equations of motion are constructed by considering Hamilton's principle. The obtained results are validated by comparing them with those given based on higher shear deformation beam theory containing a higher number of variables. A parametric investigation is established to examine the impacts of shear deformation, length scale coefficient, aspect ratio and shear modulus ratio on dynamic and bending behaviors of microtubules. It is remarked that when length scale coefficients are almost identical of the outer diameter of MTs, microstructure-dependent behavior becomes more important.
A microstructure-dependent dynamic model for silicon nanobeams with axial motion is developed by considering the effects of nonlocal elasticity and surface energy. The nanobeam is considered to subject to both transverse and longitudinal loads arising from nanostructural surface effect and all positive directions of physical quantities are defined clearly prior to modeling so as to clarify the confusions of sign in governing equations of previous work. The nonlocal and surface effects are taken into consideration in the dynamic behaviors of silicon nanobeams with axial motion including circular natural frequency, vibration mode, transverse displacement and critical speed. Various supporting conditions are presented to investigate the circular frequencies by a numerical method and the effects of many variables such as nonlocal nanoscale, axial velocity and external loads on non-dimensional circular frequencies are addressed. It is found that both nonlocal and surface effects play remarkable roles on the dynamics of nanobeams with axial motion and cause the frequencies and critical speed to decrease compared with the classical continuum results. The comparisons of the non-dimensional calculation values by present and previous studies validate the correctness of the present work. Additionally, numerical examples for silicon nanobeams with axial motion are addressed to show the nonlocal and surface effects on circular frequencies intuitively. Results obtained in this paper are helpful for the design and optimization of nanobeam-like microstructures based sensors and oscillators at nanoscale with desired dynamic mechanical properties.

Recently, a deep mixture method as a soil improvement method of marine soft ground, which causes less noise and vibration than other methods, are widely used. In this study, for DCM(Deep Cement Mixing) method, one of the deep mixture method, optimum mixing ratio of clay-cement was suggested using uniaxial compression tests on specimens with various mixing ratio of claycement. In addition, the stability of a caisson on tangent circle-type and wall-type DCM treated ground was evaluated using centrifuge tests. As a result, optimum mixing ratio of clay-cement was 28.5% and the stability of the caisson on DCM treated ground was confirmed. However, the lateral displacement of the caisson on the wall-type DCM treated ground was 7% less and the settlement of that was 39% less than the case of the tangent-circle-type DCM method.

In the precedent study, the retractable-roof spatial structure was selected as the analytical model and a tuned mass damper (TMD) was installed to control the dynamic response for the earthquake loads. Also, it is analyzed that the installation location of TMD in the analytical model and the optimal number of installations. A single TMD mass installed in the analytical model was set up 1% of the mass of the whole structure, and the optimum installation location was derived according to the number of change. As a result, it was verified that most effective to install eight TMDs regardless of opening or closing. Thus, in this study, eight TMDs were installed in the retractable-roof spatial structure and the optimum mass ratio was inquired while reducing a single TMD. In addition, the optimum mass distribution ratio was identified by redistributing the TMD masses differently depending on the installation position, using the mass ratio of vibration control being the most effective for seismic load. From the analysis results, as it is possible to confirm the optimum mass distribution ratio according to the optimum mass ratio and installation location of the TMD in the the retractable-roof spatial structure, it can be used as a reference in the TMD design for large space structure.
In this work, the dynamic response of functionally graded beams on variable elastic foundations is studied using a novel higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT). Unlike the conventional HSDT, the present one has a new displacement field which introduces undetermined integral variables. The FG beams were assumed to be supported on Winkler-Pasternak type foundations in which the Winkler modulus is supposed to be variable in the length of the beam. The variable rigidity of the elastic foundation is assumed to be linear, parabolic and sinusoidal along the length of the beam. The material properties of the FG porous beam vary according to a power law distribution in terms of the volume fraction of the constituents. The equations of motion are determined using the virtual working principle. For the analytical solution, Navier method is used to solve the governing equations for simply supported porous FG beams. Numerical results of the present theory for the free vibration of FG beams resting on elastic foundations are presented and compared to existing solutions in the literature. A parametric study will be detailed to investigate the effects of several parameters such as gradient index, thickness ratio, porosity factor and foundation parameters on the frequency response of porous FG beams.
The analysis of nonlinear vibrations, buckling, post-buckling, flutter boundary determination and post-flutter behavior of a homogeneous curved plate assuming cylindrical bending is conducted in this article. Other assumptions include simply-supported boundary conditions, supersonic aerodynamic flow at the top of the plate, constant pressure conditions below the plate, non-viscous flow model (using first- and third-order piston theory), nonlinear structural model with large deformations, and application of mechanical and thermal loads on the curved plate. The analysis is performed with constant environmental indicators (flow density, heat, Reynolds number and Mach number). The material properties (i.e., coefficient of thermal expansion and modulus of elasticity) are temperature-dependent. The equations are derived using the principle of virtual displacement. Furthermore, based on the definitions of virtual work, the potential and kinetic energy of the final relations in the integral form, and the governing nonlinear differential equations are obtained after fractional integration. This problem is solved using two approaches. The frequency analysis and flutter are studied in the first approach by transferring the handle of ordinary differential equations to the state space, calculating the system Jacobin matrix and analyzing the eigenvalue to determine the instability conditions. The second approach discusses the nonlinear frequency analysis and nonlinear flutter using the semi-analytical solution of governing differential equations based on the weighted residual method. The partial differential equations are converted to ordinary differential equations, after which they are solved based on the Runge-Kutta fourth- and fifth-order methods. The comparison between the results of frequency and flutter analysis of curved plate is linearly and nonlinearly performed for the first time. The results show that the plate curvature has a profound impact on the instability boundary of the plate under supersonic aerodynamic loading. The flutter boundary decreases with growing thermal load and increases with growing curvature.
In this work, the bending and dynamic behaviors of advanced composite plates resting on variable visco-Pasternak foundations are studied using a simple shear deformation integral plate model. The research is carried out with a view to a three-parameter foundation including the influences of the variable Winkler coefficient, the constant Pasternak coefficient and the damping coefficient of the elastic medium. The present theory uses a displacement field with integral terms instead of derivative terms by including also the shear deformation effect without introducing the shear correction factors. The equations of motion for advanced composite plates are obtained using the Hamilton principle. Analytical solutions for the bending and dynamic analysis are deduced for simply supported plates resting on variable visco-Pasternak foundations. Some numerical results are presented to demonstrate the impact of material index, elastic foundation type, and damping coefficient of the foundation, on the bending and dynamic responses of advanced composite plates.
