In this article, a novel structural modal parameters identification methodology is developed to determine the natural frequencies and damping ratios of civil structures based on the symplectic geometry mode decomposition (SGMD) approach. The SGMD approach is a new decomposition algorithm that can decompose the complex response signals with better decomposition performance and robustness. The novel method firstly decomposes the measured structural vibration response signals into individual mode components using the SGMD approach. The natural excitation technique (NExT) method is then used to obtain the free vibration response of each individual mode component. Finally, modal natural frequencies and damping ratios are identified using the direct interpolating (DI) method and a curve fitting function. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated based on numerical simulation and field measurement. The structural modal parameters are identified utilizing the simulated non-stationary responses of a frame structure and the field measured non-stationary responses of a supertall building during a typhoon. The results demonstrate that the developed method can identify the natural frequencies and damping ratios of civil structures efficiently and accurately.
Transient acoustic pressure in the near field of an impacted plate carries information that can be utilized for recovering the impact force history. The inverse calculation approach using BEM-based NAH, which is conventionally used for time harmonic excitation, can be applied for reconstructing the transient waves using the principle of Fourier transform and spectral analysis. Then, using the recovered velocity in normal direction of the plate surface, the corresponding structural intensity can be obtained and the identification of input power can be performed. However, several manipulations should be given to overcome numerical artifacts, such as aliasing and erratic oscillation at discontinuity, and to suppress the effect of noise. Experiment using a simply supported plate is presented for demonstration purpose.

This paper presents the design and experimental evaluation of fast output sampling feedback controller to minimize structural vibration of a cantilever beam using Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) wires as control actuators and piezoceramics as sensor and disturbance actuator. Linear dynamic models of the smart cantilever beam are obtained using online recursive least square parameter estimation. A digital control system that consists of $Simulink^{TM}$ modeling software and dSPACE DS1104 controller board is used for identification and control. The effectiveness of the controller is shown through simulation and experimentation by exciting the structure at resonance.
This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation on a vibration-based damage identification framework for a steel girder type and a truss bridge based on acceleration responses to operational loading. The method relies on sensor clustering-based time-series analysis of the operational acceleration response of the bridge to the passage of a moving vehicle. The results are presented in terms of Damage Features from each sensor, which are obtained by comparing the actual acceleration response from the sensors to the predicted response from the time-series model. The damage in the bridge is detected by observing the change in damage features of the bridge as structural changes occur in the bridge. The relative severity of the damage can also be quantitatively assessed by observing the magnitude of the changes in the damage features. The experimental results show the potential usefulness of the proposed method for future applications on condition assessment of real-life bridge infrastructures.
Locations and emission characteristics of noise source of rapier loom are important factors greatly. So, noise characteristics of rapier loom were investigated by the noise source identification as a part of experimental methods in this study. To identify the noise sources of the rapier loom sound intensity was measured under machine operation. In addition, frequency spectra of the sound at operator position was measured along with sound intensity to help identify the noise characteristics of the rapier loom. The results indicate that the sound power level occurs along the rapier loom.
The nonlinear characteristics for hinge of a deployable missile control fin are investigated experimentally. The nonlinearity is caused by a worn or loose hinge and manufacturing tolerance and cannot be eliminated completely. The structural nonlinearity has an effect on the static and dynamic characteristics of the control fin. Therefore, it is necessary to establish the accurate nonlinear model for the hinge of the control fin. In the present study the existence of nonlinearities in the hinge is confirmed from the frequency response experiments such as tip random excitation and base sine sweep. Using the system identification method. especially, ″Force-state Mapping Technique″, the types of nonlinearities are identified and the nonlinear hinge model of the control fin is established.
This paper presents an NVH test of Automotive power steering system performed at a half-car Test-rig. The test was done for neutral and full turn(or relief) conditions in steering wheel at a fixed rpm first, then followed by the same conditions for the rpm run-up. The sound intensity measurement verified the results from the frequency and order analysis, especially about the identification of major noise sources and their dominant frequencies. The results from thie study can be utilized in the system noise tuning when a new steering component is installed. In particular, the noise and vibration reduction at the relief condition will be accomplished through the knowledge obtained from this study and from the on-going research on the hose tuning techniques usign silencers and tuning cable inserted in the pressure hose.
Damage detection based on measured vibration data has received intensive studies recently. Frequently, the damage to a structure may be reflected by a change of some system parameters, such as a degradation of the stiffness. In this paper, we apply a method to nondestructively locate and estimate the severity of damage in corrosion pipeline for which a few natural frequencies or mode shapes are available. The method is based on the strain modal sensitivity ratio (SMSR) and the orthogonality conditions sensitivities (OCS) applied to vibration features identified during the monitoring of the pipeline. The advantage of these methods is that it only requires measuring few modal parameters. The SMSR-based and OCS-based damage detection methods are illustrated using computer-simulated and laboratory testing data. The results show that the current method provides a precise indication of both the location and the extent of corrosion pipeline.
