In this paper, we proposed the bidirectional mono-thermic test for the functional exploration of the vestibules by considering a temeprature variation in the semicirular canals constant for a short time and an inclination of the semicircular canal plan relative to the vertical. Through the proposed test we showed the evidence of an eventual asymmetry between the responses of right and left vestibules. In view of clinical practice, the proposed test has the advantages of saving the test time, of using only one temperature for the ear irrigation and of making only head movements to the given angle for the stimulation.

Statement of problem. Anatomic landmarks have been used in the orientation of occlusal plane and the determination of vertical dimension for edentulous patients. Such as labial vestibules of anterior region and hamular notches, retromolar pads of posterior region are very useful anatomic landmarks for fabrication of occlusion rim because they are to be identified on master casts. Therefore, if average distances between landmarks of maxillae and mandible in dentate subjects are measured and applied, not only occlusal plane but also vertical dimension can be established initially. Purpose. The purpose of this study is to measure vertical distances between anatomic landmarks and to present a guide to the orientation of occlusal plane and the determination of vertical dimension of edentulous patients. Material and method. Upper and lower border-molded casts were made in 93 Korean dentulous subjects, mean age 25 years. Incisal edges of central incisors, bottoms of labial vestibules, hamular notches and the half level of retromolar pads were marked on casts. Measurements of vertical distances from incisal edge of central incisor to the bottom of labial vestibule, between upper and lower bottoms of labial vestibules, from hamular notch to retromolar pad and from hamular notch to the occlusal plane established by the incisal edge of maxillary central incisor and mesiopalatal cusps of both maxillary first molars were made on each cast. Results and conclusion. 1. The mean distance from the incisal edge of central incisor to the bottom of labial vestibule was 20.8mm(SD 1.7) on upper casts and 17.3mm(SD 1.4) on lower casts. 2. The mean distance between both bottoms of labial vestibules of upper and lower casts was 35.0mm(SD 2.7). 3 The mean distance from hamular notch to the half level of retromolar pad was 5.0mm(SD 1.3). 4. The mean distance from hamular notch to occlusal plane was 7.9mm(SD 1.5). 5. Distances from incisal edge of central incisor to labial vestibule on lower casts(P<0.01) and from hamular notch to retromolar pad(P<0.0001) were greater in male than in female.
The objectives of this study are to clarify the impacts of stack effect in high-rise residential buildings and to present technical methods to reduce stack effect. For the evaluation of stack effect, architectural design guidelines were used and computer program simulations based on network model were performed. The evaluation shows that problems due to stack effect may be reduced by appropriate architectural designs, such as increase in air-tightness of building envelop, and provision of vestibules around entrance and elevator hall doors.
The pressurized smoke control system is important for fire safety in building because it is directly concerned with egress time of people. Even though the damper plays an essential role in the pressurized smoke control system, the phenomena of backflow smoke occurs for a certain the damper position. The research for a position of damper effects on distribution of air flow at the fire door is not performed. In this study, numerical simulation using FDS 5.5 was carried out to analyze the effect of the position of damper on flow distribution at the fire door. To simulate real situation, effects of opening and closing of fire door was considered. As a result, when HRR was between 200 kW and 400 kW, in the case which the damper was on the opposite wall of the fire door, the back flow to the vestibules was large compared to the two other cases of damper position. But when HRR was above 400 kW, Effect on damper position was not occurred.
The smoke control systems using pressure differentials are already well known as the most reliable method to prevent the smoke infiltration into the emergency stairs or safe spaces. However, it is true that many problems are domestically pointed out due to the insufficient understanding and technology on the smoke control systems using pressure differentials. In this regard, this work analyzed the effect of major factors for smoke control system using pressure differentials such as a duct area, opening area of air supply damper, improvement on open vestibules, stack effect and location of air supply. In conclusion, adequate pressure differentials can not be maintained in small duct because the smaller duct area have the large friction loss. Especially, It is confirmed that the major factor for deterioration of smoke control system performance is stack effect that makes pressure differentials smaller in the lower floors.

The objective of this study is to analyze and evaluate the impact of the stack effect in high-rise buildings for solving the various problems resulting from it. For the evaluation of the impacts on the stack effect, computer program simulations based on the network model were performed for a typical high-rise office building. The results of the simulations show that the impact caused by the stack effect is mainly dependent on building envelope air-tightness and internal air flow resistance. Therefore the problems due to the stack effect may be solved to some extent by installing vestibules around entrance doors and doors serving elevators, and by zoning the elevators.

The purpose of this study is to suggest optimum size of residents' bedrooms in nursing homes. Bedroom is an essential part of nursing homes because nursing home residents spend most of their times in bedrooms and occupy the largest part of facility area. Therefore it is necessary to set an adequate standard related to resident room area in nursing facilities, which have a great effect on planning longterm care facilities for the elderly. The body dimensions of elderly people and care givers have been collected from the previous study. Based on the body dimensions data, the behaviors of elderly as well as care givers have been analysed. The minimum areas-exclusive of toilets, closets, vestibules and so on - have been proposed from the results of the behavior analysis.

The objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of topical 5% EMLA cream versus 20% Benzocaine gel in reducing pain from intra oral needle insertion alone as well as injection of anesthetic. The 2 topical anesthetics were tested against each other bilaterally using a randomized, controlled, single blinded, split mouth design. Phase I was conducted to find out the rapidity of onset action of the two agents on anterior/posterior vestibules and anterior/posterior palatal mucosa. Phase II was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of the two topical anaesthetic agents in reducing the pain of intraoral injections. The agents were left in anterior/posterior vestibules and anterior/posterior palatal mucosa for the amount of time recorded in phase I. Subjects recorded pain on a 100-mm modified visual analog scale(VAS). A pulse oximeter was used to recorded the preoperative and postoperative pulse rates. In phase I of the study, two topical agents showed the longer onset of action at anterior part and vestibules than posterior part and palatal mucosa. EMLA cream showed the rapidest onset of action compared to benzocaine gel except on anterior palatal mucosa. In phase II of the study, the VAS grading of the pain for anesthetic administration showed EMLA cream was significantly(P<.05) better in elimination or reducing the pain on the anterior/posterior palatal mucosa. In conclusion, EMLA cream showed the rapidest onset of action compared to benzocaine gel except on anterior palatal mucosa. EMLA cream was found to be superior to Benzocaine gel with regards to pain reduction for anesthetic administration especially on anterior and posterior palatal mucosa.
A high-rise residential building experienced stack effect problems during the winter such as difficulties in opening residential entrance doors and whistling noise from elevator doors generated by airflow. Field measurements were carried out on the building and the problems were verified by the analysis of the measurement results from three points of view: the total stack pressure difference, pressure distribution on each floor, and the location of the neutral pressure level. Based on the analysis of the three key parameters, possible solutions were proposed, such as zoning vertical shafts, lessening the airflow from the entrance doors on basement floors and lobby floor by installing vestibules, improving the airtightness of exterior walls, and installing separation doors where the problems occur. Simulations of proposed solutions were conducted and the effects of reducing the pressure difference were evaluated. Stack effect problems in a high-rise residential building were verified through field measurements and could be mitigated by the solutions which were drawn from the analysis of the field measurements and the simulation results.
